A genuine quote from my 12-year old self writing in a pink polka dot journal with stickers of David Tennant as Doctor Who on the cover: "Just been to the HOTTEST party of the year, all of the girls were wearing shorty shorts and I had my long khaki trousers on because I didn't want to be a sheep. Georgina had forgotten to shave her armpits so everybody cringed hard."

There is (or used to be) a show on radio 4 where famous people would read their teenage diaries. (It was probably called 'My Teenage Diary'). You should listen to it - a lot of it is on youtube. Particularly the episode with Robert Webb, which is one of the best half-hours of radio I've ever heard.

I never really kept a diary, but I did write about what happened and how unfair everything was when I got angry. I think I still have about 5 pages of angry text in a drawer somewhere from times I felt misunderstood, angry and underappreciated. I still do the same thing now because it helps me calm down and look at what happened from a different perspective.

Hahaha oh I loved this Leena - I also have an embarrassingly lage diary selection (I'm 21 and have written a diary nearly every day since I was about 7 years old), and was also OBSESSED with periods when I was around 12/ 13, it seems. I genuinely recorded the date that everyone in my class at school started their period (I went to a girls' school), including loads of period anecdotes from friends - I started at 14 so seemed convinced that it was just never gonna happen for me haha, but it is hilarious and so so cringe to read back now

I absolutely LOVE that you used to be Christian, People on KZbin seem to rarely have had this (happy, protestant modern christian) upbringing that i experienced, but i love your references to it, the bible quotes in different colour felt tip pen, its such a memory jolt, really brings back the camps and youth services, the singing with eyes closed and hands in the air as you silently ignore the few people in the room who have inevitably broken down in tears, all after a hard day of seminars, swimming and team sports...oh those were the days.

This was just fantastic! I was seriously obsessed about having my diary discovered by my parents or something (as if they care lol) and used to write a lot of entries with warnings in them in case anyone who wasn't me read those. Also because it was the time of sms I used to write in such fashion (without vowels basically) so no one could understand the writing fully. A decade after (!), not even I can decipher what's in most of those pages :) (I also copied some of the texts I got from boys I liked, but I think I destroyed them time after that, I was very dramatic).

Fifteen year old Jen was a girl guide, doing piano and netball, trying to be head girl (that was never going to happen considering that shit was a popularity contest (or at least was at my school)), was writing a georgia-nicholson-rip-off novel, was in love with a girl in her ballet glass, stuck pictures of Lindsay Lohan all over her school planner and sometimes wore blue lipstick in her bedroom.
