‪@Steamtrainvideos‬ posted this awesome clip of Reading 2102 a few months back. It's some of the best hard-working steam engine sound I've ever heard, and there's a few neat things operationally to point out that I hope you'll enjoy. The video is here, if you'd like to watch and blow your speakers out: • Reading & Northern 210...

Thanks for the reaction Hyce! 3 things to add: 1) I'm pretty sure the fireman is using the shovel to scan the fire for any holes/high spots/etc. They use this same technique with 425 which obviously doesn't have a stoker. 2) I filmed 3 other trips in the cab, and while all the departures were impressive, Shane (the engineer) really went after it on this day (Sept. 3). 3) This is a great railfan-friendly operation that is well worth visiting/riding/chasing. The sound is great in videos, but it cannot compare to being there. And 2102 is by far the loudest locomotive I've heard. From trackside the exhaust will make your ears ring when they're working full throttle up a grade.
@PowerTrain611
@PowerTrain611 Жыл бұрын
That is 100 percent what the fireman is doing. You have to be careful when doing this on big engines. The draft can pull the shovel right out of your hands. You'll never see it again if that happens... Till you dump the ashpan. Small, melted chunks of the head and wood ash will be all that's left.

@@maxwilson7001 That's because most preserved steam engines don't get to work nearly as hard as this. Imagine a Terex Titan being used to haul a handful of fist sized stones. That's the extent of how hard most preserved steam locomotives work, mainly due to the cost of maintenance and the downtime involved. The harder you work 'em, the more work you have to do to keep 'em running, especially with the firebox and running gear. The last time 2102 worked this hard was probably when she worked the Rambles.

Loved this. First time I saw 2102 was with 425, coming around the curve out of Nesquehoning and boy, oh boy, what a show. Just barely hearing the whistle over the exhaust, seeing the giant plume of black smoke, and then 2102’s headlight just peaking out from behind the warehouse headed into the curve. Thought all the smoke was from both engines, nope, mostly 2102. The thunder was phenomenal. I’m absolutely going back next year.

I've chased the 2102 for 2 years, and just got to ride it a week ago out of the newly opened Nesquehoning Station where they were pulling even more cars through the Lehigh Valley gorge to Pittston. I sat as close to the locomotive as you could get, got covered in coal, and it was an absolute blast! Of all the excursions I've been on , the 2102 and RBM&N definitely put on the best show hands down.

2102 is just casually waltzing along with 18 cars. Just...epic. I have probably watched this video a dozen times and it never ceases to make me smile. I can only imagine the noise of one of these hauling something like The Empire State Express or a long heavy freight drag between Omaha and Salt Lake City. It would probably be like a religious ceremony to us railfans. Would love to see Hyce do commentary when UP 3985 and the UP 5511 get up and at 'em back on the mainline, or better yet...let Hyce RUN one of the big engines like 2102, 4014, or 844.

I got to ride behind 2102 on August 13th, 2022, which was actually a doubleheader with 425 because the train was too heavy for 2102 so instead of a diesel they tossed 425 on front to handle the extra tonnage. The Illinois Central painted cars are San Luis & Rio Grande cars bought at the bankruptcy auction. The reason for the long train and doubleheader was because it was Andy Mueller’s birthday. And Ross Roland was on the train also.

They took her north to Tamaqua and picked up some loaded coal hoppers. She never missed a beat on the return trip. If you get the opportunity to venture to see her it’ll be a trip well spent. BTW they are also rebuilding a smaller locomotive as we speak.

In 1999 Santa Fe 3751 went through Cajone a Tehachapi passes on it's way to the Sacramento Rail Fair. The BNSF mainline runs near my house, just outside the Bakersfield yard limit is the beginning of 70 mph track limit. I stood at the edge of the ballast near the whistle post. He passed me high ball. The sound is what I remember the most. A week later I was at Walong siding, better known as the Tehachapi Loop when 3751 was headed home. This is the other end of the spectrum. A broken rail caused a speed restriction of 10 MPH. 3751 was not being escorted by a diesel so it was doing all the work. Literally walking speed through the loop. Oh and it was twilight.

They pull between 19 and 21 cars on these trips. I chased one of the test runs and one of the trips this summer. It was just as awesome as it is on the video as it is in person! It's got some rod slop especially on the fireman's side, but it's not the worst I've ever heard. I'm sure they'll remedy that at some point if it's any major concern. If/when you make it out to Eastern PA, we're very fortunate to have so many tourist railroads all over, most are within an hour of each other. If you haven't seen or visited before, other than Strasburg and R&N, I recommend the Allentown & Auburn RR in Kutztown, Pa, Wilmington & Western RR just outside Wilmington, DE, and Black River and Western RR in NJ. The New Hope & Ivyland RR in New Hope, Pa and Colebrookdale RR in Boyertown, Pa are nice rides but are pricy comparatively.

Is this the New River Gorge excursion? They usually have a long consist trough the New River Gorge - The grand canyon of the East. I saw "Drive that New River Train" I think Penteax was the one who produced that. Back in the 1990s, I think. Play, I did a quick search and found a 3:00 excerpt of the video. Then there's a bunch of railfan videos, one with a cab ride. First off, the title is "Runnin' That New River Train" documenting the rail excursion out of Hunting, West Virgina. It-'s not uncommon to have a 32 car consist. This video had Nickle Plate's 765 (a 4-8-4). Now Reading's 2101 is mentioned as pulling the train for a few years, so this clip could be recently from thet excursion. This is an awesome video, and you get the sound of the engine without a narrator talking over it.

The deafening sounds of that mighty locomotive, Hyce's kid in candyshop reactions with the knowledge to back it up, or seeing something that big start and go with that load. Who am I kidding, it's all of the above! It's like watching Hyce having an religious experience like the highest priest of his religion visiting him. I thought I got why train spotting was such an event that people traveled far and wide, after Top Gear had that race between train, motorcycle and car. But I understand more after this clip. What a rush! I've been in quarries with 100+ tons of earth moving machines moving close to me or that one time I witnessed the largest load the local quarry blew up in one go ever, these are those occasions that I have to compare this to.
