I'm under the feeling that most of these people's reactions are quite undertoned and couldn't fully compare to that of the people of 1979 who must've had a very different mindset and also a different way of life altogether compared to nowadays though. Things were very different, and so might've been the intensity of people's reactions to those sorts of things. This is one scene that gets worse and worse the more you think about it. Outside of the visceral horror of seeing something explode out of someone's stomach, you start to think... Kane was choking because the newly-hatched fetus was blocking his ability to breathe, and he started going into a seizure because the creature was eating its way out of his body. The actual "birth" of the thing probably felt like a relief compared to what else was going on inside Kane's body.

You know, a lot of people complain about Veronica Cartwright performance in this film. They find her annoying, and way over the top. Frankly, for me, I think her performance was outstanding. She did a very realistic job of conveying the horror and fear that most of us would actually feel in real life. Think about it. When the chest burster comes out, she says “oh my God “, in in her voice, you can feel the utter shock, and absolute terror from that moment. She screams several times during the film. And while most people think she’s way over the top and annoying, I think she’s a fantastic actress and is way underrated. As a child actress, she was in a twilight zone. I never realized that as a child actress she was that good. If anybody gets to watch that twilight zone episode, which I forgot the title of it, you will see how fantastic and actress, even as a little kid that she was.

I believe that when his chest burst for the first time and nothing happened (no alien), that was a mistake but it was kept in (rightfully so). Also when John Hurt is convulsing the cast thought he wasn’t acting, that’s why the acting looked so natural especially from Yaphet Kotto and Tom Skerritt, they weren’t acting at first but genuinely concerned. They kept that part in the final cut and the rest of the scene was great acting. Lastly the blood flew further than expected and it hit Cartwright in the face and her response was genuine.

The cool thing is you can watch 20 of these in a row and the scene still never gets old.

All of these reactions are great. The first time watching this is always a shock ! xx
@mark7s9803 ай бұрын
Fun fact: None of the rest of the cast knew what was going to happen. The director wanted authentic reactions.

“It looks like a penis w a grill”…somebody come help get me off the floor!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣And Spaceballs did an excellently hysterical parody where the alien busts out wearing spats and adorns a top hat and cane and does a dance-it’s hysterical!!

I remember when my sisters finally watched this with me. Watching people experience the OG chestburst for the first time is always great.

I remember seeing this as a kid in the theater when it first came out. I can remember people screaming in fear and shock at this scene. One person vomited all over his seat. They just don’t make movies like they used to.

The chest chestburster scene would be great for a heartburn/antacid medication commercial.

45 years later, that scene has lost NONE of it's power to shock & terrify!

Saw it in the theater when it came out. We had heard about this scene. A group of us guys went... some did not look..

I'd love to see a compilation of people watching the scene in which Bilbo Baggins turns out to be a malevolent robot and he tries to kill a guy by forcing a rolled up magazine into his mouth.

The cast knew that there would be a special effect but they didn't know what specifically. The screams are real.

it was far more gruesome and much more blood was spraying far further than they had thought.

THANK YOU There's so much misinformation spread around saying that the "cast didn't know what was going to happen"

Alien is a cinematic masterpiece when it comes to Sci-fi horror.

My first reaction was total shock and horror! Learned later that none of the actors knew what was going to happen, so you get that same horrified, confused look on everybody's face, the perfect take! Remember also when Ash said, "Don't touch it!" I immediately distrusted him, programmed to do nothing but save the alien and return it for study - crew be damned. Should've killed it and unplugged Ash! Moral of the story, DON'T TAKE A WEYLAND-YUTANI CONTRACT!

Dan O'Bannon, the scriptwriter, apparently came up with this as an inventive way to explain how the alien got aboard the ship - but what makes it kinda sad is that that he was also inspired by his experiences with Crohn's disease, a very painful autoimmune condition that mainly affects the intestines.
@Bluesit322 ай бұрын
As someone who has experienced symptoms like Crohn's disease...it isn't quite THAT intense. I've started sweating profusely from the pain, curling up in a ball, and even passing out. I have never thrashed and screamed like that. ...the parasitic monster was also different.

This what you get when one of the UKs most admired actors does a horror sci-fi

THing was at the time, having a traditional family dinner at the same table every day was far more common and considered sacred in a sense. Thats why they had the previous scene with them all at the table eating, not only did it establish everyones characters and rapport with each other and as a group, but it seeded that mental association with family dinner. Which setup everyone for the horror of this scene.

In case you’re wondering, the only survivors are a single lady and her cat. 😊

They doubled the survivor count in Aliens to 4 Ripley, a young girl, a soldier and an artificial person that has been ripped in half sounds like an amazing night babysitting no?

Because I was so young when this movie came out, I read the novelization first. So I never got to experience the shock of seeing this scene blind in a theatre...which I oddly regret. It's disturbing on so many levels. PS: You can tell a few of these reactors had either already seen this or knew enough of what was coming as to not be truly surprised or horrified.
