Crazy KZbin recommended me this video considering I just binged all 7 books like a month ago. Definitely agree that watching the movie after reading the book totally changes your perception of it. Before I read GOF, I loved the movie. After reading it though, it's definitely my least favorite. The director, Mike Newell, was open about the fact he never read the books and even complained about how long they were. You can tell how little he knew about the story based on how the final product turned out. They botched the Barty Crouch Sr/Jr storyline. In the book it seemed like Jr might've been innocent. But in the movie it's made pretty clear he's totally guilty. Also I really hated how they handled the Quidditch world cup. Like it made absolutely no sense to show the lead up to the match only to not show any of the match itself. As bad as fudge was in the movies, he was 100x worse in the books. He really only cared about hanging on to the position of minister of magic. But honestly my biggest disappointment with the movie was that they didn't show the moment with Harry and Mrs. Weasley, which imo was the most emotional moment in the book.

That’s so interesting, I haven’t yet dived into the BTS of the films, but that is baffling - why direct a book adaptation and not read the book?? I think the movie takes out a lot of relationship progression and dynamics with the Weasleys and Harry, in the books, he is one of Molly’s sons but I still feel distance in the movie - like he’s just her sons friend.

@@ReadsWithPhoebe Yeah it's crazy. He didn't seem to care about the source material at all. He was more focused on outdoing the previous 2 directors of the 1st three films (Chris Columbus and Alfonso Cuaron) rather than building off what they had created. He had originally planned on going with a darker atmosphere for GOF, but after watching POA, he decided against doing that because he didn't want people to think he had copied Cuaron. Also 100% agree about the relationship dynamics with the Weasley's and Harry. Not only did the movies just completely erase the existence of Charlie Weasley, but they pretty much do the same thing with Percy after the 2nd movie. And even with Ron the movies really dropped the ball with his portrayal. The scriptwriter, Steve Kloves, is a huge Hermione fan and that definitely comes across when you watch the movies. Like giving Hermione some of Ron's best moments. In POA, Ron was the one who said to Sirius, "If you want to kill Harry you'll have to kill us too", but it was said by Hermione in the movie.

Goblet of Fire is definitely in my top 3 of the series. I haven't watched the movies in a while, but I also remember being disappointed. What are your opinions about the differences in the golden trio? Just how Goblet of Fire is one of my favorite books, and the adaptation being my least favorite. Book Ron is my favorite out of the trio and movie Ron is my least favorite.

Oo interesting… I really love movie Ron in the first 3 films at least - I think he does such a good job at being the comedic relief when a lot of the wit and general comedy from the books are taken out of the films, but I do see that wearing off soon. I really like book Harry, I think he is smart and expressive, and he’s majorly dumbed down for the films (I also don’t love Daniel Radcliffe’s acting 🫣) Hermoine, I’m always going to love - a studious girl who loves cats - but I’m not feeling any particularly strong emotions book or movie wise for her character.
