You're right that this might have worked in the UK, except that they would've made the mistake of hosting it a Alton Towers or some other custom-built location, whereas the Dutch have plenty of little towns that have water ways to host this kinda thing. Imagine diving into the Manchester Ship Canal... not shown was an event where people had to jump off a high platform with some flying device and fly as long as possible (to land in the water), and the "race day" which was always held at the circuit at Valkenswaard, with events such as the caravan race you saw, but, more importantly the "reverse race" where the cars had to race around the circuit going in reverse

Yes, they often had a 'most cool design' price. The 3 fastest to accomplish the task got the gold, silver and bronze. There where a lot of variants of this show, like going over a canal on a very thin strip of wood, having a boat that could go up somehow to reach 10 meters, making a glider to see who got furthest, and much more, but the most often task was the slide down onto the water, then go to the bell as fast as possible. They did different towns each time, and the people just loved to go and watch everybody get wet, to tinker with their creations and see them fail (or work, rarely).

This show is nostalgia. There were a variety of different competitions, and every episode was focussed on one of them. Every show was also recorded in a different town/city in the Netherlands. And in the end you had 2 winners. The one with the best time and the one with the best "looking" vehicle. That's why you see many contraptions that look good but definitely aren't suited for the task at hand. Through the years there also have been other prizes, like the prize for the most unlucky contestant, the prize for the most original idea, etc.

This pushed me straight into a nostalgia rabbit hole 0.o! It was basically a combination of an advanced soapbox race with a parade carts. People spend months creating the most creative and funny carts and outfits. They actually have restarted the show this year but I doubt it can capture the same energy and mood as times just has changed. I doubt a bike with some cardboard creation buit around it will capture the same attention with everything we have now on TV and the internet. Kinda sad to see what we have lost, that we were happy with so little back in the day. If you like, we also had "Spel zonder grenzen" which had the same vibe.

A more accurate translation for the show is "on land, at sea, and in the air" signifying the different types of events they held. Not only was it about pageantry, but also advanced engineering (often carts would exists of multiple parts that could break loose from one another, an example being a combination of a boat cart, where the cart detaches upon entering the water launching the boat forward). Most often the goal was to ring the bell inside of the "zeepkist" (translating to soapbox, ) before it completely broke apart, the rules generally stated however that they did not have to survive the ordeal as long as it got you to the bell, in other editions i recall having to hook your contraption onto a hook, but more often than not it was a bell. Each group of contestants were timed, so the aim was to be the fastest to hit the bell preferably with a surviving "zeepkist" fighting against the time others had placed, there were also pageantry goals for the best looking "zeepkist", i don't recall if there were rewards for the winners. As for the different courses well, you'll see a lot of different types of them in the compilation. As for enjoyment, anyone liked it honestly, it was a family show, i'm still sad we lost this time, i believe somewhere during 2002-2004 we lost all the great Dutch shows, they just came to an end and nothing really replaced them, as with the UK and the US, it's all reality TV at this point.

Oh wow, this brings back memories! "Fiets 'm erin" was also a derivative of this show concept, still adopted by Red Bull to this day; "Red Bull Stalen Ros" (Across the Water). Let's face it, Red Bull makes us adults act like irresponsible 16-year olds with their "This will just be fine" mentality. And they're right, healthy dose of critical thinking required.. ..but you'll be fine!

This was such nostalgia for me, as a Dutch 32 y.o. I've never seen the one with the ice skaters before, but one of those (with the tie ropes) I remember seeing live-ish on TV as a kid. The very fast guy in the glasses was a regular that tried to have the best time for quite a few years in a row iirc. There were quite a few regulars (Johan Vlemmix, who entered 100 times in total and then became a jury-member, is the most well-known one), although of course most people entered for the first time usually. And to answer some of your questions: - As for why some of them look very well-made, as kind of carnival wagons; there were usually three separated prizes to win: one for the fastest, one for the best-looking/creative one, and one for the most unlucky one (usually failing just before the finish, or going very fast past the bell without ringing it, or getting pretty seriously injured, and stuff like that). - As for the time period: the very first one was in 1973, and (apparently) it's still active today. Although I personally saw it for the last time around 2008-2010. - The guy talking about the show and the whales, and you asked about whether he's famous: that's Ron Boszhard. He's been doing TV and theater for quite a while, and he was the presentator for Te land, ter zee en in de lucht between 2007-2010. - This video only showed some of the events, but over the decades there have been a total of 26 different ones. - (And yes, I also know Takeshi's Castle, although I've only seen it a few times, and usually on a UK or other foreign television channel, when we were just changing channels randomly. I don't recall seeing it on a Dutch TV channel.)

