Watching yours and Jan's reactions to My Year of Rest and Relaxation back to back was wild 😂 Some of the "weirder" books I enjoyed and you might not have read are Tinfoil Butterfly, Good Neighbors by Sarah Langan, The Rust Maidens by Gwendolyn Kiste, Hawk Mountain (I think you might love this book!), and A Touch of Jen (everyone hates this book but I kinda liked it haha). The Honeys is also really cool and weird for a YA book

I read My Year of Rest and Relaxation when I was dealing with depression and insomnia myself. I actually read it during my Dean's leave from uni that I took because of my depression (so during my own "year of rest and relaxation", in a way, although I do love how ironic this title is because yeah, rotting in bed when you are su*cidal is hardly relaxing, and this book reflects that pretty accurately imo) and wow, I felt so seen by this book. I don't know how I would rate this right now when I don't have depression anymore because it's been 4 years since I've read it and I'm much better now mentally, but it still has a special place in my heart.

Went out on a limb and just read Earthlings a few years ago and it messed me up. It's not an easy book to read and still to this day I have no idea how I feel about it. Every time I talk about weird books now my finance asks, "is it as weird as that really weird one you read?" because nothing has even come close since then! Glad you "enjoyed" it and you've got me wanting to check out My Year of Rest and Relaxation even more now :)

I am vibing with this vlog. I think weird books may be one of my favorite genres, but I haven't read enough of them to decide. I love My Year of Rest and Relaxation--it's one of the books that I still think about and I read it years ago. I've hibernated in my time due to depression (without dosing myself though) so I could really relate to it--like wanting to pause the merry go round of your life because you are burnt out on it. Ottessa doesn't shy away from gross body descriptions in some of her books so I'm not sure if I'd like all of what she's written. I've heard good things about I'm a Fan. It's so funny how much you hated that one book: "Gives less than two Fs"🤣. I've hate read one book that I should have DNF'd. I'll never do that again. I liked 'Convenience Store Woman'. I feel like she was on the spectrum and the people around her didn't get her or let her be herself.

I'm so glad you loved My Year of Rest & Relaxation! I read it when it came out and it was one of my favorite books of that year. It is so weird and also, like you said, very sad in how it is basically about depression and wanting to sleep your life away. Also, I really enjoyed Earthlings, but I only gave it 4 stars as there were so many trigger warnings and the end was a tough read. I really enjoy Murata's writing though as I loved Convenience Store Woman and her short story collection, Life Ceremony, is really good as well!

I thought Perfect Days by Rafael Montes was disturbing in a similar way Earthlings was. Not the same theme and not as many trigger warnings and maybe not as completely unhinged. YES EARTHLINGS! I really am glad you read both Earthlings and Convenience Store Woman. Because I think they are two sides of the same coin: in Convenience Store woman we see a main character that doesn't fit in with the norms of society, but finds a way to be a part of the system. In Earthlings the main character is similar to the one in Convenience Store Woman, but this main character can't conform to any part of the larger system so where does that leave her? And I think this book explores a dramatic interpretation of a character that just can't fit in to society and what factors might impact that. 5⭐️ for me too, both are an all time favorite for me.

I gave MYoRaR and Boy Parts 5 stars, and I gave Earthlings 4.25 - I really loved Earthlings, but I personally gave Convenience Store Woman 5 stars. I didn't find any of them weird personally, disturbing and unhinged are words I would use instead, but one more rec for you: Jawbone by Monica Ojeda. Very disturbing, very dark, toxic female friend group, some interesting nods to Internet/creepypasta lore, I don't think it's weird but it's gonna F you up almost like Earthlings did, for sure!

For round two you should definitely check out Paradise Rot by Jenny Hval and Wetlands by Charlotte Roche! Paradise Rot is a queer horror about a girl who goes away to university and ends up staying in an old warehouse as a dorm. Her and her roommate end up having a very INTENSE AND UNSETTLING relationship lol. And Wetlands is about this girl who sort of rebels against hygiene? She goes out of her way to use gross public toilets and conducts sexual "experiments" on herself, and one day she ends up giving herself a very serious intimate shaving wound that requires surgery. Both books are seriously weird and fucked up and I'd love to hear what you think about them!

Hey Gabby:) Glad your reading month was good; so was mine too. In the car this morning I finished Helen Castor's Joan of Arc, the story of the teenage girl who led the French armies against the English until she was captured and burnt at the stake. After that her ashes were scattered in a river but eventually the next French king recognized her special qualities and started the revision that led to her becoming a saint. It was without a doubt a weird but very full life. Thx great to see you again!

i hated earthlings, the way it beats you over the head with the messages (conform bad! work bad!) felt so childish, especially sandwiched between scenes that were just there for shock value. characters were bland with zero personality and there was no deeper insight on the messages/themeing. it felt like it was written by an angsty teenager who wanted to make the adults around her go 'wow this is so weird!'.

I mostly read non-fiction but one novel that I've read that I thought quite weird, although almost tame compared to some you have described, is the classic "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov. It has been many years since reading it but I remember having mixed and strange feelings about it. You are probably familiar with its story and a lot has been written about through the years. A few movie versions also. Just a comment from someone of an older generation. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

Ooh I’ve read and loved 3 of these! Excited to see if you enjoy them as well, and also find out about the other one that I haven’t heard of. Edit: I also wouldn’t consider any of the 3 that I read weird. I’d call them unusual, and sad girl books.

The weirdest book EVER is “The Hike” by Drew Magary. Amazing. No one ever talks about this book and it’s one of my all time favs. Please Please read it

I don’t blame you for DNF’ing boy parts, that sounded awful. The glamorization of drug use is stupid & I don’t see what’s so edgy about taking a photo of an underage boy. That’s just disturbing & then to go on & continue to take photos like that… ugh I loved my year of rest & relaxation too!

One of the most interesting things about Japanese translations that I’ve noticed so far is that I’m always expecting a moral, theme, or clear message. Then…there…isn’t really! It’s almost like the story should speak for itself. I’m realizing that must be a Western thing…wanting a moral spoon fed to us

Boy parts sound pretty bland and I don’t really go for books with drugs and sniffing drugs it’s a turnoff completely

I feel so validated by the fact that you dnfed Boy Parts. I hate this book SO MUCH, I'm glad I sold it so it doesn't stare at me from my bookshleves anymore. **** SPOILERS FOR BOY PARTS BELOW **** The weirdness of this book is that she does end up killing one of the men she has photographed. Then she chops him to pieces and leaves the parts of his body in various locations around the world as to not get caught by police. Then the story is about her downward spiral into obsession of getting caught and what not. And by the end it is also not clear whether or not Irina actually killed this boy or just dreamed it up. She has a weird hallucination/dream/dissociation thing going on that stems from her past trauma or something. Anyway, I hated the book, it's been 4 or so years since I've read it and I still hate it passionately, it's probably the worst book I've ever read.

The weirdest book I've ever read was "Cows"... I don't necessarily recommend it BUT if you did want to read it just know its a wild ride! "Girls and their horses" by Eliza Jane Braier (same author as good rich ppl that you liked) is kind of ridiculous so if you wanted to do a video on the most ridiculous thrillers I'd vote that one. Which that would be a good video idea. See how ridiculous you like your thrillers lol.
