Six years ago my life partner died and I still grieve - I experience complicated grief as Joan Didion describes in this book. Didion describes her daily experiences -/ her 20 minute showers, her huevos rancheros one egg because these tangible behaviors are what are keeping her sanity anchored during a time when her life is without footing. Didion describes her activities, her responses, her reaching out to the person she loved most in the world - in a way thinking he is still there. This is a profoundly moving book for anyone who has lost a significant person in their life. The “name dropping” in this book is history that many people will appreciate, history transmitted the way only a book can transmit. Teased out in bits and pieces - before there was an internet.

An authentic, honest review. The book just did not move me in any way. I too think it received praise, awards because she's well known.

your impression of Joan Didion made me laugh so hard. She was self-important in a way that isn't accepted, in fact, it'd be pathologized and therapized, in our time.
