This video aimed at A-level students, describes the reaction that takes place between [Cu(H2O)6]2+ and aqueous sodium hydroxide and explains how to write an ionic equation for this reaction. It also describes the reactions that take place between [Cu(H2O)6]2+ and ammonia solution and [Cu(OH)2(H2O)4] and ammonia solution and discusses how to write ionic equations for these reactions. Finally the idea of ligand exchange is explained and how this can lead to a change in coordination number as exemplified by the reactions of [Cu(H2O)6]2+ and [Co(H2O)6]2+ with concentrated HCl.
