This is due to using a right-hand rule rotation rule to go from x to y. Thumb along x, fingers along y OR thumb out of the page (z axis) so fingers wrap from x to y. The notation is embodied in the logo of The Institute of Electrical and Electrronics Engineers (IEEE). The x-y-z coordinate system allows location in 3-dimensional for mechanical and graphics use. Some 3D graphics programs use left-hand rule which messes folks up. Complex numbers (those involved with the square root of -1) as a function of time can be represented using x for the real part, y for the imaginary part and z for time. Thanks to the French mathematician Rene Descarte for Cartesian coordinates. The three axes are mutually orthogonal (at right angles to each other). As with math, music and many other areas demand learning a notation system that suits the topic. It is vexing, but can be fun. I like your explanation of the grand staff.

Treble clef and bass clef show vortexes. Treble is centripetal and pulls the force through the middle and the bass is centrifugal, pushing the force outwards. Your reference is the resonating note. Everything else is the Fibonacci sequence 0-1-1-2-3-5-8. 1-3-5 is a major. 1-2-5 is a minor. When you divide two consecutive Fibonacci numbers you get the golden number, which is vortex mathematics.

Great lesson, I always found it confusing that guitar music is written in the treble clef and the notes one octave lower than where they sound. So, middle C is written one ledger line below the staff but it sounds like the note on the second string (B) on the first fret. I think that is crazy.

When you were notating the G major scale in treble clef, shouldn’t there also be a # indicated on the lowest space of the staff (F) or is that assumed?
@rickysguitar
@rickysguitar Жыл бұрын
Any time an F is placed on or off the staff it is by the default an F#. The accidentals in the key signature declare that, so yes assumed.

Do you also teach understanding time notations? I always got confused when I got past quarter notes. Why don't they just write the notes to be played, instead of being confusing and writing the double sharp or double flat? Why make it so complicated?

Ricky, I started watching your video hoping to increase my sight reading capabilities and if I didn’t already know how to read music, (I play piano, keyboards and some guitar-poorly) I would have been hopelessly lost by your explanations. I’m not trying to knock you but you put explanations that should take place over several lessons with weeks of much smaller bits to understand. You offered too much info for someone with minimal understanding of notation to learn in one lesson. I forced myself to watch the video way beyond the point where I could get anything out of it, and I already know music notation. Break your lesson up into four lessons building on each other and you’ll have a winner as you obviously have a interesting and deep understanding of notation to teach.

Duly noted Robert. Sometimes it's very difficult to know when enough is enough with KZbin. Sometimes it's too little, sometimes it's too much. This is a bit fast and I got some of it, but it would be great if it was broken down into smaller chunks. Like, maybe there could be a video kind of going over each little part with many more examples and details. The very first bit such as the first 10 minutes or so I pretty much knew what was going on and then I totally got lost. maybe there could be a new set of videos that go over each little part in more detail. I would definitely watch all of them because I like the teaching style but it’s a little bit too fast.

I agree, although pausing and rewinding helps mitigate that a little. Also a bit of information overload. There's a lot of stuff you're assumed to know, like what whole steps and half steps are. You'd have to Google search what that stuff means

Hi Rick, Everything spot on, just a quick question. Guitar open high E, on the treble clef, in the space. I want it to sound in the 24th fret. I could add an 8va15ma above it and it sounds in the 24th fret, right? Cheers.
@rickysguitar
@rickysguitar Жыл бұрын
8va means the pitch is played 1 octave higher. 15ma means the pitch is played 2 octaves up. If you have a band score that useful for saving space I’ve the staff so yes! The high E in the staff notated 15ma would sound at the 24th fret.

Its funny, I hate Tabs. I learned music in the early 80's and had to learn to read on the piano, then on guitar. Tab is great for specific fingerings on guitar but its annoying to me, I prefer reading. Many times I come up with my own figuring which is why I prefer it I guess.
@rickysguitar
@rickysguitar Жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan of relying on tabs after you gain more motor control over your hands. Tabs are great for learning a few tunes and getting started. I prefer standard notation as many Tabs are inaccurately transcribed and notes are in completely the wrong position. As you mentioned, "come up with your own fingering". I'm the same! BUT, you can only do that if you can read the dots! I'm not knocking TAB. I do think it's great to learn BOTH! The more you know, the more you know!
