They are going to hate King Diamond (my prediction) but I do agree they should do a song by him. King was one of the pioneers of extreme (death, black, goth, horror, thrash)...he was the tadpole and should be important to this channel given that V&S have embraced the extreme genres more than any other react channel.

Why the new generation hates people that can actually sing? Anyway bad news, Rob is already the best metal singer for more than 4 decades till now. You can't convice people otherwise. Its like saying freddy mercury has bad vocals for hard rock, or pavarotti has bad vocals for an opera

yeah, that thing he said like "dude, back off we know you can hit the not, it dosn't work on this song" i was like WTF, that's the highlight of the song, Halford can sing high and low, and when he does sing low, they're like "i was waiting for the high pitch voice, it wouldf it" (the JP "angel" reaction) and here they're like go lower... they just don't get the beauty of a clean trained voice

Sori...I think your idea of metal was established with modern Metal sub-genres and as a result when exposed to the original article, you were unpleasantly surprised or taken off guard. But, make no mistake, this is Original Heavy metal, and the vocals were often imitated in the 80's with many bands.

Rob halford is one of the greatest vocalist of metal... He was one of the guys that dictated what would be the metal scene in the 70's and later in the 80's, also his capacity to reach those high pitch notes is out of this world...it is a shame that screaming became such a cliche and overused at the 80's power metal

Man, you cannot say Painkiller makes you laugh. That song is one of the most beautiful masterpiece in the Metal History and the Halford's performance is one of the greatest vocal stuff ever made. Well, I can understand you don't like it….no, sorry, I wanna be honest: if you love metal, you cannot absolutely underestimate Painkiller's vocal line. XD Sorry man, nothing against you, but that quote was a great fault. No will to be rude against you and Sori, of course.

OK, you are right concerning the personal opinion. Otherwise, if you are a real metalhead, you won't ever say Rob Halford's vocals make you laugh, 'cause that would mean you don't know metal. I say again: I respect his own music preferences, but I have some genuine doubts about his knowledge of metal music….and I say it that way 'cause I am a web journalist very educated about heavy metal. This music is my life. Anyway, like we are used to say in Italy 'The World is wonderful because has several different points of view'. Stay metal, brother!! Have a nice day and thanks for the quote!!

Painkiller is actually the worst Priest has ever sounded. That is commercial garbage. Listen to every Priest song and you will see it. Rob was getting ready to leave the band at the time because he thought Priest was old and needed a new sound. He was wrong of course and coming back to the band and them going back to their true sound is all the proof you need.

"Rob's voice is unforgivable..." ? ! You could have gone with "kinda hard on the ears" or "not my cup of tea", but no you went with "unforgivable" ? ! I... just... I... but... VIn and Sori, I like you guys. I want to like you guys, but it's like you're just throwing away diamonds, you know ! I mean real gems, here. Rob Halford does have an amazing range, but he is known for his screams. Does he play that up too much ? I love it, but I can understand having another taste. Judas Priest IS a seminal band, a poster child for Metal. Judas Priest has soooo many awesome songs. In my iTunes JP has 29 "5 Star" rated songs and another 30 "4 Star", so my absolute favorite followed by AC/DC and Metallica. I hope you can open your mind to them some more... like have a KZbin playlist running in the background when doing housework or cleaning the garage or playing a game or something, where you can be surprised and amazed at the amazing tunes that catch your attention. If you really have a hard time with Rob's screams, look for some of his other songs that showoff his vocal range. You liked the musicianship and aggression of "Painkiller" look up "Hard as Iron" or "You've Got Another Thing Comin" or "Turbo Lover" on KZbin. If you like the subject matter of "Victim of Changes", maybe you'd like "Devil's Child". If you like heart-felt genuine lyrics, then "Breaking the Law", "Out in the Cold", " Beyond the Realms of Death" or "When the Night Comes Down" or Halford's "Silent Screams", "Resurrection" or Fight's "Into the Pit" or "Nailed to the Gun". If you like post-appocalyptic sci-fi themes, try "Metal Gods", "The Sentinel" or "Blood Red Skies". If you want to just cruise around and have fun , "Wild Nights, Hot and Crazy Days" or "Locked In", "Hell Bent For Leather", of Fight's "Little Crazy"

I agree that music is very subjective. For example, I absolutely adore Rob Halfords vocals but couldn't get into King Diamond. But seriously, stop with the Tool worship. You need to be a little objective if you're trying to be good reviewers. They're good but they don't hold a candle to Judas Priest in terms of what they've done for metal.

