I love when the sequel is so much better than book one like with the KJ Charles book! The only one I have read here is the scythe novel and I really liked the concept of that one. But as a the typical standalone reader that I am, I have never continued the series. D:

The first book in the scythe trilogy actually can get away with being a standalone imo. You just have to be okay with the somewhat open ending of the story. But it's the kind of open endedness that works, if you know what I mean. I personally am a BIG fan of the musings of the Thunderhead in book 2 (which replace the diary entries of the Scythes between chapters from book one).
