Hi Dan, a lot of shops are selling videoke machines that's why microphones are ready for people who want to sing to test the machines. And yes, there's an abundance of good singers so people don't seem to mind it. It's ordinary, we see these things everywhere almost everyday. The girl in the gym singing was imitating several of the more famous singers in the Philippines. To do this takes a lot of talent especially because the ranges for each singer were so different. I think that the last one she did might have been of Morissette, because of the power and the high notes. I would love to hear her sing on her own. From below her name is Jennie Gabriel. Filipinos love to sing with the karaoke or we call it videoke. So u can find videokes in almost any places here in the Philippines. Especially in shopping malls where videoke machines are part of their selling products. Customers can try these machines on the spot, the main reason u can hear and see customers singing with a microphone on shopping malls. The main reason why Filipinos are very talented in the art of singing.

By the way, to answer the question why there are microphone in a mall or store, thats because the store is on home entertainment section were they sells all type entertainment showcase. One of the entertainment device their selling Magic Microphone were it has severals minus 1 songs records you can choose. You only need a TV, connect the Mic device thru a receiver, and you have an instant Karaoke.

Here in the Philippines .. we all sing..we all love karaoke.. but not all have a great voice though. You may see them not minding someone singing in the karaoke... it is because Pinoys are used to it.
