This was just one day! The Battle Of Britain’s duration was from 10 July 1940 until 31 October 1940, which overlaps the period of large-scale night bombing attacks known as the Blitz, that lasted from 7 September 1940 to 11 May 1941.

The average age of a battle of britain pilot was 19. They flew from dawn until dusk, for week after week. We were not short of planes, we were short of pilots. They came from all the free world to fly for us. Many from Canada, Australia, South Africa, USA, many other countries. Many pilots had made the dangerous journey across occupied countries to come fly for us. 303 squadron was all Polish Pilots, they shot down way more german planes that any other squadron. We were not alone. It was a close run thing, at the height of the battle there were no spare planes to send up. Thank you for a great review

My mother is a survivor of the assault on London in the second world war and literally recalled running for her life. As soon as air raid sirens went off, my aunty Fran would coordinate the family and have them run down to the air raid shelter at the bottom of the garden (my aunty Joan carried on my uncle's back). My grandfather refused to give in and slept in the house. He survived the war, working on the British railways for 40 years.

The UK had been fighting the Germans for over 2 years before the USA decided to join us because of Pearl Harbour. The USA were obviously taken completely by surprise at Pearl Harbour 2 years into a global war. Our cities were also bombed on a daily basis and the Germans had the cheek to moan when we bombed their cities. Americans also thought our food was terrible at this time but we had very little to eat and had ration books for food whereas the USA had better food including chocolate etc. The USA also had better weapons than us but we did not give up. You should also watch a video on how the UK 'nuked' the USA twice as an excercise to see how good American air defences were. They did not learn their lesson after the first attempt and did exactly the same on the 2nd attempt.

WW1 = 1914-1918 WW2 = 1939-1945. We lost almost a million men from the UK and the Commonwealth in the first World War against Germany. I don't know the individual figures for each country for the second World War, but I watched a video recently that gave the total fatalities of the second World War, across the World, as 71 million. That number does not include those injured and maimed during the War nor did it take account of the grief and hardship suffered by the survivors. Sad facts. Thank you for reacting to this video. It gives us a bit of perspective on our lives today.

Those who came back from WW1 were still around, still being cared for when this went down - I can entirely appreciate that without the benefit of hindsight, that another war (with even deadlier weaponry) was not something anyone wanted to rush in to. I always felt for Chamberlain - he didn't want to commit another generation to that. Easy to say knowing what we know that it was futile to think peace was an option but those who care for a family member would likely agree that it isn't something one would wish upon the entire population, as much as we love them, if it were avoidable.

Edit: The jet engine didn't exist until a couple of years after this, towards the end of the war it was tested - it's essentially a product of the war. These lads were in propeller planes. For some context, my Grandfather was a Cavalry Officer here in Denmark - a horse, sabre [that I still have] and a pistol - against truly modern German army with machine guns and fighter planes. It was close to the technological difference that had allowed the British to establish an Empire.. Think about how many Tutsis were killed in just a few months down in Rwanda - with basically iron age tech (machete) and a few machine guns. Now consider that Germany and Britain were two nations with almost unlimited supplies of coal, vast steel industries and maybe 10% of the entire worlds weapon (gun, cannon, tanks and warships etc) production. Germany had and still has some of the the biggest and best weapons manufacturers on the planet. It's a bloody miracle anybody survived. The British hadn't been so much of an underdog since the Vikings arrived on their shores over a thousand years earlier. And they just took it with unfathomable spirit and tenacity.

@@_starfiend Still pretty much true - being in development and being ignored means that there weren't jet planes in use at the time and thus referring to the planes as jets is a misunderstanding. You're pedantically correct but kinda not the point being made either. Were you and I talking about it then I'd have written it differently but since we're dealing with the lesser informed - keeping it simple is somewhat the done thing.

