My favorite sandwich cake is the one my mom used to make for my birthdays. Alternating slices of whole grain and wheat toast bread with a sour cream,cream cheese and smoked ham filling topped thin slices of grilled roast beef, aged hard cheese,cucumber and cherry tomatoes. It was the kind of thing i would gladly eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner as long as i could.

Smörgåstårta is so good, my favorite is those with shrimps and salmon and it's very rare that someone in Sweden doesn't like smörgåstårta. You can buy a slice or a little one for 2 - 4 persons and also order a big one up to 6 - 15 persons if you have a party.

You can either buy a whole smörgåstårta or you just buy slices. Many of the usual stores have them (Coop, ICA, etc). And of course many bakeries and cafés! They can be eaten any day.. not just at celebrations. But! It is very popular to serve at birthday partiesy. Young and old enjoy it.. and all generations make them.. more or less advanced :). There are several variants of smörgåstårta.. "shrimp and salmon".. "ham and cheese" ... "herring and eggs and caviar" ... "turkey and roast beef" ... many more!

The shrimp version is actually very similar to shrimp sandwich or landgång. You can also use landgångsbröd or tea cake as bread.

You make a sandwich cake, for graduations, celebrations, birthdays, midsummer, funeral gatherings etc. You can buy an entire cake at a café or a slize. It's not jus an older generation thiung, it's just a very swedish thing, anyone makes it. maybee not teens and younger but adults. The toppings and fillings and even the bread can vary alot. Liver paté, salami, ham, cheese, all kinds of vegetables, mayonaisse, creme cheese, shrimp skagenröra, crayfish, salmon, lemon, basically anything honestly..and it just gets so moist, so damn delicious. it's better than any sadwich, and it's top tier as a cake as well. sometimes you serve both a normal sweet cake and a savoury sandwich cake at a birthday for example.

Had many of them, made many of them. It´s very common for big birthdays or other big celebrations here in Sweden. My favourite is cold smoked salmon and tuna. And mayo needs to be mixed with a little creme fraiche to cut some of the richness of the mayo. It is basically layered sandwiches that has been molded into a "cake" shape and garnished with eggs, salad and other stuff. Very tasty and there is soooooo many variations on this sandwich cake. Everyone has their favourite some even like the warm baked sandwich cake (think grilled cheese sandwich)

You can make it yourself and don't have to use the typical stuff that they talk about, I like it with italian 'tastes'. You make the rules based on what you like. It"s mostly for celebrations or funerals, not everyday. It's so good! 😊

I love smörgåstårta and make one for New Year every year, as it stores well and there are always leftovers to serve to the guests that becomes starving after drinking. It's a bit of a party food but also for funerals, as you only have to decorate it on the day it's being served and it doesn't need to be heated (there are varieties that are baked in the oven, but they are not common). What you stuff it with is a matter of personal preference, the one in the video is very simple, normally you use different mixes for the layers. One of my layers are made of crisp bacon mixed with a oven baked aubergine that I scrape out and mash. Eggs mixed with mayonnaise is a common layer. You really should try making one, it would make a good video. There are plenty of recipes online for you to try.

The best kind of smörgåstårta is the closest smörgåstårta. My grandmother made some really weird ones and they still came out pretty tasty. Whenever I make one I lean towards seafood and eggs but I also like to add some cheese (which is more common with meat based cakes). I kind of want to try and make a fusion smörgåstårta now...

Durring spring and summer you can find just slices in many places, take it to a picnic or lunch Usually more of a fancy thing youy can order a big one for funerals, midsummer, graduation or family gathering I'l definetly looks more intimidating to make than it is. Just a few seprate components that you then assemble as you like

You can make and eat the same day, but then the bread will be perceived as drier. You also moisten the bread overnight and then put it together the day after to eat almost immediately. Many have salty sticks to stick iceberg lettuce on the side. Those who like fish usually do with shrimp, salmon or tuna. There are also completely vegetarian versions.

If you want to speed up the "gooification" of the cake you can sprinkle water ontop of each layer before you add the filling/topping. I did this semi-professionally for a year and we used mineral water flasks with a thumb covering the opening and shaking it gently over the cake to get a very light covering. I've heard of others using spray bottles. I'd try without it first though to get a sense for how little is needed.

if you do seafood put egg in bottom, mix shrimp and crabfish whid dill, lemon ,mayo or creamfil, next layer Tuna whid red onion and lemon pepper, the decorate it whid egg, mayo shrimp salmon, black kaviar lemon, cucumber, and tomato and dill, its so good

You should really watch some of Robbaz cooking videos. He was mostly a let's play KZbinr, but also a trained chef, so he did do some "Cooking with the kock" videos, kock meaning something completely different in Swedish. You could try the Moose hamburger, pitepalt, or blood pancake videos for example.

A thing that can be difficult to get hold of outside of Scandinavia. They are prawns cooked in a special way. (how, I don't know) They are already prepared at sea on the fishing boats. I have tried to find prawns similar to the Scandinavian ones. I have applied in France, UK, Spain, the Netherlands. There are no prawns cooked in the same way. Britain and Europe have very tasteless prawns. In France, prawns only taste like salt water.

I belive its mostly was a rural thing.. at an funeral, weding, baptise.. there is a lot of people coming.. frome long away.. so after the cermonials, people need to take at least a "Fika", and get something to eat.. so they dont need to rush away! The perfect solution for that is a "smörgåstårta".. and coffe! Now aday.. one buy those or rather order them, to be delivered the day befor.. the gathering! The moste popular recepies.. is those with scimp and salmon.. second is proabably.. roastbeef and "pepparotskräm", = horse radish cream! And for the kids.. and as a desert, a ordinary sweet fruit cake.. if the gang is bigger! Otherwise.. we prefere open sandwishes at cafees, especialy shrimp sandwiches, but in fancy cafees one can buy small single portion Smörgåstårta!

Salmon is usually always on the ones with shrimps so weird you never eating one, but you can choose to only have shrimps of course, but there is options, those with roast beef is also common and tasty.

It was more popular about 20-30 years ago with dedicated stores everywhere. Today it´s less popular because of the big competition from McDonalds, Thai food, Sushi, Pizza and Kebab among others. I selldom eat it nowadays., but like it. Only a few stores have it. There are different sizes to buy.

I don't agree, smörgåstårta is common even today at least where i live in Sweden. We have it at work regularly or at a family party and also buy for my self from time to time and it's not hard to find at all. every supermarket with a delicate disc have it and almost all conditory have it. The fast food you mention is nothing that compete with smörgåstårta in my opinion.
