As a Bolton fan I feel for Reading. Any rivalries aside this is appalling what is happening. We were so close to losing our club due to the EFL allowing owners like this guy. I said when we had trouble we were the tip of a massive iceberg and that is appalling. Bury and Macclesfield should never have been allowed to happen and I hope Reading get a new owner like ours now. One that cares, one that is open, one who runs the club right and one that is honest with fans. All the best Reading FC me and my son really enjoyed our visit there this season even though we lost. If clubs ran as proper businesses, the owner's wealth wouldn't be an issue. That's the absurdity of what fans are allowing. With almost every club I've seen going through this, you go through the social media timeline and you see the same pattern: (step 1) Fans screaming for x,y, z to be bought When x,y, z don't pan out, then complain than a,b, and c weren't bought instead Rinse, and back to step 1 until Owner realises they are just losing money to go nowhere so decided to get out. Then if a New owner comes in, it's back to step 1 until the owner can't find anyone willing to take on such a basket case. Fans keeping an eye on their club's finances and having the courage to tell the club to stop overspending would do a lot more than any ownership test

The fact this owner was even allowed to own the club shows us that the 'Fit and Proper' tests the EFL use for ownership is an absolute joke. I'm just grateful Bolton got bought at the 11th hour and now our owners have brought such a positive atmosphere back to the Reebok and, more importantly, the community. As a Stockport County fan, I've seen my club dragged to the brink of oblivion by a cast of characters that wouldn't even be believable as story book villains. A Rugby club owner who brought us purely to gain a home for Sale Sharks and charged us extortionate rates to play at the stadium we've called home since 1902. A former footballer who made false promises and never ended up buying the club despite committing us to expenses he would never pay off, a Scouse chancer who paraded himself as a saviour on the pitch despite not having two pennies to rub together. Thankfully the supporters trust stabalised us and kept us alive but not before an 11 year drop from the Championship to Conference North. So I completely understand what is going on at Reading and exactly how their fans must feel...hopeless, betrayed, depressed and just generally awful. However we got our moment we desperately needed, a local multi-millionaire bought the club in 2021 and we haven't looked back since. The club is now as stable as it's ever been and we're doing it in a Madejski-esque way, spending more money on the academy and training facilities to produce our own talent, which just two years later we're reaping the rewards from and improvign the Stadium and matchday experience making pretty much every game a sell-out. I'm sure Reading will have their moment like us, like we ourselves, Bury, Blackpool, Macclesfield, Southampton, Leicester...it may get worse before it gets better but keep the faith that it WILL get better.

Not a reading fan but I am from Berkshire, the only team we have in berks in the efl. Reading was a very convenient away game for me (boro fan) it was a bit of a running joke that there was no atmosphere but clearly there's a reason for it and now I'm more aware of the situation. As a boro fan sometimes there's a lot of frustrations due to lack of spending but our chairman is by far the best in the efl because he is militant about financial fair play. This is starting to get beyond a joke the amount of teams dieing due to bad ownership. It's not just football teams that die, it's part of the towns or cities or in this case a part of an entire county.

People will say United fans are spoilt with wanting the glazers out, but the club would be in this exact same situation if it already wasn't a big club with high revenue, over paying for useless players, insane wages is how you destroy a club like it's happening with Reading... there needs to be something done about terrible ownerships they get off too easily while killing historic clubs

Yep, but at least we are not “Doing A Leeds”, even with our high debt, wasting a billion on bad transfers since 2017, and club infrastructure being neglected. It is just that Manchester United have some of the highest standards every year and expect consistent success thanks to the fans and toxic English media and tabloids. There is hope for Man United as Ratcllife is bringing in a new CEO to modernize the club along with a Director of Football, new board members, recruitment staff, and sporting director. Although, the Glazers are still bad owners who care more about making money than being successful on the pitch especially after SAF retired, which pisses off fans who grew up watching the team dominate English and world football, and almost all the fans want them to sell the club fully from the Stretford Enders to global fans like myself. They have been hated from the very beginning with a breakaway club founded after The Glazers bought Man United called FC United of Manchester. Man United will bounce back because of the legacy built by Sir Matt and Sir Alex, large revenue, and fanbase, just like Liverpool did under Klopp.

