Indo Lankan relations will flourish the moment India stops looking at Sri Lanka through the prism of " Tamils" Historically North India and the Sinhalese have had a long and strong relationshipespecially under the Mauryans. Sri Lanka was known as Sinhala or Sinhala Dvipa (Island of the Sinhalas). The Sinhalas are mentioned in the Mahabharata as well. The biggest mistake India did was arm, train and fund the Tamil Tigers and side with the Tamils. As a result there is a suspicion that is hard to wipe away. It's like Pakistan arming, training and funding Jihadis in India. As long as India maintains its relationship with Sri Lanka through the prism of Tamils, Indo-Lankan relations will never reach their full potential. This is what pushed Sri Lanka into the arms of China. During the war in Sri Lanka, India refused to sell offensive weapons to Sri Lanka because of Tamils. India continues to harangue Sri Lanka over ' human rights' because of Tamils. India voted against Sri Lanka at the United Nations because of Tamils. The Tamils already have a homeland that is twice the size of Sri Lanka called Tamil Nadu, home to more than 60 million Tamils. They are fine, and the Tamil language and culture is flourishing. Tamil politicians will continue to attack Sri Lanka just like they carry out hate campaigns against North Indians, Hindi, Brahmins because of their Dravidian ideology. Their latest program is to claim that " Tamils are not Hindu." Pandering to Tamil politicians is a recipe for disaster. It is time India jettison the'Tamil baggage'and enter into a full economic, political and military relationship with Sri Lanka. Hoping the BJP government takes a different line that all the Congress governments of the past.