For me (and a lot of people) the epic vocals are what makes the song, I would find it boring without them. I get that higher vocals aren't for everyone but I just don't get how you could scoff at them like you're disgusted. He clearly has A LOT of talent, he has a higher octave range than just about anyone in popular music including Mariah Carey and he does it in tune. He also has a ton of hit songs where he doesn't even go high, you guys picked the two songs where he was purposely attempting vocal gymnastics.

Sori truly looks bored with the entire thing. Vin seemed to like the jam of it. There is no question of JP's status as metal gods, even by modern bands like Gojira, Opeth, or Metallica and Megadeth. I appreciate your genuine attempt to appreciate the Priest. Fair enough. I won't request any other Priest songs. LOL. I have to admit it's pretty refreshing to meet those who don't like Judas Priest. This was the extreme of the extreme in 1976. This is why Judas Priest is fundamental to the evolution of heavy metal. I agree with Vin you can hear where later bands took it to the next steps - with these older songs you have to understand this was the first generation and where the genre was evolving. Halford is kind of an acquired taste, some will get it others won't...is high pitch screaming vocals more extreme or incomprehensible compared to cookie monster vocals? Halford's voice is the signature of Judas Priest. "Another woman's got her man" - he does not like or want to accept this "whiskey woman" - he is saying when she on the sauce she is this woman that he does not want...he wants the sober version.

@MGdelOeste

I've always have the feeling that for some people high pitched vocals are more 'incomprehensible' than 'cookie monster' ones because they find it more ridiculous... probably because they relate this way of singing with something femenine, something a 'tough man' shouldn't do. Which is actually a quite reactionary and sexist way of thinking, if you ask me. It's sad we still have this kind of prejudices in 2022.

With all due respect, as I do understand your position, and I understand your ears may not be drawn to a certain type of heavy music, again with all due respect, you have no business reviewing or critiquing a Judas Priest song after saying that "maybe they will redeem themselves". Silence is a great way of respecting one of the most important bands in the 50+ years of modern heavy music. Either take a bow or leave it alone respectfully.

I don't have a problem if you don't like this, but if you are not gonna be objective, why are you doing a reaction vid? If you are gonna measure every song against Tool, there is no point in you continuing this series. Tool has a very unique sound and is not comparable to anyone else. BTW, bored by Gojira but cool with Tool? I dig Tool but they have a ton of long winded, repetitive Rif, very boring songs. But I get it, we each dig what we dig. I've got no problem with that. But you need to ensure us that you are gonna be objective or you risk losing us as viewers. Good Luck guys, I still a subscriber and I wish you all the best.

That's exactly what I'm worried about at the moment. Sori is awesome in a lot of ways and seems to be loving a lot of very complicated, interesting and intelligent modern metal/prog, but she doesn't seem too objective about anything that isn't like that at the moment and objectivity is so important within the sphere of reaction videos. It's why Lost in Vegas are so good. What they lack in the lyrical breakdowns they make up for in truly trying to be objective about every song they listen to. I love this channel so I'm not giving up on it or anything like that, but I am worried that Sori's becoming a bit set in her ways already and not willing to open her mind up a bit more.

I guess the prevailing issue is that it seems like you're comparing most of what you're hearing to the complexity of bands like Ne Oblisviscaris and Tool and music is made in so many different genres and sub-genres. You're not going to get the kind of mental trip you get from Tool by listening to a Judas Priest song, so that needs to be at least a little contextualised in terms of what they meant to do and the era in which it was made. This is all aside from the chief point, which is that you're not required to like anything loads of people like or dislike it either! I just worry that you might be becoming a bit too set on the proggier end of things and not wanting to give anything simpler a fair chance.
@RiOrtiz3
@RiOrtiz3 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sori, thank you for the reply. Like I said, I don't have an issue with what you like or don't like. Music is very personal, and I agree, taste is completely subjective. However you are trying to sell us on a Reaction channel, among the other things that you are planning. But for us, the viewer, we should expect you to go into a song with an objective mind. Because if you don't, I'll only watch the vids for songs that I personally don't know that well. And that has already started to happen. Why watch a vid when I've got a very good idea how you'll react. I only watched this one cuz I'm an old time JP fan and i dig it when someone younger finds greatness.... Yes it's a fine line and I'm not trying to bust your chops. I like you guys and that's why I said something. Judas Priest are pretty reliable for writing good ballads. “Before The Dawn” is kinda boring but I’ve liked the rest. “Angel” was a standout track on Angel Of Retribution. The album itself feels like a retrospective of the band as individual songs feel like they came from different time periods of the band. I like it quite a bit for that aspect.

