French here! I love your videos so much, it's very interesting to watch Orelsan (and other pieces of French culture) from your own perspective. I believe he's actually pretty liked here, he's a true artist and raps like a prophet. I still remember exactly the first time I listened to L'odeur de l'Essence: I could feel my throat thightening, almost suffocating with every word, chest hurting. On another note, I would gladly recommend you "La Quête" and "Jour meilleur" from him, the first one talks about his private life and the second is like a balm on a broken heart :) Merci pour ces belles reviews!

Thank you for this reaction. Orelsan has been my favorite rapper for 10 years now, what we like about him is that we have been able to grow and evolve at the same time as him through his albums, and this song is in my opinion one of his best, which clearly exposes the new malaise of our society in the world for people who are or are almost thirty. He is as usual very fair, simply gives truths, without diversions, and that's why we love him.

I really appreciate your videos and the fact that you go out of your way to share foreign content with an English-speaking audience. I think what sets Orelsan apart from a lot of other rappers is that his lyrics are extremely well written and describe very accurately what's going on in our society. However, not all his lyrics have a political or societal aim. For something a little lighter but nonetheless very touching, I invite you to listen to “La Quête”.

Met him once will working on the backstage. He's the nicest and chill human being I met in the music world. I think he's just a mindful guy far away from the blingbling. He's been hated early in his careers because he used to play characters on early songs and made that song called "sale p**e" of a guy disappointed by his wife cheating on him and ready to off himself or her. Apart from the people already knowing his work and his style, the whole french television who just discovered him called him machist misogynistic etc etc... But then he had various other albums and most of em were instant number one.

Hi D!

He really raps what he thinks without worrying about the repercussions, it's a song that is related to "social suicide". As we say in French : "Il n'y a que la vérité qui blesse" = Only the truth hurts" I don't like rap in general but the lyrics of some rappers are true, virulent and reflect the reality of our current society regardless of the country. We are all in the same boat. Too bad it's the Titanic

Thank you for paying attention to what countries out there produce wich is simply being open minded. That said, I think that calling Orelsan punch lines are "the truth" as you said about "Suicide Social" and this title is just a misunderstanding of his posture. Many of his punchlines are to be considered under a sarcastic point of view. As you said about Suicide Social, it is a laundry list. To be taken just like it comes out the social media : rough and raw, true and false. Moreover, in Suicide Social, the story is being told by a guy who is about to give himself death. A desperado, literally. Someone who opens the gates to his despair, anger and eventually hatred. And many misunderstood that and took his talent to drop killer punchlines as if they were the foundation of a common sense philosophy. I think it is the fair and meanwhile the opposite. Yourself stressed this idea : no one is trying to listen nor understand but all want to express themselves. In the name of the common sense. This so called right for everyone to claim cleverness. But first of all : are most us clever? Idoubt it. Isn't "common sense" just you very first reaction to a random event when you are angry or drunk. Or with a bunch of angry and drunk fellas? This second way of understanding, a underneath grid of reading Orelsan lyrics makes all of his talent. My opinion ofc.

Like you, I think we've reached a turning point in our history. In the 80s, after the oil crisis, we already thought the system was going to collapse, but the states managed to keep the banks in place by injecting money everywhere. Except that today, after the crises of 2008 and 2020, we're paying the price for keeping our economic system on life support. The climate and social crises are adding to the burden. Days may not be any better in the future, but we'll be teaching the next generations a lesson: the 1% will never win.
