It's so interesting how our individual use of the star rating systems can vary so much. The way you described severance for example, for me would be a low 3 lol. 4 for me is 'I really liked it'.

SEVERANCE….. my book club pick of the month it was soo funny when she referenced bits of chinese culture 😭😭 the poem she receives from bartholomews email is super famous and schoolchildren have contests on their recitation abilities!!

these violent delights by micah nemerever, is a good pick for books with a horrible mc. it's about 2 sociopaths who form this disturbing, all consuming relationship and end up committing murder together, its really beautifully written and i think youll really like it

Yellowface by R.F. Kuang might be a good pick for awful characters! And Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov obvs 💀

I was one of the one's that said Severance is my favorite book of all time! I really loved your review on it and still agree with everything you said. My taste and preferences in books literally all converge in Severance. For some reason, my favorite genre is 'mundane but something unsettling' workplaces, so I loved the bible storyline. I love post apocalyptic books like "The Road" and "Wanderers", so I loved the fever element. But I'm glad you finally got to read Severance! I'd also be so sad if I lost a library book!
@ebloom8218212 сағат бұрын
I have the exact same thoughts on Bunny like so close its almost scary 😅 The Grownup by Gillian Flynn is a fun one for unreliable/awful narrators, the narrator isnt like a super huge piece of shit or anything but shes a con artist who pretends to be psychic and meets her match lol. And its only like 50 or so pages i really liked it ^-^

A book with an awful/unlikeable main character could also be "The Death of Bunny Munro" by Nick Cave. I liked the book overall ^-^

I was so interested in your thoughts about severance! I was so excited to read and love all post-apocalyptic media. So many missed opportunities plot-wise though. Not that it was bad like you said, but I completely agree with you, it sort of flat lined for me. Which is so annoying because conceptually, it could have been so much more ugh

Book with awful characters, When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O'Neill. There are two main characters and they're both awful.

I’ve just discovered your channel (it was literally yesterday) and I love how you talk about books. It just so happens that you don’t love my favourite books and it breaks my heart 😭 like hello?? Bunny?? My all time favourite book 😭😭 but I read it before its current hype (in 2020) so I went into it without knowing it was supposed to be weird. I think going into it with expectations that it will be the weirdest book you’ve ever read might be setting this book up to be a flop. I’m so glad you still enjoyed it. It just breaks my heart you didn’t absolutely love it. And that you didn’t love Chlorine either, another favourite of mine 😅 but at the same time it makes me very curious as to what books you consider to be „weird” if these two weren’t weird enough. Because I love weird horror too

UPDATE: characters that are awful rec- i'm notably not done with this yet but so far Acts of Service by Lillian Fishman, if you don't mind like heavy on the erotica, is one i've been enjoying and eve (pov character) does seem pretty vaguely shitty

Have to say I really enjoy your channel, and am so glad you showed up in my recommended videos recently. A couple of books with really awful characters for you: Lolita by Nabokov - beautiful prose, masterfully written and a true glimpse into the mind of evil and the awareness of the existence of true horror which exists in our world. The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway - I have read thousands of books in my 61 years of life and this one wins the worst award for me. I can see what Ernie was going for with this one but the characters are vapid, cynical, hedonistic assholes! lol
@frankiesshelfКүн бұрын
i’ve definitely gotta get to lolita soon also ernie lmaoo 😭

For awful characters literally any ottessa moshfegh book…my favorite is lapvona. Definitely her most gruesome and disgusting. A touch of Jen by Beth Morgan, truly the most insufferable whiny main character but in the best way, boy parts by Eliza Clark if u haven’t read it yet, the guest by Emma cline if u haven’t read that
@frankiesshelfКүн бұрын
omg boy parts and a touch of jen are 2 of the 5 i’ve picked out that’s so funny i’ve already read the guest LOVED it but that ending … cmon

@frankiesshelf omg, she's one of my favorite authors! Everything I've read from her is amazing. I haven't yet read Twins -- her debut -- but I have read all the rest of them. We're kinda book twins, so I'm not surprised by this!

@frankiesshelf Pet by Catherine Chidgey; I agree with others who have suggested The Guest by Emma Cline; also agree with others about Ottessa Moshfegh's books; Open Throat by Henry Hoke. If you can possibly find it, try Ghosts of You by Cathy Ulrich. It's a book of flash fiction, told in 2nd person, which is unusual, and which I love but some people hate. The small stories are lists of why women (or, rather, their absences) are at the center of all murder stories, because they start the story. Ulrich digs deep and never flinches explaining why women are disposable. Of course, the murderers are the shadowy bad characters but this book is so damn unique, I bet you would like it.