I’m generally willing to put up with bad vocals if the music behind it is really good. I think metalheads are willing to make that sacrifice. For example, I don’t think anyone would say that Matt Pike from High On Fire is a good vocalist but the riffs that he writes are fucking awesome so I’m willing to put up with them. I’ll then proceed to cover up the fact they’re not good by saying they’re “charming” or something of the sort.

Just bear in mind that this music is 40 years old (was made in the mid 70's). Its very much a "product of its time". If you want to listen to a Judas Priest song without much (if any) of his trademark falsetto, try "Turbo Lover" or "Monsters of Rock"

Yeah, the high vocal screams really work with this song according to fans. It really emphasizes the pain described in the song and transfers it to our own mood. I firmly believe; because you're not used to these vocals at all you quickly find it disengaging as it doesn't feel natural to you and so doesn't create the same effect. I say this because I was feeling similar to you many years ago when I was in your shoes. But when you get more used to it, you don't get disengaged to the song quickly, you keep engaged and go with it and then it begins to resonate with you. Give it time, maybe years... you like the music it will help you. I always say Painkiller is a wrong song to start Judas Priest. Check out; *Beyond The Realms Of Death, Dreamer Deceiver* for similar songs to this. And check out; *Desert Plains, Living After Midnight, Breaking the Law, The Sentinel* for more easier listening hard rock vibed songs from them. And check out *A Touch Of Evil* for one from the Painkiller album that you'd find more close to your taste.

I agree with other comments. Sori, you do seem to be biased to the 90's and on music. That's the problem with starting in a certain timeline and then going back. If I were going to introduce you to metal; I wouldn't even start with actual metal. You'd hear early Preist, Kiss, and Deep Purple, first. Then we'd go into the 80's and so forth. You saw kids loving Metallica's Load album but when the went back to Master of Puppets; they couldn't understand it or even like it. Vin, Painkiller was their attempt at staying relevant when bands like Pantera, Metallica, and Megadeth were the chart toppers. As you delve into Preist more, you'll see the progression of their sound.

Pretty freaking heavy for the 70's. This is my favorite Priest song, well this one and Beyond the Realms of Death. Both are masterpieces. The true first metal band in my opinion, yes more than Sabbath honestly. Halford also,has one the most ranged vocals of all time in any genre and even today his voice is still there sounding good. Oh and when George Thorogood drinks alone, he prefers to be by himself haha ;)

The song became victim of changes in 1975 , when rob added the light part of the song of a travk of his ex band Lord s lucifer red lady something .

Ok, one last thing. I find it funny that you guys loved Cradle of Filth and despise Halford's vocals. I used to hate CoF because of Dani's high C vocals (I am reformed now, tho:P). Judas Priest is such an influential band also because Halford's way of singing has been copied and developed by many meta vocalists especially in power metal but probably also in black metal. Funnily enough black metal also took many image cues from Judas Priest what with all of their spikes and leathers :D

These comments are killing me. I grew up with this band. For one I would have recommended the live version on Unleashed in the East, studio albums back then didn’t have the greatest sound which is where some of the criticism is coming from. Two - watch some old videos for those who think Halford is “trying too hard” he hits those notes as easy as I’ve ever seen. The high pitched singing accents the power of the songs perfectly and to watch Sori cringe every time a high note came in was disappointing. I’ve seen thousands of people smile and raise their fists when he goes there. You looked like I look when I’m stuck listening to bad karaoke. Also smh at Vin when he said that the band should tell Rob not to do that.....ok so should they turn in their millions in royalty checks or do you wanna turn in your man card? Love your points of view but definitely disagree with you guys on this one

This is actually not the first time I've heard someone complain about Rob Halfords high pitched vocals, I kinda get it but since very few singers can reach that high octave it seems like a waste not to make use of that high range. If you think about the place they were in at the time then the singer was a really good way to make you stand out from the competition and Rob really did stand out and in more ways than in just vocal abillity. Rob is my favorite metal singer of all time (Ronnie James Dio is the second one) but I think that it's also about what you're used to when it comes to singing, this style Rob does is not used so often anymore (because most singers can't do it anyway) so it can sound really weird for someone that is not used to it. But then again objective vocal abillity does not mean that you have to like the singing style and the singer, I respect that.