Reading in the League One relegation zone is astonishing I remember them in the late 2000s in the Premier League and as a top level Championship side They barely missed Europe and didn’t realize how close they were until now only a final day draw cost them

It was 05/06, I was 10, just going through school, and my grandad bought me a season ticket for the year, one in which he renewed the year after so I got to see my home club take on the biggest clubs in the world. It’s what made me fall in love with football, and I will always love Reading FC for that, what I see now is the football club I love, being killed before my eyes, it’s heartbreaking.

This is why the Bundesliga is worth looking at as a model: 50 plus 1 percent rule looks pretty good to me. With that model supporters can own their own team. Get some local business support for the 20 to 30 percent not fan owned and it's pretty good sailing. Talking about buying players... would imagine that Reading doesn't have an Academy?

You said it: “it’s terrifying”. It shouldn’t happen. How can an owner that has bankrupted TWO CLUBS be allowed to be involved in football. The situation is truly dire. We’ve always been a well run club who developed youth and scouted talent well leading to a sustainable club but it’s all close to collapse. Repeated fines and points deductions are not helping as we have an owner who doesn’t care about anything except recouping money. This hurts so much but thanks for the publicity with the video. Good job

Coming from a Wigan fan it’s obvious there is a problem within the EFL. Rewind 10 years ago and financial problems where extremely rare, but now you’ve seen the likes of Bury and Macclesfield go completely bust. Bolton and Wigan almost going under completely. Southend and Scunthorpe still hanging on for the lives. Then teams like Oldham, Blackpool, Derby, Sheff Wed and several other clubs suffering financially. What used to happen on a rare occurrence is now happening to several clubs every year. The Leganes owner was denied a sale for Wigan, but someone who had all his money in property was allowed. Relying on sales of houses to pay for wages. Dai Yong was denied buying Hull City but a couple of years later he’s owner of Reading. The owner of Bury before they went bust didn’t know the town had a football club. The fit and proper test is a major issue and the EFL themselves wouldn’t pass their own checks.

As a Hearts fan I know what the Reading fans are going through. I remember that Hearts very nearly went burst in 2014 like Gretna no thanks to the infamous Vladimir Romanov who embezzled all the money Hearts had and they very nearly went under. Now thanks to Ann Budge and foundation of Hearts, the club are back where they are and thriving.

Terrible, heartbreaking and horribly unjust situation for everyone involved with Reading FC. As a Coventry fan, we have been there ourselves, twice in fact: administration and almost liquidated, and falling to L2 in 2017, as a result of scandalous mismanagement and board room incompetence that began before relegation from the top flight in 2001. Something is going fundamentally wrong with club ownership, it’s an absolute travesty. Wishing you all the best, Reading fans.

Villa could have easily gone the same way under Tony Xia and almost did. Although the were reasons for his money issues and least he knew when to respectfully sell and always tried to put the club first.

Absolutely scandalous what reading are having to go through. Where is the efl in all this? It’s clear that the owner isn’t fit and proper. Sanctions should be applied to owners and not the club. Ultimately It’s the fans who suffer. As a Swansea fan I hope you Royals get out of this 👍🦢

As a Blackpool fan, I must admit that the current ownership situation at Reading FC fills me with a mix of empathy and anger. Having witnessed the turmoil and suffering that my own beloved club endured under the Oyston regime, I can’t help but draw parallels between the two situations. The Oystons, for years, subjected Blackpool fans to a reign of incompetence, neglect, and financial mismanagement, tarnishing the legacy of a once proud football club. The notorious disregard for the club’s progress, the decay of the stadium, and the excessive profiteering at the expense of the team’s success left us disillusioned and disheartened. It pains me to see another set of loyal supporters endure a similar fate, especially with the knowledge of how difficult it is to escape such clutches. The Reading FC ownership, by all accounts, seems to have caused its own fair share of discontent among the fans. Their mismanagement of funds, failure to invest in the squad, and seemingly detached approach to the club’s heritage echo the darkest chapters of Blackpool’s recent past. It is deeply disheartening to see a once-promising club struggle because of the actions of those who should have the best interests of the team at heart. Therefore, my thoughts and sympathies go out to the Reading supporters who share our pain and frustration. It is my hope that they soon find a resolution that will bring stability, prosperity, and most importantly, a sense of pride back to their beloved club
QPR are in trouble.
