My great grandfather was a major in the German Army in WW1. He talked about it. The one I remember the most. He said he gave orders "do NOT fire on Christmas day" to his men. As he said, it was the only orders he ever gave. That he didn't regret.

Germans like your grandfather are the ones I feel bad for. They were given zero choice, unlike the ss or the regular Nazis in ww2 that literally chose it. What a lot of people don’t realize is that a good amount of the force was just normal troops following orders like any soldier is supposed to, they didn’t have the same ideology that Germany in that time was known for in the leadership

I was a soldier, US Army, 101st Airborne. I spent Christmas and my 26th Birthday (22nd December) away from home in Afghanistan in 2018. This song strikes a particular chord in my heart. I celebrated Christmas, not with relatives, my wife or daughter, or in a home safe and sound. Like many of my brothers and sisters, we celebrated together, a family bound in war, forged by service. Away from home and safety, we held each other, laughed, joked, sang some carols and had a tree where we gave each other presents and hoped to return home soon after already being deployed for 6 months. We threw snowballs at each other and we were kids again... If even for a moment. And as quickly as it came, it passed and it was back to our war. This song makes me weep. Not only for my Christmas, but so many Christmases passed in history where young men spent it in foxholes in the mud, the guts and the blood in foreign lands, fighting a war that, for many, we didn't understand but knew had to be done, and had to be won. And through that suffering, in these moments of joy, we found a little bit of peace in a war that seemed to never end for us...
@cheezkid2689 Жыл бұрын
The song still brings me to tears to this day. I cry for the men and women who laid down their lives in the pointless, meaningless wars we fight, for those who were laid to rest but never remembered. It's the only song that makes me cry. No other song has ever brought me to tears but this one.

there was a letter a british soldier wrote on dec 25th to his fiance, telling of this. he told her that he is thankful for the princess anne's christmas-gift (the soldiers were gifted pipes) but utterly bedazzled by what's in it, being german tobacco gifted to him, as a christmas-present, by a german soldier. (i don't remember anymore what he gifted in return, but it was something equally valuable in the trenches.) Folks say sabaton glorifies war or even the nazis. that's bull. stories like this and "no bullets fly" are a testament to humanity and we all should think about it from time to time.

Never gave Sabaton a thought until my son's friend had to come live with us. He loves them. Trying to find some Christmas music for my playlist this year he recommended this. Fell in love on the first note. Hard to find good original Christmas songs nowadays, that aren't comedic. Even though I didn't see action having been in the navy I feel a connection to this others may not. If EVER a song was written that truly captures the Christmas spirit this is it.

I've seen all of these reactions videos individually and noticed with a lot of them when Hannes climbs over the trench they either go very still, their eyes widen, hold their breath or a mix of those. The smiles, and the joy that they get when we see the soldiers playing Fußball in no-mans-land. Then when Hannes is thinking about the fighting, before the refrain of the chorus, you can see everyone starting to get very reflective over the horrors of the trenches just before that bitter-sweet gut punch of emotion of "We were all friends" no longer "We are all friends". I do think that Floor's Aria at the end is the most important part of the viewing experience as it gives the viewer that time to be introspective on the power of peace and the horrors of war.

Honestly, this event was probably _the_ most powerful spontaneous single thing to ever occur in the history of our entire species. Sadly those in Command didn't see it that way, and the next day ordered the artillery to open fire or face a firing squad. The next year it was attempted again, but this time those in Command were ready for it and once again threatened to shoot anyone who tried. So it never had a repeat, though both sides the regular soldiers desperately wanted it. Goes to show war isn't fought between young men that truly hate each other. War is fought on _behalf_ of those few in power that hate each other, whilst they sit safe and sound far behind the front lines never getting their hands dirty and most all the way back in their own countries able to go to sleep in their own beds at night. This world would be a _very_ different place if those in power that want to start wars were forced to actually fight in them - even more so if _only_ they were forced to fight each other hand-to-hand to the death. I highly doubt many would start wars in the first place, if this were the case. They're far too soft and comfortable in their own lives to be willing to risk it personally.

This is the song that must be on mandatory rotation all December. Louder every year. In places that don't want it. In high official places. Outside churches. Until everyone is singing it. Who would start a war if they knew it would stop dead on December 25 and all those who didn't respect a truce were driven out of office & power & fancy war profiteer homes?
@merryrose6788 Жыл бұрын
Yes! Great idea! Maybe if we also play Majestica's A Christmas Carol too. The message of Dickens' work is that we must live Christmas everyday. Everyday, Peace on Earth and Goodwill to All. That means no wars at all. A pleasant thought. Of course we can keep in mind that there will always be threats, someone getting to big for their britches. Laws are made for that. Blowing up each other and terrorizing kids, that's not the answer, and those not respecting the truce are as you aptly wrote: "driven out of power and fancy war profiteer homes."

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays my friends! Let’s all have a truce for Christmas from now on! No matter who you are What your religion is Your skin color Your country’s leaders Your nationality Whether you’re poor or rich Your sexuality It doesn’t matter now that we are all friends! We are brothers! We need to unite! *Amazing mashup btw, I was really blown away by it my friend! ^^*

A permanent Christmas Truce has my vote. It's really the only option left for humanity. We've tried war for thousands of years, and it's just not worth it.

i think this song really shows how u can share the epics and tragedies of history through song. u wanna smile at the fact that these rivals of war are celebrating Christmas together, yet at the same time u wanna cry, knowing that these men will be ordered to kill the very men they became friends with. im very happy Sabaton was able to tell these men's stories in such a beautiful and respectful way.
