Devil's Bride was so intense. I really loved this couple so much. The mystery was just enough, and I loved how strong the heroine was. It was written so romantically. It did drag a bit in the middle though. I think because I listened to it, and got through it much faster.. that helped. Also, what made it a 6 star for me was the scene after Chillingsworth. The misunderstanding that could have went completely off track, but instead he believed her. I really just haven't seen that very often. Also, I am on book 6 in the series and all the heroes are very obsessed with their heroines.

So true! I loved how the misunderstanding didn’t actually come to be this big thing and really proved how strong their romance is!

As. 48 yo woman, having read romance novels for over 35 years I can tell you they are quite weak. The troop is always about a love so very pure (!?), no flesh character development, hardly ever a second plot, and no supporting people.
@ireneafonso41713 жыл бұрын
@@Sofia_Monteiro I'm 45 and they were the first ones I read, I have a soft spot for Barbara Cartland. As for Georgette Heyer I find her books very entertaining still. I just don't read many historicals at the moment because I'm tired of the genre. But because she stopped in the eighties, I was curious on her opinion on even older books. The genre has changed so much! One of my other soft spots is for Victoria Holt, but her books are not for everyone, certainly not for this generation of romance readers.

@abcarlson803 жыл бұрын
@@katyareads221 based on the writing style of Shadow Music, I feel like Garwood's name is used, but a very green writer took this on or it's just a really early draft of Garwood's that they rushed to publication. Likely the former, though, as I am a fan of several romance authors of that same time period who just sold out their name and a tragic writer takes over.

Julie Garwood and Galen Foley are both excellent romance authors. Love their stuff. The Duke is so good. 😍 Eloisa James is a favorite of mine for historical romance. She's right up there with Lisa Kleypas for me. I think that's why I prefer the "old school " historical romance authors so much. The story's just have a lot more to it. They're really developed. Don't get me wrong, while I'm reading a Tessa Dare or the like it's often enjoyable, but on the whole they aren't memorable. While a good James, Kleypas, Foley, etc sticks with you.

I feel like the 90's and early 2000's were the peak for historical romances. I felt like the character and plot development were better then. I still remember plot and characters from books like The Bride (Garwood) and The Duke (Foley). Usually the sex scenes were more numerous and better, imo. (I like a heaving bosom and turgid member 😂) Yes, Stephanie Laurens' books are typically more involved. Her Cynsters series is very good, but yes you do have to pay attention to them as most have subplots afoot too, which, I personally like. Also, many steamy scenes, which again, I'm a fan of. That's honestly my biggest critique with author's like Tessa Dare, Lynsay Sands and Sophie Jordan. While they're fun when I'm reading them they can never crack better than a 4 star review from me because they aren't very memorable. (I've accidentally partially re-read Dare and Jordan both because I didn't remember the book) I am a big re-reader, and if I won't re-read a book then it doesn't get a 5 star review from me. (accidental re-read because your book wasn't memorable enough doesn't count) 😂

I'd like to see you do the same "through the decades" concept with a trope or common romance time period: Highlander romances, enemies to lovers, Regency, et al. I'm about 75% through Devil's Bride, and it's just okay. After Fated Mates had me all hyped for it, I was expecting better. Lovely writing style, definitely sets the stage, but it's boring and I don't see any chemistry: he wants her while she's like "sure, I guess." eh . . . I need to go back and read Once & Always as this is one of my favorite historicals that I've read at least a dozen times, but it has been over a decade since my last read-through. I'm guessing things that crossed the line for me then are unforgivable now, but I'll give it another shot anyway. I was blooded on McNaught, Garwood, & Brown, so I'm used to questionable plot points.

Jason (Ιάσων) is a Greek male name. Actually, Greek male and female names, and variations of them, are found quite a lot in HRs, especially in those placed in the 17th and 18th century. Most probably, because of the influence of classical ideas - education and liberal arts.
