It's amazing how such a great song did not become a hit of all times and peoples. This is a real masterpiece that everyone should know

This is a epitaph of the victims the "Reverend " Jim Jones, who lead his followers to a settlement in Guyana, and poisoned them with cyanide laced kool-aid, killing them all, elderly, woman and children first. Knowing the inherent darkness and evil behind this song makes it hit a bit different. The story needs to be remembered and song is a good way to do this.

This song always gives me chills having had read a ton of stuff about the Jim Jones cult. One of the most frightening parts is at the very end when Eric Adams screams “Motheeer! MOTHER!! MOTHEEER !! “ It’s heart breaking because I have read war veterans sharing stories when their friends are dying on the battlefield. Young boys, late teens or in their early 20’s, children sent to God knows where, at the threshold of death are crying for their mothers and it’s heartbreaking. It gave me chills by merely thinking about it for the rest of the night I read these things

The darkly humorous way the lyrics tackle the dark (and very real) subject matter is my favorite part. "We're dying of thirst!" is very bleakly funny in context, but never makes me forget what the song is about. The song came out only six years after Reverend Jim and his followers killed themselves in the jungle. References abound to life in the encampment, and tell a story from the followers' perspective. The riffs evoke this mad chaotic world of Jim Jones' cult perfectly, and certain parts bring to mind unforgettable on-the-ground photographs of Jonestown's 900+inhabitants bodies decomposing in the harsh Guyana sun. 'Bigfoot' was the name of a torture device used by Jones to keep his cultists in line, literally submerging them underwater until they nearly died. That final line, "Mother, mother, mother", was a reference to something said during the infamous death tape -- Jones admonishing his followers for not laying down with dignity as they choke to death around him. All in all this is one of Manowar's most powerful songs, perfectly in tune with the over-the-top, "can it be real?" nature of the subject matter.

A song from my favorite Manowar album! Thanks Sabina. Thor the Powerhead, Mountains, Guyanna... wow The song is about the tragedy of Jonestown, where the cult led by Jim Jones engaged in mass suicide/murder mostly by cyanide poison distributed in a flavored drink (the origin of the expression drinking the kool-aid) after Congressman Leo Ryan led an investigation into the commune and was murdered while boarding a return flight with defectors. I never really got a western vibe from this one, but I see how someone might, now that you mention it.

Great song, from Joey's unique bass style on the intro to Eric's amazing vocals. The lyrics tell a real life story and prove Manowar can do way more than just the "battle/true metal" stuff that I also love but a lot of people use to dismiss them. Very cool to see someone starting out on their Manowar listening journey, enjoy 😄

If memory serves, this song is about an active cult in 1970’s Guyana. Typically cults are run by various levels of maniac with high levels of self delusion. I think this cults actions resulted in the deaths of many hundreds of people. Leaving aside the theme, this song is slightly reminiscent of early Black Sabbath…I love the less than subtle guitar riff and a great mid song solo…how rock should be played. Sabina..another example of reacting to the lyrics without the distraction of a video…loved it.

Great reaction! None of the many "super famous vocal experts on KZbin" had the audacity to analyze and react to a wonderful song by a band (Manowar) that, in fact, and it is undeniable, irrefutable, released sacred albums in the 80s, and which has an absurd vocalist (Eric Adams), an extraterrestrial, one of the greatest vocalists in the history of popular music, not just specifically Heavy Metal. Fact.

He gave up after the bass intro 😂 Check out Manowar - Dark Avenger and Defender with a narration by legendary actor Orson Welles If you want to check out guitarist Ross The Boss Friedman before Manowar look into his old band The Dictators doing Search & Destroy. Originally by The Stooges. Also present in The Dictators were Mark The Animal Mendoza on bass. Known for Twisted Sister. On Search & Destroy he plays more bass than he did in all his years in Twisted Sister.

Yeah, some of the lyrics are part comedy....He told us life was just a hotel, time to check out when he rang a bell. I agree but, the mentality for me, when I listened to this record in the 80's, was like how foolish can you be. A cult leader who sucks people in and takes everything they have. I listened to a lot of different metal groups during the 80's. It was a scary time. The cold war with Russia was a huge thing. A lot of metal was centered around the end of the world scenario. And then came hair metal. Not good. But, that's another story. Thanks so much for reviewing and Epic song from Manowar. They are True Metal.

Western style : probably comes from the native amerindian style of the rhythm. It seems that the main leader and bassist, Joey deMaio, has cherokee blood (or is it just a legend he likes to spread ? At least he has the look) ; and some of their songs are about native americans (at least Crazy Horse, maybe others)

@johnwiesner6534 Жыл бұрын
I like the melody and heaviness of the song. But this work is not fun or about fun. In the early 70's a cult leader named Jim Jones took a couple of hundred "followers" from the States to Guyana to be out of sight. Soon after a young lady wrote home about the sinister things that were going there. It prompted a Congressman to go there for an inspection and got shot to death for his efforts. Jones realized that the game was over and had gallons of poisoned Kool Aid mixed up and all of the "followers" drank it at his request. Men, women and children complied. A couple of days later the carnage was discovered. Nobody was left standing. There is a cameraman's video showing the shooting, but I cannot remember if he lived or not. This is were the saying "Don't drink the Kool Aid came from" which is used over here in the States, warning that you were about doing something bad.
