I thought Homegoing was good, but not great. Salvage the Bones, on the other hand, is simply outstanding. I think it's one of the finest novels of the 21st century. It's the book our grandchildren are going to be studying in school. Thanks for this.

Just finished Transcendent Kingdom an hour ago... Yup. Gyasi did it again. It hit me in all the feels... The conflict between religion/mental illness and science.. Mmm 😢 Also.. I'm glad it was not the same structure... Still haven't gotten to Jemsyn Ward yet.. 🤦🏾♀️ Just put that Alyssa Cole book on hold.. You had me at thriller

So, so, so excited for Yaa Gyasi's newest book. I loved "Homegoing" too, so I'm excited to pick it up and also see what you think! If you're looking for another sweet fluffy romance this coming month - I just finished "Get a Life, Chloe Brown" and thought it was very cute. I was grinning the whole time! I've also heard good things about the sequel, but I'm still on hold for it at my library. Great wrap-up as always xx

Haha I don’t know if it’s a good thing that you couldn’t care less about the romance in a romance book, or if it’s telling on the story writing capabilities of the author lol. Loved the video!

I feel the exact same about when no one is watching! I have no idea what it’s about but Alyssa Cole wrote it, I don’t care what it’s about, I’m hype! Unfortunately I’m staying in a hotel for a week and I’m way too easily scared to read a thriller or horror in a hotel room alone lol
@LEFTONREAD4 жыл бұрын
😩😩😭 I am not alone! I was like “why didn’t you look this up before pressing record?” That is such stan behavior, but hey I am def a fan girl over Alyssa Cole though so it doesn’t matter. Also LOL I would be scared to read it then too.

I don't know if you saw the essay that Jesmyn Ward wrote about her husband passing. It was heartbreaking and beautiful. I've never read her, but I've got my library requests in for Salvage the Bones and Sing Unburied Sing.
@LEFTONREAD4 жыл бұрын
WecanthearyouCandy yes I did! So crazy you mention that, in the raw footage I talked about it, but decided to cut it out because... yeah. She uses words to express so much, in a way that cuts to my bones. Sigh. I LOVED Sing Unburied Sing, even more than salvage the bones.

Very nice wrap up as always! You make me want to try romance again! UGH! LOL Soooo... I just finished Transcendent Kingdom and it was beautiful! I'm not going to lie, it was hard to get into it because I still had Homegoing on the brain but about a quarter through, I really got into it! In addition to the struggles Gifty has with her mother and brother, Gyasi really captures the struggles many millennials have with their religious upbringing. (And that's all I'm going to say...) You should read Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam ( one of the Exonerated Five); it is a YA book in verse about a teenage boy who was falsely accused of a crime and sent to prison. Very well written! Also, I enjoyed Take the Mic, which a shorty story collection about teens and resistance, Symone Sanders' No, You Shut Up, The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi and Our Time is Now by Stacey Abrams. Happy reading!
@LEFTONREAD4 жыл бұрын
Tiffany Tillman 1. You should so try romance again! If you do, start with Alyssa Cole a princess in theory ☺️☺️! 2. I am like a third of the way through Transcendent Kingdom since recording... and a lot of thoughts! Love that it’s heavily faith balanced. So relatable. 3. THANK YOU for the recs! Hadn’t heard of the new Zoboi not Take the mic ✍🏾✍🏾✍🏾

I'm very excited for Transcendent Kingdom! I didn't even realize it was out yet. My library doesn't have it. But, I might just buy it on the strength of Homegoing. I did decide to get on the library waiting list for The Vanishing Half. But it's > 6 months!!! I am probably going to cave and just buy the book. Right now I'm forcing myself to stick to some of my unread books on the shelf. I had a couple of "I'm sad about Covid" online book shopping sprees over the summer and I bought more than I read. Trying to catch up now so I can buy some more books without feeling guilty. Do you use the library a lot? Do you like to own books that you really like so you can re-read them, or are you not much of a rereader? Currently (Covid times), I only get E books from the library, and I don't really like E books. I'm old school and like paper books. Plus I like to keep most of the books I read. I know if I wasn't a big re-reader I'd get more from the library. Can't wait to hear what you think of When No One is Watching (spoiler free I hope!)
@LEFTONREAD4 жыл бұрын
I like physical copies too! Gives me time away from the screen. I have been reading more ebooks solely because of COVID, but if I really want a book or if I read a book and it’s good and one I would re read, I buy it. So to answer your question I use the library A LOT, and I also buy books (not as often) if I plan to re read. I bought vanishing half after reading my copy because I loved it that much! I’m reading Transcendent now and am really like it! 3/4s through.
