Reading of Zora Neale Hurston's book Barracoon

I cried reading chapter 5. “Lor’ Lor’.” RIP to Olulale Kossola AKA Cudjo Lewis and all of the original enslaved people from Ghana Africa. I recently visited AfricaTown this past weekend and met one of the descendants of the Keeby’s, Charlie Lee Keeby, near the AfricaTown Heritage House. He explained to me a great deal and I talked with him for about an hour. I continued to explore the dilapidated town and waved and spoke to anyone I could. I visited Cudjo’s landmark at Union Baptist Church and and Peter Lee’s AKA Gumpa’s chimney (where the house used to be), right off the Cochrane/AfricaTown Highway. More socioeconomic reform is needed there. I will be back to visit one day, but I’m glad I got the chance to set my feet on the same soil as where the ancestors once stood. We remember them, honor them, and move our people forward. Umoja. Ase’🙏🏾

I love my people. Just to think we have only been free for 166 years. We are hurting one another daily when we should come together as one, like they did back then. If we could we could rule the world.
