Fun fact…while Alvin York was going through the deeds that saw him awarded with the Medal of Honor, the Lost Battalion was going through their ordeal just a few miles away at the same time. Also, side note. Audie Murphy in WWII was awarded more medals than York. To Hell and Back is about Audie Murphy.

Murphy had more Medals awarded to him by the Department of Defense for multiple achievements. York got medals from various countries. So it’s a poor comparison.

The story actually goes a bit like this: York managed to get around the side a bit uphill of the gun nest. He used the noice of the machine gun to mask his own shots, thus irritating the germans. Like they couldn't hear his shots an soldier started falling left and right. This was called a Turkey shoot, a technik York was tought by his uncle (or grandpa). Once the germans managed to spot him out he started firing with his handgun at the charging soldiers. He landed every shot from his handgun. The germans couldn't believe that he was just one man on his own and assumed there must be more american gunners hiding. So they surrendered. What a great story that is.
@caseyhart9916
@caseyhart9916 2 жыл бұрын
The "Turkey Shoot" was when he shot the charging Germans with his .45. He'd used the technique that his grandfather (or it might have been his uncle) had taught him for hunting turkeys. Its basically this, if you start off by shooting the first turkey in a group, the rest of them will see it happen and immediately scatter, but if you shoot at the one that's bringing up the rear, the others won't see him go down, so they won't realize they're being shot at and you can just go up the line.

Audie Murphy exceeded York’s medal count in WWII but not by much. Alvin York is my favorite MOH recipient by far. His story is touching and down to earth. He was a pacifist who swore to his God to do no harm. Until his only friend died in his arms to the machine gun nest mentioned in the song. He reputedly snapped and charged up a hill through the fire and enfiladed the nest. Shot many men until his 1903 Springfield bolt gun went dry and pulled his 1911 and charged into the trench from a hill. Wrath of God moment. I get shivers thinking of the story. Definitely recommend reading the official commendation for his Medal of Honor. Most deserved….

So, this is essentially what made York a badass, granted I might be slightly incorrect on some thibgs, but this is the abridged version. York along with a few other men snuck up to a machine gun nest manned by the solders he would eventually capture. He set himself up in a hidden place and started picking off men at the back of the trenches, in a similar manner as a turkey shoot, and by the time the enemy noticed him, he had killed so many men, they though an entire battalion somehow sneaked up on them with how many dead comrades there were. York was eventually disvovered, and I can't remember the exact number, but around 4-6 men charged him with bayonets, to which York pulled out his pistol and shot them all dead before they could reach him. Then, the commander of the enemy battalion tried to shoot at York with his pistol, and missed every shot until the gun was empty. York then called for the commander's surrender, to which he complied. This led to a group of like 4-6 men, including York, marching 132 enemy soldiers to be captured.

To give this context, he became the leading man of the squad after leadership was either wounded or dead: This man rallied 19 men, and pushed into a flank in the attempt to find a path to break the stalemate. On the way they got lost, but generally could keep a remembrance of the wooded zone to the German lines when they came across a German patrol (turned out to be medics) and a fight insued where the German troops hauled ass and ran back to there lines. They dipped out a different thicket line and York and his merry band of 82nd Infantry detachment came across a RnR (rest and Relaxation) station where the German infantry were resting out of line of sight, and those men surrendered instantly, however the noise and racket caught the attention of the German MG nest 40 yards to there left, the MG was moved to that flank and opened up without issue killing German infantry and cutting down one of York's friends from Training (The only American Casualty in this excursion). In his actions following his friends death, he charged to a blind spot, crept up to the nest, and accurately placed 5 shots on target killing all hands of the MG08 Crew and reloading, his subsequent fight there caught notice of the enemy that heard all the fighting and they charged him, he shot the rifle downing another 4, with no time to reload and a rush coming out he dropped his rifle and pulled a 1911 which he turned onto the charging force killing another 4 which the officer in the back shouted he would surrender with his men if York would stop shooting. This was trusted as he let them come out of the thicket, a young soldier tried to pull a grenade and throw it at York, but York was faster and shot the man dead. There was no more issue of this mans wrath, full surrender was given, the soldiers abandoned there arms and marched with York and his 18 soldiers back to there lines, at this point he captured only 63 men and had killed 12 men. Along the way he meets and captures another 2 retreating squads, of which one man refused to give up his Weapon and York unhesitating shot him dead on the spot. Once he was done he got back to base and turned the Captured soldiers over to the Army command unit, and he was called to the General's area and of which stated "So York, I've heard you have captured the whole German Army" to which York Replied "No Sir, only 132". His actions wasn't covered by the Press because they wanted to get action of US Soldiers holding out against all odds, a powerful last stand, a means to show the world the US is kicking ass and showing it was right to send our soldiers to war. After a while French Press came and interviewed York and that spread like wildfire and even got released in the US as a separate paper-line painting York as a Hero and then it late went to a film where they didn't do this man justice because nobody would believe it! (I didnt pay attention and forgot its in the lyrical video so the statements are there already, I'm a dork, excuse that sadness)

As a very young child i had the honor of hanging around with Edward Schneider (my mom took care of him) who was the 3rd battalion sarg major for the 328th who was the only one to be wounded in action. i did ask him if he knew Alvin York he said he never got to meet him. but he did tell the story about how he was wounded "there we were crossing this big field during a big push and out of no were a single hun fighter comes flying over and everyone hits the ground , there i am laying under the only bush in the field and out of ALL the troops in that field , that bastard hits me with a bomb" and he would lean to 1 side and point to his butt saying "Bastard got me right in the ass" and he would also show me and my friends his uniforms, he did give me a few of his books before he passed. every time i hear this song i can picture him telling this story pointing at his butt lol

Alvin didn't decide to capture them. The machine gun nest started gunning down friend and foe alike. One of Alvin's best friends got killed by them and he just snapped. He then charged the nest circled around it and killed the crew. From there things just get strange. I don't know all the details but he then killed a group of soldiers. From there another group came but the lieutenant if the group convinced the group to stand down and surrender. Now Alvin had to escort them back to American line with like a squad of 7 or 10 people. On his way back he kept more groups of German soldiers who surrendered upon seeing the other German captives or shortly after Alvin put a few of the ones who resisted down. From there he made his way back with 132 prisoners in tow. I'm surprised no one tried to jump him.

Sgt York was more impressive because his faith that they talk about meant it was actually going against the will of God. He risked the fires of Hell itself to save his fellow man. And as many have mentioned Audie Murphy is the most decorated soldier of American history. He also suffered horrible PTSD and then came home and filmed a movie about his actions. I can't imagine living through that horror and then coming home to reenact it. Both men are rightfully honored to this day.

The episode for this song from Sabaton history is probably my favourite. (Alongside "Inmate 4859") The story of Alvin york is one of those that Hollywood can't make a movie about, it's too unrealistic.
