I loved the little details in the book : like when cadence mentioned the scarf she sent Johnny and he was confused like when mireen did not get her emails like when will thought she was mad on the phone and hung up on her once she mentioned mireen like when gat never visited her or responded to her when she was away like when that little kid over the phone told her about the ghosts in the house like when her realising that her aunts have started hugging each other like when her mother scolded her for taking ut the boat, but she thought that was not true as she was with mireen on that boat. like when gat called himself Heathcliff like when mireen wanted her to read those emails that she wrote in lady's room, and disappeared afterwards like when they all start getting scared that she will fall from that cliff side they were jumping of off, they were scared for her because she was the only one of them who could actually die from that like when her mother told her to stop asking about summer fifteen because she was tired of reliving that day like the time she was with her Granda in his new clairemont and she asked about her grandma's embroidery and the decorations and ivory statues that her grandparents had brought, and her grandad outright screamed at her. like all the other little details I am sure I missed.

also, there is so many words sush as "fire, ashes" there are use as metaphore. when mirren don't wanna eat with the rest of the family, or when one of the twins read a book about ghost. This was such a good writing

I was the same way, I was kinda board in beginning, confused in the middle and was depressed in the end. But over all I’m glad I made my self finish. Something I realized as I just sat and thought about the book after I finished was the “were” part of the title, it’s past tense and I actually kinda love it. It’s a detail that doesn’t mean much until u finish the book. Over all I gave it a 4.5 out of 5.

SPOILER WARNING! okay so I read this book while watching this video and it was super nice to hear all your opinions on it. I totally agree that the book was a bit slow in the beginning (parts 1-3) but I feel like parts 4 and 5 made up for it. And the plot twist was kind of cheap, but I think the reason it was so good was because it was the least expected twist I could personally think of. When I was reading part five and we found out that they were all dead the whole time and just in her head, I sobbed because I could not imagine the pain that she felt when she finally realized. Overall, I rated this book a solid 3.6 stars. And I would definitely recommend it to people because of the plot twist.

Just read it. Definitely should’ve DNFd it - it might’ve saved a few tears. Actually, saved multiple heartbreaking gut wrenching sobs. And a few piles of tissues too. Maybe a few pieces of random old clothing I haven’t worn in years from my sons that I had to keep silent from my family. I cry for Mirren, Johnny, Gat, tipper, Harris, Clairmont, Fatima, Prince Philip, and cadence. I cry the most for cadence.

I think she went in the water because of how much shock she felt. she felt like it was her fault and it was too much to digest. she felt like she should've died in the fire too. therefore she went into the water to drown herself because of how much she hated herself for that.