'You've got another thing comin' is their biggest hit. And, should be the 'first' song from them, to hear. You started way too late with Painkiller, and way too early with Changes. All their best stuff was '77 - '88. 'Breakin the Law, Green Manaleashi, Heading out to the Highway, Some Heads are Gonna Roll, and The Sentinal, maybe some TurboLover. You just judged Babe Ruth from his 40's, then you went to when he was 19, not when he was at his best. They owned MTV for a decade.

I told my buddy we are going right now to buy Bose 901 speakers. That we went to a local bar to hear a band play. At the end of the night one of my roommates got on stage and said Party at our house. There were probably 60 people in the bar. They all showed up. I put Sad Wings of Destiny on. I cranked up the volume to the max. The Cops showed up. No one could hear them knocking on the door. So they left. Awesome party.

Anton sindahl Halford actually uses head voice not falsetto for the most part. That's why he sounds so piercing and full when he goes high. It is more overwhelming than falsetto or modern screaming styles (such as in black metal) or modern mainstream styles (BFMV). So it's probably shocking for a first timer. Personally Halford screams are way way more impressive. The above just sound weak and try hard imo

Rob once said in a interview that he picked out the BDSM leather and studs because he was trying to show he was gay .. and it was eating him up killing him slowly . It's very difficult for modern humans to truly understand the raw, unbridled nature of true Metal or Rock n Roll. In the mid 90's, Metal took a horrible nose dive and Rock n Roll simply died. That being said, I understand why modern people don't understand quality due to the garbage they have been exposed to and their acceptance of it as "good". Vin seems to be somewhat closer to getting it than Sori. Priest is a legend, undeniable as they are powerful. Those of us born in the early 80's and before should feel lucky... The poor chums of this generation think emotive bands like Killswitch Engage or Avenged Sevenfold are Metal. It's truly a sad state of affairs.

NxtGenCJM I am well aware of great underground bands, as I was a promoter many years. I had the great pleasure of booking bands such as Vader, Vital Remains, Master, Absu, Sadistic Intent, Horrid, etc. I have seen awesome newer bands such as Toxic Holocaust, Municipal Waste, Ram, Power From Hell, Witchaven, etc. What I was speaking of initially is that most modern folk who have only been exposed to more mainstream modern stuff have a very difficult time acclomating to the raw, feral nature of the original juggernaut Metal sound.

NxtGenCJM must agree. I was born mid 90s too. The mainstream modern "metal" bands leave me cold. They seem to be just ticking the boxes - but not really feeling it. They do screaming or growls; distortion; blast beats; speed etc but it's sterile. No balls at all. Real metal is like dropping an anvil on your head lol - it's raw and powerful. Not this soft stuff. The typical fare of Avenged Sevenfold, black Veil Brides, Bullet for my Valentine etc who get lumped in with metal and alternative are just boy bands with guitars to me. It's the exact same business plan, but targetting the alt crowd.

What Priest did is something unique, the different styles they use and reaching high pitched vocals that only opera singers had at that time it's truly that one thing in a thousand years, Black Sabbath might have created Metal but to me Judas Priest took it to the real level where it should be and open the door for every band that came after, ofc it's my opinion, music now is really terrible but that's what people ask, diferente generations have different needs, there is no conflict or difficulty now so no one wants deep difficult music, they want happy easy going music that can be listen once and be forgotten for another(despacito as an example, no one cares or listen to it anymore, i think.) but in the 60-70 you had people that came back from the korean war, went to vietnam war, watergate happen, the USSR cuban missile crisis, etc.. music was an escape to the hard reality of life, at least i think it was like that and the reason why so many great talent was born.
