So basically dont judge a card by its effect alone, you need the context behind the card, understanding of popular decks or tech choices to integrate them

This is so true! My now pet deck "fabled" looked awful when i first looked at it. "Oh, the whole deck just discards itself for 1 or 2 summons" If used correctly, i can end with a baronne and arc light with maybe a groza

fabled does indeed suck

I've noticed this too about YGO cards. No card exists in a vacuum. Reading the card does not necessarily give you good insight into how good the card actually is. How many cards seemed unsuspecting until they got abused to hell and back? Even cards that were situational at best when they released have seen top level competitive success years after. I'm not as familiar with other card games but I feel like it's easier to tell how good a card is (more) strictly off of reading just that card.

Depends on the game yeah. Wixoss, as an example, was in a state where the incidental synergy between cards in the Diva format wasn't worthwhile enough to focus on in most cases. So a lot of the cards would on paper seem to be a bit better than they were in practice. You needed to judge them based on things like "What types of removal do I expect to see?" "What are common gameplans I will face?" "How does my deck fare into those?" And it's kinda hard to tell that at first glance.
