It goes completely contrary to the characters' ideals. Farming requires tenderness, toil, study and preparation to create life, for yourself and others. This is the twofold gaze "Perception and Sight". Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and close things as if they were distant. It is important in strategy to know the enemy's sword and not be distracted by insignificant movements of his sword. You must study this. The gaze is the same for single combat and for large-scale strategy. It is nescessary in strategy to be able to look to both sides without moving the eyeballs. You cannot master this ability quickly. Learn what is written here; use this gaze in everyday life and do not vary it whatever happens." -Chapter 2, The Water Book, The Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi

I’ll say it. It’s better than Berserk. Yknow why? Because it’s real, it’s fucking real. Everyone in their life has something they want to do, everyone has some sort of hobby or goal they want to achieve. And the only way to get that, is through suffering. Through getting up and trying again and learning from every experience. As a Catholic, I’d say the closest thing to my faith might be Buddhism, because we both recognize that suffering is an important part of how we as people become better. Weather by suffering alone or suffering together, by the process of coming out of that experience, you have the ability to become better or worse. It’s up to you to become better.

I finished Vagabond some weeks ago. Seeing takezo's eyes changing while aging and reaching his final form, after meeting takuan, kojiro, inshun and so on.... what a journey. Inoue is my fave mangaka for a reason

I remember reading this manga like 10+ years ago? And then it suddenly went on hiatus and I forgot all about it until I saw this post lol, it was an awesome manga the author does this thing like suddenly ending his work when its on its peak like slam dunk

I just "finished" Vagabond, read all the manga and the exhibition chapter yesterday and I have no words to express myself. Vagabond doesn't feel like a regular manga, it's like an experience. It addresses themes such as loneliness, self isolation, depression, personal growth, spirituality, beliefs, and so on... Musashi goes through so much and you feel like you are right there or you are actually him; I don't even need to talk about the artwork, one of the most if not the most beautiful I've ever seen. I'm going to get Musashi tattooed on myself next month to remember the journey I had reading this manga and to never forget the message(s) this masterpiece taught me. Stay safe everyone.

I’m reading Berserk right now. I’m so excited to read Vagabond. Part of me almost wants to read Vagabond more, but I’m trying to really take my time with Berserk. I feel like it’s changed my life in so many ways. Yes it’s often a depressing manga, but it’s also incredibly motivating. Some of the terrors in it are real, some not. Regardless, Guts experiences some of the most terrifying and awful things. Yet he keeps going. There’s so many hard truths that are oddly uplifting to me. The commentary on rage and anger is amazing. Idk why I’m talking about Berserk. If Vagabond is even close to as impactful, I’m so excited for it. I’m also particularly excited because it’s inspired by a real person because history is very interesting to me. I like the realism of the art as well. Can’t wait to read it. Also, Monster was life changing too.

I've not read this manga yet but by reading the comments i derived: 1)this is one of the best philosophical art pieces out there with concepts that'll make me rethink life 2)so that i won't regret it, i should make the first read of this manga a memorable experience 3)if you have not read this you are without a doubt, definitely missing on something that can change your life !!!!

For me is more like the Transcendent Cat, this story changed and SAVED my life, is more than a manga for me, is a philosophical treatise. And just like with Stoic books, i reread all the time to not lose my sanity and live life in a more healthy/productive way (as oppose to self destructive). Usually when i spend much time without reading them i revert back to old habits and start to feel powerless and sorry about myself.

I think outside of the storytelling and art the most moving part of Vagabond is the emotions the author is able to convey through the characters eyes in a static black and white drawing.
