Story time. My friends and I resented Purple Rain in High School. We were hardliners who were fans during the years when he was considered fringe or underground status. In Prince fan parlance we're called "First Dynasty or Kingdom" and our wheelhouse is the "Dirty Mind" through 1999 albums. We liked When Doves Cry because it was different sounding but thought everything else was a sellout. When this concert was released on VHS we got to this song and something weird came over the room that I can only in my 50's now put words to. We realized that someone like him was too good to belong to a few, when he played that outro solo he belonged to the pantheon and the world. Watching this in silence with my friends all those years ago I realized we were letting him go. Kind of like watching your kid pull out of the driveway for college and you just know things will never be the same again. We thought mainstream acceptance would weaken our appreciation but it didn't, it just changed and evolved.

Get back to me when your wheelhouse was For You on vinyl and onwards. That was mine and people I knew were in agreement with me that Purple Rain was a classic Prince album moving in to a new period with a different sound (see Computer Blue) while still retaining Prince vibes from Dirty Mind and 1999 (Darling Nicki lyrics, Let's Go crazy solo). Every Prince fan knew that he changed up his sound and style on every album (for instance you can instantly tell something off 1999, even the B-Sides, just by the Lindstrom drum sound) so I will never get people being surprised that Purple Rain had a different sound, especially since he actually gave over some composition control. Then again, sounds like the same sort of people that called Metallica sellouts for Load and Reload rather than just accepting they wanted to do something different and it wasn't for you.
@cryptozoomauler55056 ай бұрын
@@knytestorme Metallica invited their critics because they had famously said they would never sell out and never go on MTV. It didn't take them long before they did.

Seeing Prince live was always amazing. One of the best performers to ever grace a stage. You can't teach charisma and that special " It" factor that only a few performers and musicians have. Mesmerizing could do it all as a musician who just lived to create and play music. Its hard to believe he is so overlooked as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Was at this show. Lived in Rochester, NY and drove to Syracuse to see this show. AMAZING! One of the best live performers ever. The Prince & The Revolution craze at this time was surreal. The talent is unbelievable! People talk about the greatest guitarist of all-time but Prince is rarely mentioned and he should be. The dude could play the (bleep) out of a guitar, amongst other instruments.

BUT still to this day, THIS concert stands for me, as my absolute nr. 1concert I have ever seen and heard. Even I did not even attend the concert but only watched it on screen. - AND this Purple Rain solo is by far the best solo I have ever heard. Prince was doing a bathroom break and changing into new clothes during the early "break" of this song while Wendy played rhythm guitar and passed out flowers. This was the finale after all. This 6 minute intro was not by accident. But when Prince came back from his break? Holy fucking hell. What a finale. If you include the "orchestral" outro, this is a 20+ minute version of Purple Rain. Just Gorgeous. If you have ever questioned whether Prince is a guitar god, this is fucking proof that he is. PERIOD. DONE. I bought this VHS in 1985 "Prince & The Revolution Live" in Syracuse, NY. Best live performance of Purple Rain ever!!! 17 minutes!! It was total heaven . We tried to get backstage but a no go but had great seats. Im 57 saw many many legends and live shows and Prunce fan since middle school when he was totally a taboo sort of artist. Purple Rain came out summer before college and it was insane. He would improvise and add tunes within the tune. Always had to be creative as new music was running through him all the time. He said it was a curse and a blessing. Imagine talking to someone and creating a new song in his mind at the same time. He once said he often had to leave a social situation because the music in his head was too strong. He also got bored easily, always wanting to move on with his creations. Listen to interviews with his first engineer for five years, Susan Rogers and you will understand the pressure such a genius was under, that admittedly he put himself under due to his great work ethic.
