I'm under the feeling that most of these people's reactions are quite undertoned and couldn't fully compare to that of the people of 1979 who must've had a very different mindset and also a different way of life altogether compared to nowadays though. Things were very different, and so might've been the intensity of people's reactions to those sorts of things. But it's still quite a delight to see people of today's time react in a similar fashion to what people of the time before reacted first, and see that not much else has changed in that regard.

My dad took me to see Alien when it came out; mom took a hard pass. I was thirteen, and we went probably second weekend, maybe Friday night. The house was packed solid. This was at The Parkway Theater in Oakland, California. I'd never seen so many people yelling things at the screen, popcorn flying at the jump scares, empty bottles rolling under the seats, wafting pot smoke. Totally different movie-going experience from Star Wars two years before over in San Francisco. The Star Wars audience was quiet, rapt in awe for the most part.

This is one scene that gets worse and worse the more you think about it. Outside of the visceral horror of seeing something explode out of someone's stomach, you start to think... Kane was choking because the newly-hatched fetus was blocking his ability to breathe, and he started going into a seizure because the creature was eating its way out of his body. The actual "birth" of the thing probably felt like a relief compared to what else was going on inside Kane's body.

Statistically its impossible that none of them know it or haven't seen it parodied so much they know what is coming. But welcome to the dark secret of the react content industry. Most "first time" reactions are fake. They saw it before or they prepared by watching/reading about the main parts so they know what to focus on and get a nice camera friendly, thumbnail ready reaction prepared for when it comes up. But they pretend its all new for the camera. Because it gets more views. The whole thing is a performance.

You know, a lot of people complain about Veronica Cartwright performance in this film. They find her annoying, and way over the top. Frankly, for me, I think her performance was outstanding. She did a very realistic job of conveying the horror and fear that most of us would actually feel in real life. Think about it. When the chest burster comes out, she says “oh my God “, in in her voice, you can feel the utter shock, and absolute terror from that moment. She screams several times during the film. And while most people think she’s way over the top and annoying, I think she’s a fantastic actress and is way underrated. As a child actress, she was in a twilight zone. I never realized that as a child actress she was that good. If anybody gets to watch that twilight zone episode, which I forgot the title of it, you will see how fantastic and actress, even as a little kid that she was.

Not true. It's in the script, which everyone involved had read. Everyone knew. What they didnt know was how much blood thered be, or that they'd all get splattered. There is no way the shot could be filmed without the whole cast knowing. Not only is it in the script, they all were aware of the false chest because they watched John Hurt stick his head theough the hole in the table. You need to look up the word "fact". You also need to learn something about filmmaking, and how to calibrate your instant built in horseshit detector.

I believe that when his chest burst for the first time and nothing happened (no alien), that was a mistake but it was kept in (rightfully so). Also when John Hurt is convulsing the cast thought he wasn’t acting, that’s why the acting looked so natural especially from Yaphet Kotto and Tom Skerritt, they weren’t acting at first but genuinely concerned. They kept that part in the final cut and the rest of the scene was great acting. Lastly the blood flew further than expected and it hit Cartwright in the face and her response was genuine.

its so interesting that this scene has been memed to hell and back for the past 40 years, literally redefined the genre, and yet so many people still have no idea what's coming. its like trying to avoid knowing "i am your father" id thought it be impossible at this point

Most of the reactions are bs for content. But some of the younger reactors really have no clue about some of the established pop culture from years past. I’m 42 years old and I didn’t watch Scarface or The Godfather until I was in my 20s.

Even 45 years later, John Hurt's performance is still amazing in this scene, seeing peoples reactions to it, even now, is just amazing. It's also amazing that this scene is prempted in the derelict ship when they see the dead space jockey with a hole in his chest.

I LOVED watching this. Only when I saw the original in the theater in 1979 there was so much screaming when the creature popped out that it was DEAFENING, in fact I've never heard so much screaming at a movie than in "Alien." But only one woman screamed here. Best line of all: "It looked like a cock with a grille." Hilarious.

My first reaction was total shock and horror! Learned later that none of the actors knew what was going to happen, so you get that same horrified, confused look on everybody's face, the perfect take! Remember also when Ash said, "Don't touch it!" I immediately distrusted him, programmed to do nothing but save the alien and return it for study - crew be damned. Should've killed it and unplugged Ash! Moral of the story, DON'T TAKE A WEYLAND-YUTANI CONTRACT!

Dan O'Bannon, the scriptwriter, apparently came up with this as an inventive way to explain how the alien got aboard the ship - but what makes it kinda sad is that that he was also inspired by his experiences with Crohn's disease, a very painful autoimmune condition that mainly affects the intestines.
@Bluesit32
@Bluesit32 2 ай бұрын
As someone who has experienced symptoms like Crohn's disease...it isn't quite THAT intense. I've started sweating profusely from the pain, curling up in a ball, and even passing out. I have never thrashed and screamed like that. ...the parasitic monster was also different.

THing was at the time, having a traditional family dinner at the same table every day was far more common and considered sacred in a sense. Thats why they had the previous scene with them all at the table eating, not only did it establish everyones characters and rapport with each other and as a group, but it seeded that mental association with family dinner. Which setup everyone for the horror of this scene.

Because I was so young when this movie came out, I read the novelization first. So I never got to experience the shock of seeing this scene blind in a theatre...which I oddly regret. It's disturbing on so many levels. PS: You can tell a few of these reactors had either already seen this or knew enough of what was coming as to not be truly surprised or horrified.