Thanks to the Polish we knew how to break the Enigma Machine coded messages. We then (Alan Turin) created computers (massive things with vacuum tubes as there were no chips yet) to break them in a short amount of time. It was kept secret until the 1990's. Even people who worked on the site didn't know what they were doing because it was so compartmentalised. We knew what the Germans were doing before the Germans did. Without this we'd have been buggered. Thanks to all the people who fought the Germans and especially the Polish who cracked the code AND fought during the Battle of Britain. Great reaction both. loved it. Very emotional. x
@sirderam1
@sirderam1 Ай бұрын
The computer was built by Bill Tutte, a mathematician, and Percy Flowers, a Post Office engineer, not Alan Turing. It could not only break the Enigma code, it could also break the much more complex Lorenz code, which was used by the German High Command, including Hitler himself. The difference in complexity between the two can most easily be demonstrated by the fact that the most advanced Enigma machines used five rotors to scramble the letters, the Lorenz machines used twelve rotors. The secrecy was abandoned round about 1975 by which time more powerful computers were being produced commercially, so there was little point in maintaining the secret.

Since 1932 the Polish codebreakers Marian Rejewski, Henryk Zygalski & Jerzy Różycki worked within BS4 (the Polish general staff cipher Bureau focussed on German decryption & intelligence), and together with VITAL assistance given by the French intelligence officer Gustave Bertrand (who had cultivated a German informant codenamed "Asché" who had provided French Intelligence with tons of vital data including a full nazi procedural manual for use of the enigma encryption device), had by the purchase of a commercial version of the early enigma device and LOTS of analysis eventually broken into German army and air force 3 rotor encryption networks, this was a fantastic achievement, but it is true to say that they at no time did they crack German Kriegsmarine encryption due to the additional layers of security employed by the German navy. In December 1938 the nazis introduced a further 2 interchangeable encryption rotors to the enigma system, which immediately brought the vast majority of Polish decryption efforts to a grinding halt, which is where it remained up until the outbreak of WW2. In the weeks prior to the outbreak of WW2 the Polish research work was passed to the French, who in the six months they had it in their possession added little to the accumulated knowledge, and to the UK where the British government seized it with both hands, and made its study top priority. So was instigated the British "ULTRA" project. Jerzy Różycki elected to stay behind and work in Vichy France where, unknown to the Germans he worked on a seperate secret encryption system, which bore no tangible fruit before his death in 1942. Marian Rejewski & Henryk Zygalski were, for security reasons, not included in the UK "ULTRA" project, and so took no further part in British decryption efforts. The British "ULTRA" project took the non working foundation research of the Polish decrypters and from there MASSIVELY expanded that research to once again break into nazi 3 rotor enigma, this was followed in 1942 by the cracking of the improved kriegsmarine M4 enigma (the 4 rotor enigma device, codenamed "SHARK"), as well as simultaneously breaking into the FAR more complex "lorenz" cipher device used by the German army & navy high commands (TUNNY), before finally cracking the "Geheimschreiber" encryption device used by both the Luftwaffe high command as well as the top level of the nazi government (STURGEON), on top of these British achievements another product of the ULTRA program was the building of the world's first programmable electronic computer (COLOSSUS) to speed up the breaking of German codes. This was designed and built by a British team led by Alan Turing and the telephone engineer Tommy Flowers, which transformed British decryption from a process which often only gave results days or even weeks after the message was eavesdropped on by the British, to a state of affairs towards the end of WW2 where the British were reading a LOT of top level communications at the same time as the intended German recipient. The early Polish codebreakers did indeed provide the "acorn" from which the British cultivated the "mighty oak" of ULTRA.

Germany made a tactical blunder to even consider Operation Sealion (land invasion of UK) and wasted resources they could not afford. Even if Germany had gained Air Superiority over Britain the Royal Navy was intact and would have repelled a land invasion. While civilians in Britain suffered, they actually played a significant part in bleeding Germany dry.

There was suppose to be a treaty that no Cities were to be bombed, then 1 night a german bomber missed his target and hit a church so Britain retaliated by flattening Hamburg in germany probably knowing it would infuriate Hitler which it did. Hitler then took his attention off the Air bases and focused it on the British cities which probably lost him the war. America was a very small player in the world back then with a very small un trained Army, They only stepped on the world stage after the war. If Britain didnt win that battle the world would be a very different place and the people and cultures we know today wouldnt be here, thats for sure.

You look tired mate and you're not even in the war 😂 Why has the sound gone off? We can't hear you or anything at all. At the end of the day Spain tried to invade us, they sent 130 ships they failed, Britain won. We had WW1 .. we won. WW2, every european country defeated but not Britain. Thanks for reacting to this x
