I had the chance to see "Kristina" in Stockholm in 1999. It was breathtaking, hearing Helen Sjöholm, Peter Jöback and the other fantastic singers at the Stockholm "Circus". Kristina is more an opera than a musical. Even without understanding the lyrics, it was one of the best musical moments in my life.

I mean no disrespect at all, but as a musical performer myself "kristina från Duvemåla" is far from an opera and it is very much a musical. In opera there is no dialogue at all, there is plenty of dialogue in Kristina. And the singing techniques differs greatly. I hope that helps. I saw the show 3 times in Sweden.. masterpiece.

Helen was brought up with the heritage of Swedish Folkmusic, just like I also was.. Her Mother sang in the same choir as my parents for decades !! Helens control and voice is something else :D // I believe Björn and Benny wrote this song especially for her to sing. it`s from a Great Drama, telling us about the hardships so many emigrants experienced when leaving Sweden for America during some horrific famine years.. like 1/3 of the Swedish population did between 1850-1920 ..

Thanks for sharing the behind story of Helen. When my family made a visit to Sweden last summer, I had several chances to talk to people there and mentioned her name, but most ones didn't figure out her name. Her family name of 'Sjoholm' wasn't delivered well when I pronounced it. It was very difficult to pronounce some Swedish. I think the American drama of 'Fargo' did well show the real lives of immigrants from northern European countries. Cheers 🍻

Yet another very pleasant reaction from you!!! Its alwayssuch a pleasure seeng the whole family...and this time also a an extra friend reaction together! About this song: Well, I cant hear this song without crying abit. Helene Sjöholms powerful expression which really bring this song so much to life! Over 20% of the Swedish population left for America during the late 1800...to find a new life and away from extreme poverty in Sweden ( even my own ancestors). Some came back - some didnt. During the 1800- 1900 Sweden were hit year after year after year by bad crops - Nothing were growing which made the Swedes starving and become one of the poorest countries in Europe. Stories were told about America...and the possibilities of becoming rich and finding gold. Some stayed and builded a new life there . And yet today there are many.many Andersson, Carlsson,Jonsson ,Svensson ,Eriksson and Olsson all over USA and Canada. Especially in the Chicago , Massachusetts and Minnesota areas (which are told to be similar to Sweden). Sometime when you have time and want. Pls Check out a fairly new Swedish star called "Elize Ryd" . Songs like Crystalline, Stjärnan i min hand (The Star in my hand) = A Christmas song and Endlessly. I really like this singer. Her voice is like smooth silk

Thanks a lot for your kind and interesting words here. 👍 I can see lots of Swedes love this musical, including my family. There are many people here who find and admire this musical. I watched a movie called Fargo by the Cohen brothers, which got the best Academy one. I also enjoyed the same TV drama in which many northern European descendants were showing up. It was so impressive 👏. Thanks again. 😊

Both songs were indeed written by Björn and Benny of ABBA. The narrator voice at the beginning of the video is Björn, telling us the prequel to the lyrics.

To Happy Hawaii Thanks a lot for sharing your nice memory here. To confess the truth, I don't exactly know the difference between opera and musical still now. 'Mamamia' would be the first and last musical that I've attended so far, and I still have a boring memory of opera, probably around 1990, during which I was almost struggling not to sleep. That might be the main reason why my date didn't go well at that time😂. As you mentioned here, a good song or musical shines by itself, not even understanding the lyrics. Thank you!!

Simple answer: In Opera, everybody (or at least the lovers) dies at the end. If you're not bawling your eyes out during the final note, they didn't do it right. Musicals and Operettes have a license to be merrier and can even have happy endings. They don't always, as this one attests to.
