This isn’t racist comedy. The show highlighted the ridiculous views and opinions of racist bigots such as the main character Alf Garnet. Sadly the irony was lost on the racist bigots who watched it. One of the most misunderstood shows of all time

It is not because the character was gay per se, it was because he worked for the council as a home help for the elderly in the local community and I think from memory the first time Mr Garnett met him, he was wearing Marigold rubber gloves after having just washed the dishes in the kitchen sink for Mrs Garnett. Mr Garnett could just as easily have called him something like feather duster or something similar and might have called him Marigold even if the character was not gay.
