HaPe's masterpiece was to hire a stretch limo, disguise himself als Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and drive up to Bellevue Palace, just minutes before the real Queen Beatrix was due to arrive there for the state banquet given in her honour. The guy has balls. The character of Horst Schlämmer is relatively tame, a purposefully creepy elderly local journalist from the Rhineland.

Horst Schlämmer even created (or at least popularized) a figure of speech. He often said "Ich hab Rücken", literally "I've got back", as an abbreviation of "I've got back pain" or "I've got trouble with my back".
@godblesstheinternet14 күн бұрын
Horst Schlemmer was at one point so popular in Germany, that the people spoke of him as if he was an actual person. Nobody referred to him as "Hape Kerkeling as Horst Schlemmer". It's sad, that a lot gets lost in translation. The subtitles were most of the time ok, but the way he speaks and sometimes pronounces words, almost swallows them... that is priceless.

I am not a native German language speaker, but pretty close to near-native. I've been living in Germany for 45 years, and I actually currently live in Rheinkreis Neuss, the district where the Neuss-Grevenbroicher Zeitung is published. Even though I only started learning German when I was 15 years old back in 1971 in Niedersachsen, I recognise all the nuances in Hape Kerkeling's Horst Schlämmer skits. The stereotype architecture, the pale brick housefronts on the main road before the bypasses were built, the 1970s' mud-green colour of the fitted units, the whole VW Golf-ethos and the electric garage door, etc. etc. Horst Schlämmer is the kind of person I cringed at back in the early 1970s. And Hape does him so well.

I always loved to see Horst Schlämmer, because he evokes some interesting feelings. I feel extremely uncomfortable watching him (especially as a woman), but at the same time he's also very funny for several reasons, including his misogyny and the way he seems to think women can't resist him. I guess I also like him because I know, like you said, that this character seems to be the opposite of what Hape Kerkeling is actually like. You know you're actually safe and everyone interacting with him (assumably) is actually perfectly safe.😅 Btw., his "home" as shown in the video, the way he lives, seems as "spießig" as a home can get, on the outside, as well as on the inside (I don't know how to translate "spießig" correctly, maybe you could look it up somewhere). Also, the name itself, "Horst Schlämmer" feels uncomfortable in combination with the character, because "Schlämmer", reminds of "schlemmen", which translates to "to feast". Horst is a name that can sound pretty "spießig", as well.
@alicemilne144413 күн бұрын
The equivalent of "spießig" for Scotland would be "wally dugs on the mantlepiece" or "flying ducks on the wall". Wally dugs are twin porcelain King Charles spaniels set on the "Kaminsims". Flying ducks on the wall are a set of three wild ducks in different sizes mounted on the wall in a rising formation.

Horst Schlämmer is one of Hape's iconic alter egos. He's that washed-up, shabby reporter from a local news outlet, prone to alcoholism and very direct in his demeanor. He's just a guy you'd see from a distance and you can already literally smell the stale schnaps and meatball sandwiches in the air. He's speaking in a somewhat slurred Rhenish accent and he represents a certain stereotype of man who's sometimes maybe not that great when it comes to political correctness and some do's and don'ts - but he still is (maybe because of that) *a fxxing icon* ...
@boraonline703614 күн бұрын
A logical move to watch something with HaPe as his character "Horst Schlämmer". That character already exists since quite some time , but still his latest (I think) and also his most popular character. Just the way he talks makes it funny and very unique! 😂 About his name "Hape": It stands for his full first name which is Hans-Peter, or Hape is shorter. And by the name if someone has such a double Name in germany, you can't just say one of the two. So in his case not just Hans or nit Just Peter, it's always both!
@davec60165 күн бұрын
'since quite some time'... oh that brings back memories. I ran into quite some English speaking Germans in my time that used that phrase so weirdly ! The translation took some liberties. For example he say "Schätzelein" a lot as a form of adressing his potential future "acquaintance". The captions translte it as "my girl", "my chick", "my little girl", very weirdly, whereas it would be more fittingly be translated as "sweetheart", "sweetie pie" or "little Darling". And there are some other questionable ttanslations. I get what they are trying - it's very hard to translate this kind of language, because it is playing with cultural sensitivities. Horst Achlämmer muxes professional sphere with private sphere and slang, gets inappropriately but charmingly flirty, gets too close gives too mich information, and its cringey, a bit repulsive but at the same time endearing somehow. And its all based in how Hape Kerkeling walks the line between too much and just right.

Oh, you should definitely look into more stuff with Hape. He's brilliant. Look for his former TV-Show „Darüber lacht die Welt“. It's basically “Candid Camera” but what makes it so good is all the different characters he plays in this show to fool people. Sadly some gets lost in translation. He is great in doing dialects and languages as well. I checked some clips but the automatically generated Subs from KZbin are atrocious. 1. Horst Schlämmer is Hape Kerkeling's favourite fictional character. 2 Schlämmer is a journalist ... the deputy editor-in-chief of a small provincial newspaper. 3. He wears a cheap suit and a cheap coat in the style of Inspector Columbo from the Hollywood series. 4. He has unkempt teeth, which is symbolised by dentures. This results in a special way of speaking. 5. Schlämmer has an alcohol problem at the end of his professional career. "Dornkaat", maybe you know the german brand. He is almost always slightly drunk in the sketches. 6. Hape Kerkeling explained about the character (analogously): "It's the summary of many sleazy journalists I've met over the decades. A bit of everything combined in one person. 7. There are several sketches with this fictional character Horst Schlämmer. One better than the other. And many better than the one presented here. 8. Hape Kerkeling then used this fictional character to make a cinema film. In it, he plays Horst Schlämmer, who runs for the German parliament (Bundestag) to become Federal Chancellor of Germany (to replace the then Chancellor Mrs Merkel). 9. Hape Kerkeling has announced this year (2024) that he will be playing Horst Schlämmer again in 2025 after a year-long break from acting (he wrote books). Have a nice day.
