As both a former cover band member and bar owner, the energy wave concept is important to remember. From the bar owner perspective they want you to have breaks where people can head back to the bar and get new drinks. The longer you play banger hits fewer people will go buy alcohol or get a bite to eat and pace themselves. The bartenders will love you, the bar owner will love you. Don't make the mistake of thinking the bar owner needs to love your setlist. They're about making money, not playlist content. From the crowd point of view clearing the floor periodically (to a degree with energy changes - not killing the vibe) allows women especially easier entry onto the floor and they can come onboard with friends from the bar or tables without being elbowed or scrunching themselves into tight spaces on a dance floor. From the guy perspective a lower energy portion of your set allows dudes to approach someone without shouting at the top of their lungs. I've got a decade of putting these two principles in use and they never fail. From a DJ perspective if you play between sets before a live cover band - #1 don't play their genre of music, so 80s cover band - no 80s tunes. #2 don't end on an energy high and leave everyone too exhausted to get on the dance floor when the band starts up. We fired a couple DJs for doing the exact opposite of #1 and #2. We can't control house DJs but found a decent tip (above what the venue paid them) for them managing our crowd for the two 30-40 minute set breaks goes a long way in building a positive relationship if the bar was in our regular rotation.

This is what drew me into the enjoyment of being a DJ. I have always been able to read people really well while spinning tracks be it during the intermission between bands or being the DJ for a wedding or corporate party. I enjoy that sense of control I you get as a DJ over peoples emotions and seeing their response to the vibes you are putting out. When you are doing a wedding reception and people are really letting their hair down so to say is when I am super happy as a DJ.
