I frequently get requests to not only review new motorbikes but some favourite second hand machines too and that's where my series "Readers Rides" comes in. In this very special episode I get to ride a classic touring bike that I've had my eye (and ears) on for many a year, the brilliant Honda VFR800 Vtec....and this particular bike isn't any ol' machine and certainly isn't a garage queen....

Solid machines. Love them in red. I think it was MCN a few years back, a guy who was a courier, put 450 k miles on a Vfr 750, before changing to the 800, which was his current bike, and had clocked up 250k on that. Absolutely bulletproof.

I've had Honda VFR's since 1996, starting with a 750 and then upgrading to a 1998 VFR800, although I've only hade the early pre 2002 Vtec models, not the later post 2002 version in your video. As with many owners I've personalised my VFR with many modifications but without compromising the overall reliability and all-round usability. I'm a not vertically endowed, nor is my inside leg measurement, so a slightly lower Sargent seat was good option and further improved comfort, as was a recent change to flatter handlebars which means a more upright riding position with less wrist strain, similar to the Crossrunner riding stance. Unlike the VFR in the review, my bike does not have an under seat exhaust, but has a high level Remus carbon fibre unit that snugly tucks under the RHS pillion foot peg. All the hydraulic hoses were replaced with Goodrich for a lifetime of use and all fluids, including engine oil, changed for fully synthetic products. I fitted a dual USB socket and voltmeter in the fairing and a 1 inch ball mount (AKA RAM mount) and Quadlock for my phone. Suspension is now a bit sportier with an Ohlins rear monoshock and Maxton re-valved front forks. This does make for a slightly less compromised ride on bumpy roads, but is great on the twisty sections and fast sweeping bends. As with the bike reviewed it also has full Givi Monokey luggage rack & panniers. Other mods include a self-cancelling indicator module, alarm, full LED light conversion, Scott chain oiler, carbon fibre hugger and adjustable rider foot pegs. This has been a brilliant and reliable bike for the last 20 odd years and I've done some (heavily laden) long camping trips without a hitch.

My VFR800 (2004) was a poor neglected commuter beast. Never washed and lived outside at the office or at Bristol Airport. Ran up and down the M5/ A38 for 3 years in all weathers. Never let me down, started first time every time. Great workhorse of a bike. And i only paid 2 grand for it.

Saying you reviewed a VFR is not too dissimilar to saying you reviewed a Honda. The VFR has cult status almost by Gen and not universally. For example, those who worship an FI wouldn’t go near a VTech. Similarly there are those who wouldn’t touch an 800 over a 750.

Vtech "kick" depends on how hard you twist the throttle and what gear you're in ... if you reef on the throttle in 1st through 3rd you def get a noticeable kick (currently riding a 2005 VFR800) if you just roll it on its almost imperceptible.

I had a 2008 and a 2012 VFR. It has 4 valves per cylinder of which only 2 valves work until you hit 6300 rpm at which point hydraulic pressure opens up the other two valves. It's not rogue but It definitely gives you a thrust forward to remember. I challenged a R8 Audi once and almost smashed into the back of it when my vtec engaged. Love them VFRs tremendously.

The only thing you need to go to a shop for is the valve adjustments, which is every 40,000 miles iirc, the combined brakes have a few extra steps to bleed but totally doable by one person.

Great vid and I love RichyVida - I have an '05 that I took on an Ironbutt from Wichita, KS to Kingman, AZ. Took our time getting home, then cleaned it up, taped up the lights and did a track day the next weekend. With a PowerCommander, I run about the middle of the pack in the Intermediate group. Only the liter bikes pull away from me. Not bad versatility on a bike that I bought for @$4,000 US.

They're not a proper vtec engine. They simply switch from 8valve to 16valve at 7k or whatever. It doesn't adjust the cam profile like in a civic type r for example. The "vtec" bikes also lost the gear driven cams which gave the earlier 750 and 800i's that iconic sound.

Been waiting for this vid since I saw it on your insta! Awesome bike 👍 This is the first “big bike” I ever rode after my boss gave me a go on his and I’ve been after one ever since. That’s how I found Richys vids, as he actually asked my boss to do a ride out with him (both VFRs) as my boss used to run a KZbin channel himself (2WheelsWide) Still want a VFR800 😅 next year maybe. Great vid as always.

Had a VFR 750 back in 1987? The gear driven cam model. Bought it cos the worst thing the press at the time clould say about it was it was so good you would loose your licence. Loved it till I fell off at low speed and couldn't afford to fix the fairing, traded for £2,000 and a second-hand Honda XL125. (Bought a VW Beetle with money) 😭

about to celebrate my vfrs 85k milestone its a 2002 bought 3 years ago at 29k and runs as good as the day i bought it. a daily commuter and elegant tourer i have traveled all around the country on all kinds of adventures many different road terrains in all the weathers and she just takes it in her stride. however she has recently begun to develop the ol dreaded vfr electrical issue a known problem for this bike however also its only Achilles heel and can be sorted but will potentially leave you stranded if you dont keep onto of the electrical system. it seems honda built this bike perfectly then skimped on the elctrical wiring side which is such a let down for a bike with such potential. as ive been investigating and trying to solve the issue ive come to learn that sensitive and fragile electrical components and there wires placed slap bang above and near a radiator and its coolant pipes then concealed with fairing is not good engineering and if left unchecked will damage these components over time causing sed issue. nevertheless i still love her and refuse to give up on her or sell her

Yep, some people like to know all the tech details, some people don’t. He knows the power of his bike in the only way that matters, riding it. The raw figures don’t tell you how the bike will accelerate, handle and brake. You have to get on and ride it for that. I would never buy a bike or car without a (long) road test for that reason.

Got a 2011 VFR800 myself & I love the Vtec, it was panned initially by a lot of bike testers for being a bit jerky when the Vtec kicked in but Honda improved the Vtec & made it a bit smoother & it goes like shit off a hot shovel. same with the linked brakes, I've nevere had a problem with them & not forgeting the ABS, this is a revalation if you've never driven a bike with ABS before.

Great to see richy on your channel again been following him since his norway tour great bloke & a fellow midlander, Speaking as an ex honda mechanic 85,000 is nothing on one of those bikes its just run in :-) if you go to the states you will regularly see them with 200.000 miles on its all about the servicing they don't like running on dirty oil, A bike from a fantastic period of the company before the bean counters got there hands on them when everything was built to a quality not to a price P.S Keep the new format up andy love the direction the channels going in

Yes the VF750S wasn't one of Honda's finest moments but all its problems are well documented and fixable - plus if it wasn't such a Dog they wouldn't have needed to go back to the Drawing Board and start the VFR family, the rest as they say is history.

Hi TMF, I love your channel and I´m happy to see an affordable bike under your review (unfortunately so short)! Two things I just can´t understand about this guy: 1. Why wouldn´t you let anyone ride your 03´VFR? It has literally no value with this mileage (so even to replace it crashed would be cheaper then to buy a mountainbike) and 2. how can you run a motovolg not knowing what is the power of your bike. I mean, if you had like 10 bikes and ride this one sporadically, but to make over 100K km on a bike not knowing the basic specs :o) I just don´t get it.. I guess I´m the strange guy here then.. I let anyone ride my bikes and I know almost everything about it and I haven´t even started my mvlog yet :o))) P.S. I didn´t mean to critisice, I´m just amazed..
