Some time ago around the year 2000’s until 2010’s, in Malaysia, there was this era of multiple genres that were viral and had really high demands in Malaysian market. Some of the genres are; 1. Malaysian Ballads (as usual), 2. Malaysian Pop Rock, 3. Irama Malaysia (Malaysian traditional contemporary music) 4. Nasheed (Basically Islamic-based music) No.1 and No.3 were booming like crazy especially because many songs from these genres were famous because the singer was Siti Nurhaliza. There were a lot great singers who were just as amazing as Siti Nurhaliza in these 2 genres, but the aura from Siti was the most powerful at that time. No.2 was still on the rise at that time and most fans and supporters came from the younger generations. No.4 was a surprising one. Malaysia has never seen such a big wave of Nasheed groups and songs were released and played so many times during those years and this genre called ‘Nasheed’ was such a high demand that they even had their own exclusive music awards specialized just for Nasheed songs. The most famous Nasheed groups that brought up the standards of Islamic-based music into a National Phenomona are the RABBANI, RAIHAN, and HIJJAZ. These succesfull pioneer groups released songs that are mostly calming, enchanting, and full of advices, had managed to make this genre to be performed live on the same stage with other music genres during the annual ‘Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL)’ events. The next apprentices of Nasheed groups who also became successful in Malaysian music industry among them are the IN-TEAM, UNIC, and few others including solo Nasheed singers such as MAWI (male singer) and WAHEEDA (female singer). You see, here in Malaysia, in the year 2000’s until 2010’s, even female singer who wears the hijab and fully covered her entire body with humble clothings managed to become the FIRST FEMALE ARTIST WITH HIJAB TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL AS A SINGER & ACTRESS IN MALAYSIA. Waheeda (now no longer continued her career as a singer or actress), had some backlashes and hate comments from the Malaysian Entertainment Industry just because she refused to remove her hijab and proved the whole country that anyone, especially Muslim girls who wear hijabs and practice Islam can do and be whatever they want without having to remove their hijabs or expose parts or shapes of their body in order to be accepted and become successful in the Entertainment Industry or any industries at all. She was among the pioneers of women who showed Malaysia that women are as capable as men in any working fields. In Malaysian values, I don’t think that most Malaysians believe that women should be seen as ‘EQUAL’ to men. I think that most Malaysians (especially nowadays) see women as complimentary to men while both genders are being treated equally without discriminations when applying for jobs or university applications, in any industries. All the differences of genders, racial backgrounds, religions and cultures are the diversity in any working industries to grow and develop further to become successful. The diversity of Malaysia is what making this country what it is today.
