Also super interesting how cubism and the imagery of a museum is brought up by Jason and Kevin given how Namjoon conceptualised this album as having very strong connections to visual art as well. Like he performed Change pt 2 at Dia Beacon surrounded by the Dan Flavin exhibit where the green fixtures are supposed to evoke a sense space shrinking

Hard agree! I have a hard time listening to just ONE song off of this album... the whole thing flows so beautifully that I'll be halfway through before I even realize I went past that "one" song I meant to listen to. And Change Pt. 2... it feels... painful? to me, like there are some really difficult emotions tangled up in it, and yet my ears CRAVE that funky bass.

I love that we saw so much of the producer duo here, as RM has been very clear about the importance of eAeon's unique production. In his Zach Sang interview, RM said he feels he's a better lyricist than producer, and he's also talked about how much he's enjoying collaborating with his friends and people he admires at the moment. This song is such a perfect example of how that can work - capturing his raw emotion, compressed into his words and delivery, and then trusting someone whose work he loves to amplify that. It's amazing! Basically, I love that RM is at this stage. He's choosing what he wants to do and where he wants to put his energy, and it's leading to really exciting and unconventional music. I think the trend in kpop towards more self-producing groups is great overall, but I hope songs like this can also show the special magic of collaboration - and that not forcing yourself to do everything doesn't make you any less of an artist.

Comparing change pt2 to cubism is so interesting and does make sense. Just like Jason said, RM not only actually changed the aural music, but also interpreted ‘change’, the concept itself, from different perspectives. Thanks Jason for providing such unique way to listen this song!!!😊 I find that he and RM are all obsessed with art, including painting, music, and even literature. I’m so excited on his solo project!!!❤

omg, the james joyce reference!!! yes, namjoon does use a lot of stream of consciousness which i think is one of the most interesting characteristics of his lyricism, i would lot to take a class solely on his songs as literary works

Of course this did not disappoint. This song grabbed me by every part on first listen, all visceral. But here you all are able to dissect and analyze it with intelligent and eloquent terms, a uniquely gratifying experience. The background of its origin really is (to me) critical to its expression and appeal, and you all got that. My only point of disagreement comes of Jason’s beautiful laid out depiction of listening to it as potentially complete in one event. But for my part, I keep going back to it, drawn to purely enjoying the music and all of the weightiness of all that it carries. Bravo

I really enjoy the way Jason can pull in artist references outside of just music to connect to reactions like this. Art is rarely created in a vacuum, but all throughout history has been intertwined with the art, political philosophy, religious philosophy, current events, etc of its time (or if it’s not of the current time, it’s usually looking back to some other specific time and context). It’s cool to see some of those links more directly spelled out to help give additional context.

This song threw me for a loop when it came on. I was expecting something along the lines of Change feat Wale but what we got was so amazing. The way it flows from one instrument and style of music to another is done seamlessly (not in any way a music/ production expert, I just love music) and the songs it sits between makes its placement in the album perfect. Honestly, this is my second favorite song on the album and I wanted more but it's truly perfect the way it is. ...now I can watch the reaction. Had to get all of that out first.

Interesting factoid... even though RM says Pt. 2 isn't really related to the original Change he recorded with Wale, that piano that goes all drunken and crunchy in the middle? That's lifted *directly* from the backing piano in Change.

Yes yes yes and yes to everything! I also would have agreed with the last point upon my first few listens! But interestingly it turned out to be the song with the most replay value personally which was, really unexpected! It appears quite choatic and i was really taken aback but the more i listened to it I actually think that first the message is worded very concisely, super impactful and the repeated "things change people change everything change" is really catchy and it's overall so easy to sing along to!!! (Which i didn't envision in the first place) And sonically what used to sound all over the place, i realized that each ideas and sections are stated very clearly, we go from saturated to desatured, the disonance, unsteadiness calls for inevitable constant change and i think sums up perfectly this idea of us humans always working towards change but also hating change and ending up finding consistency in the uneasiness of the inevitability of change! Anyways i love this song so much

I had the same mix of surprise and interest on my first listen to this song. I also thought it would be an experience that passed by rather than becoming a favourite. But I found as I listened to the album through a number of times that with familiarity it became one of my most enjoyed songs. I think it parallels to life experience where unfamiliar things jar but can often end up fitting into our world view with familiarity. When I began to get into kpop it seemed so exotic and strange with the beauty standards, feminine clothes and make up for men and the structure of the songs with their mixture of rap and gentle melodies (my culture mostly lauded very masculine men with a "harden up" ethic). Now when I recommend a song to someone I am sometimes surprised at their reaction and that they are not open-minded about the music. My long winded way of saying that it benefits us all to be open-minded to new cultural experiences and thinking about things from different viewpoints (Braque et al). It can help to temper the fear reaction we have that prompts hate. We don't have to like everything new we experience but it can help to know why we don't. At least we gave it a shot. Absolutely love Jason's thoughts. Thanks so much for all these reactions! Anyways, as a change coordinator in real life, this song might usurp Bowie's Changes as my new anthem 😄

this channel's reactions are the only ones that count! cause it doesn't feel like you're "judging" the song but more like you're trying to understand it and piece it together, getting a meaning out of it (if there is). since i know nothing about music and usually don't put too much thought into it, I'm glad I can get to a deeper level with songs I otherwise would listen to attentively once and then just casually

I think it was RM that said that, of all the songs on his album, it was THIS song that other musicians tended to like the most; Whereas non-musicians tended towards other songs on the album. I really really think that's true, like... circumstances took practicing and composing music away from me, but I still very much identify as a musician, and IMMEDIATELY when I heard this one, it was my favourite. You really can't place it even if you know how to break the song down into its parts, because SOMETHING about this really does just speak to other musicians. Like a secret language we all know but we don't KNOW we know. All of my non-musician friends hear the dissonance and instead of getting excited like I did, they call it "noise". XD
