I remember my mother would play this song over and over and cry while my dad was gone to Vietnam war. It was a bad time in our lives. But at least he came back he was really messed up killing people that you dont even know that has done nothing to you is hard on the soul.. It took him years to tell me about all the killing in them jungles. I was horrified at some the stuff he did just to stay alive . Then to come back to United States to get spit on. Ian Gillan's vocals are certainly a force of nature. Besides being the lead vocalist for Deep Purple, he also sang the title role in the original 1970 London cast of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Love you girls experiencing the music I grew up with! I'm so glad you picked this 1970 live version. It's my favourite, way above the album version (though that's also great). I've heard that back in the day, TV audiences were instructed not to react much until the end of the songs when on camera. Though here I suppose they were all moved to stunned silence and tears, as I was when I first heard it. In 1970 there was not only the horrible Vietnam War (which singer Ian Gillan composed this in protest against) but among many other sad things the Kent State Massacre, where the Ohio National Guard fired into a group of unarmed students in a peaceful anti-war demonstration, tragically wounding dozens and killing four: three demonstrators and one passerby who was just walking to class when a stray bullet hit. 😢 This song also makes me think of that. It's a timeless classic that is sadly relevant to every war or crazed shooting incident ever. The album version may not have been released as a single, or it didn't get much air play due to it's length. Slow buildups and beat changes/ progressions were very common at the time. They felt like chapters in a narrative. Songs had time to breath and take listeners along on the journey. I miss that in today's Pop/Rock music! I've heard that Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were considered the founders of Heavy Metal, but maybe you knew that already. Thanks for a great review! 👏😁 I've liked and subbed! Thanks, great reaction as usual 🥰 A few years after this album, the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, formed Rainbow with Dio. You did an epic reaction to them. A few years later, Ronnie joins Black Sabbath for the first time, more reactions. A few years later, the singer Ian Gillan, replaces Dio in Sabbath, releasing one but great album. Maybe a future reaction? 😉🤘🤘

Great job on this classic! :) I've liked this song since I was a young teenager when it came out about 100 years ago, haha! This is from back in the days when people could sing (not just growl) and could play their instruments very well, and there was no studio overproduction, and songwriting was still original and not written by focus group made rules..

Just a few seconds in to "Child in Time" this 63 year young Aussie, has a question for you young ladies,. If you were in the audience of this gig, would you have been able to sit still like a statue, showing no emotion.?? As that audience were told to by the producers.. I would not have been able to sit still, security would have had to drag me out kicking & singing along. As this video was made years after the album was released.. 🤟🤘🤙 All the best from 🇦🇺🦘