A foto in a English newspaper of a pilot who jumped of the Tower Brige (He was secured) gave a dutch tv director ( Rene Stokvis ) the idea for the show. It was on tv from 1973 till 2011. Suggestion to watch Dutch car racing while pulling caravans on a racing track. It is total chaos with caravans and cars fliping over. Also watch Dutch backwards racing where cars race each other in reverse gear on a racing track, . In general cars go slower driving in reverse gear but we he had a car here called DAF which could go really fast in reverse too that is how backwards racing came to be. Just search Google with the terms: achteruit race. Achteruit race means racing backwards with cars. It is the top video it shows backwards racing and caravan racing in one video P.s. This is also from Ter Land Ter Zee en in de Lucht tv program.

It started in early 70's and it's been on the air on public tv for over 40 years. The presenter you referenced to is a well known Dutch TV dude, but he's nothing compared to the legends who have presented this show in the past. There are loads of different contests as you could see in this compilation. I've only attended one once (as a child) the backward car race. It's epic! It's been off the air for about 10 years I think, but since this summer a commercial tv show (linked to the lottery) has taken over and brought it back on the air. It is no where near the quality it used to be though :(

I know the Japanese have some "similar" shows, but it has never really shown in the Netherlands. What I've seen of it those games are much more vicious, if not sadistic in its failure modes. Those "Te Land, Ter Zee, en In De Lucht" (On Land, At Sea, and In The Air") shows were a traveling TV-show that often got invited by (small) towns to create an event during the summer months. It started in 1973 with "Vlieg Er Eens Uit" where people tried to fly as far as possible in self-made aircraft launched from a platform (yes, Red Bull adapted that concept). The shows ran until 2011 having extended the concept with different weird competitions over the years.

think the reason why this was fun and succesful is first the different locations, we have lots of canals and harbours where we can host these kind of shows. But also the not beiing too serious and having a beer combined with a tiny bit of a challenge / engineering (there was always a twist and not just straight forward as a race down hill as mentioned Red Bull does). It was always in good spirit and yes there was a price for best looking vehicle. Universities, carnaval members everybody had a challenge so people were coming together.

This show is making a revival, it's a bit different though, safety rules got more stringent.. The bicycle on a narrow beam ('Fiets 'm er in', which translates to 'Cycle it in'*) is now a Red Bull event called 'Stalen Ros' (Steel Stallion: nick name for a bike) The Red Bull Flugtag is based on 'Vlieg er 's uit' which translates to 'Fly it out'* I advise you to search 'achteruitrijden' those are early 80's race where cars have to race backwards, they are fun too -this special race found it's origin in the fact DAF personal/luxury cars could go the same top speed forwards and backwards due to the transmission DAF developed (a CVT or Continuous Variable Transmission called the Variomatic -nicknamed 'het pientere pookje' translated : 'the smart stick') Volvo has used it in some designs when they bought the luxury car branch from DAF *= Good show, bad at titles

Ah yes, old-school Ter Land, Ter Zee en in de Lucht! Makes me feel nostalgic. There were some contestants who would become regulars, either by trying to be the fastest or build the most beautiful creation. I think there was a prize for fastest time and a prize for most beautiful or special creation. Every episode is in a different town, so it goes all over the Netherlands, and I think the first bit was in Belgium. The presenter is just one of the regular presenters of the Dutch public television. It seems to be a recap episode, because there's probably at least two decades of footage in this video. I was born in '95 and never saw the ice event, for example.
