Spede was a serious chain smoker in real life and that might have contributed to his sudden death at 71. He died just days before the "nine-eleven" in 2001...

By some accounts he smoked approximately 80 cigarettes per day. It's a miracle he lived as long as 71 years😅

I remember this time so well, that shift when you could smoke in some places and in other places you couldn't, and then came the smoking ban when you couldn't smoke indoors at all anymore. I remember we talked about it a lot, like "how the heck can you go to bars and nightclubs but you can't smoke anymore?" I was a smoker back then as well. It's a long time now since I quit smoking and I'm glad about the smoking ban. Anyway, growing up I wasn't a Spede fan. I watched Speden Spelit sometimes and it could be good fun, but watching your video reviews of classic Finnish skits and humour shows makes me appreciate them a whole lot more than I did in my childhood/youth, so thank you for that.

The "smoking ban" in bars came about 20 years later than this sketch though.. (And it's not a total ban even today, because you can still smoke in separate smoking rooms.)

That place looked like a typical car service stations cafe in the 80's - and the waitress looked a bit like the late Princess Diana.

Times they are a changin. When I was a kid even in teachers common-room there was an ashtray and some pipes and cigs on the table. Some of them were battle hardened veterans from WWII and I can't imagine somebody deared to denie it from them. When I was in highschool in 80's age limit was 16 and just libraries and churches was smoke free. You could smoke in buses, trains, coffee shops, bars, restaurants and nobody gave a shit. I smoked some years too when I became 16 years old. I still use nicotin because of f*cking colitis ulcerosa but haven't smoked in decades.

The music in the beginning is from Beverly Hill Cop. Very 80s!😄 The place looks a like a typical cafe from Finland in the 80s and 90s. The Finnish language has changed a bit from that time. You used to call a place like that a bar. Where you could get a cup of coffee and a danish. Nowadays it´s called a cafe "kahvila". Bar is a place where you go to drink alcohol now.

My grandmother smoked till the end. I can still remember the smell in that house. When it was renovated, the smoke and tar had seeped in through several layers of wallpaper and paneling.
