The Dutch tend to feel a bit different about their colonial past because it was a bit of a mixed bag, because there is a general sense of progress over the ages, we know people are fallible, mean and hypocrite, also in the past. But we also feel we were the underdog, threatened by the much bigger powers of Spain, France, Portugal, Germans, Britain, sometimes a few of them attacking together. We only fought defensive wars in Europe, and we started colonial exploitation for the defensive war against Spain and Portugal too. Also it can't be seen seperately from the Dutch Golden Age allthough it was not what made it golden. That was fair European trade, and the Dutch Republic was so much better than almost all that had come before in Europe. The origin of modern capitalism, the beginning of religious tolerance, freedom of print, the heart of the early scientific revolution, equality and upward social mobility, the emergence of the citizen, art about and for normal people, discovery and exploration of places far away. It's very hard to make that era all about colonial exploitation and slavery, which did happen too. An interesting British video on Dutch 17th century, the Dutch Golden Age is actually from the 1570's to 1672, is titled "Ships of the Dutch Golden Age, and is not really about the ships. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJCbo6tmo8ZqhM0

I heard nothing about the atrocities we committed against the native people in 'the East' (now known as Indonesia). It wasn't until I had a history teacher of Indonesian descent who tried telling us how colonialism was experienced from the natives' point of view. I'm so sorry, this video is just full of factual errors, like we never had a King William (or Willem) IV, especially since not at that time mentioned in the video, besides that I think they showed a portrait of Mozart there, but in the 1800s we had 3 kings, Willem I through III. We did have a king William III, in the late 17th century, but he ruled as King over England, Scotland and Ireland. Well you know the guy, who invaded England and took the throne and even when he ruled over a couple of provinces of what we now call the Netherlands, he wasn't the King here, but Stadtholder. Though he was related to our current royal family. Then that there are 19 million people living in the Netherlands, is false also, according to wikipedia in 2020, we had about 17.3 million people living here, and that is the entire Netherlands, so also the part in the Caribbean. But enough with this rant, there are more factual errors, but I don't want to make the story too long. About your question though, I am proud of our history, even when we were not angels, we were big in trade, but that also means we were huge slave traders, not a thing to be proud of and we were not just traders, we were real colonizers and were not nice to the original citizens who lived there. Most likely the biggest reason why they wanted to gain independence. But it's also something that was normal at that time, there were also crusades in the history, not something to be proud of, but it still happened. I also dislike that we lost our biggest companies, or they have grown a lot smaller. But we are a real superpower in the world, we were it back them during our golden age, and I think today too, just wish we would be part of G8, but there was a time, where we might have been the most powerful nation in the world, and being such a small country makes me proud that we can still be a world player. But yeah, slavery is a bad thing and I'm not proud of that past and some other things, but that doesn't mean you can't be proud of your country anymore.

Yes, we can be proud of the Netherlands and all of the achievements in time. But we should never forget that we are the luckiest people in the world to have been born in a country with these perfect climate conditions and situated shore sided next to the UK, Germany and France. Because being a small country, we had to outsmart the bigger and stronger neighbours seeking collaboration and mutual interests. Not fighting the seas, but adapting to the seas. Meanwhile keeping an open mind to different cultures and believes. Expanding creativity not only in Arts and Rational science, but also in sports. Being a competitive nation, the Netherlands with its small population also achieved much in sports worldwide. Soccer, iceskating, cycling, martial arts and not in the least we have Max Verstappen in Formula 1 GP. Yes, we are a proud nation. Actually not. Colonization was about trade for the Dutch, they mostly only controlled the seas and trading posts, and in the greater scheme of things you can't say the Dutch traded many slaves. Too many of course, but with 12 million in the Atlantic slave trade and 19 million in the Arab slave trade, the Dutch 600.000 slaves are only a small number. Especially compared the Dutch share of all the other trade, which was huge. Only around the year 1800 the British took over as the world's biggest trader.

It was the beginning of hypocrisy and double standards for foreign policy. The merchant vs the preacher man as the dilemma is still called, and the merchant won. So they already knew it was wrong, but still did it. That makes it a stain on our history, but let's face, the history of all people of the continents on the recieving end or the beginning of slavery are stained too. All history is stained. That only changed in the late 19th century when a lot of waterworks were done to improve Rotterdam's connection to the sea and to the Rhine and Meuse. World trade was also mostly European trade still, that was far bigger. The Dutch went out into the Far East to fight Spain and Portugal, the British went into the Far East because they couldn't compete with the Dutch in the far bigger and free European trade, but could make a buck in the high risk high reward colonial trade. This whole "Dutch East India Company" was of great cultural and geopolitical importance but hardly of economical importance to the Dutch.

Sorry? Holland wiped out the inhabitants of one complete island to get monopoly on one of the spices. What do you mean "more sensible "?

Again and again : the internet-historians on world-history seem to have the urge to comment on matters of history. Nowerdays the area of wokeness. (as je het hebt over populisme is dat het wel )

That was normal in those days. Don’t put nowadays moral on historical happenings. If you do, every country is in the wrong. We Dutch don’t blame the Germans today for what happened 80years ago, so I don’t blame anyone for what happened 400 years ago. If so, we could blame the Spanish for killing our countrymen, or Austria for doing the same, or the English, or the Romans, or the Vikings or, well everyone. We live in the here and now, according to nowadays morals. They lived in historical times according to the morals of those days.

What island was that, Banda? Because although a massacre took place, not all inhabitants were killed. So if you were referring to that island, please stick to the facts

You can’t change history so the things this country did in a far past cannot be undone. The country profited a lot from the colonies and these, still quite poor, countries need compensation in my opinion. The Netherlands can be proud on what it, as a very small country, achieved on watermanagement, agriculture etc. that are essential worldwide.

4:38 Yes I am proud of it, it has made our country what it is today. And the ones whimpering about it have never plucked a bol of cotton, neither have I had any slaves. But these whimperers have worked sooooo hard in the 1500;s that today in 2024 they still are too tired to work...

Not really. The Indonesians are far better of being being colonized by the Dutch in stead of the Spanish or the Portuguese. Indonesia will be a world power around 2100.
