Omg with Night Circus I had the exact same thoughts. I also did not quite understand what happened and didn't quite believe their relationship but the entire buildup was SOOO good and I was so disappointed with how it all fleshed out because I loved the entire world and was so enthralled until the end.

There’s been a fabulous series on BBC 2 called Novels that shaped our world. Queenie was featured in the second episode. It’s well worth watching the series

I’d been hesitating on Queenie because it was sold as a black Bridget Jones. I am not overly fond of Bridget Jones. But this made me much more inclined to pick it up! The Night Circus and The Starless sea are both very top 2 favourite books, but I will admit both books had an ending that left me a little underwhelmed. She builds amazing worlds and builds up this amazing story with a bit of a meh ending. I am able to overlook it but I can say I understand that view.

I 100% agree with your take on "The Night Circus", it fell flat for me in the end also. I so wanted to love this book the writing was so beautiful and I loved the idea of this unique and wonderful "Night Circus". I just very recently read "The Starless Sea". I won't comment until you review it, but I will say this much, Erin Morgenstern really writes beautifully.

I keep picking up, and then putting down again, the Sarah Hall stories. I really liked your thoughts on it so many it is time to pick it up and give it a whirl. I thought Queenie was great, quite tricky and confronting in parts, brilliant for it though. I read The Starless Sea and enjoyed it, I've always been told I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, The Night Circus which has always made me a bit daunted by it, sounds like its pretty good. Maybe next Autumn.

Queenie has been at the top of my TBR for so long and I'm hoping to get to it very soon, especially now after hearing your review! Great wrap-up, Lauren! :)

I read The Night Circus quite a few years ago now, but I felt the same way about the ending. I really loved the book all the way through. Thought the world was beautifully described and wasn't sure where it was going. I was expecting the ending to just destroy me and be broken at the finish but instead I felt a bit...eh. It was like I was reading a different book. I am still looking forward to reading The Starless Sea.

I felt exactly the same about Virgin Envy, I wondered if Invisible Women by Caroline Criado-Perez would be a good non-fiction choice for next year? Or something by Maya Angelou? I loved Queenie too and read Everyday Sexism in November which was amazing but heartbreaking.

Queenie is probably my favourite character driven book I have read this year... I just think it's so so rich . Did you know Queenie is being adapted by channel 4? So looks like there will be a series being put into the world in the next year or two 🤞👑❤️

I was also a little disappointed with night circus. I liked the idea, I just found it didn't pull me in, it felt very superficial and needed more plot/drama, I wanted to know the characters more, and needed more development of the love story, I just didn't believe it, and it just didn't take me to where I felt it should. Something was missing for me

I'm about halfway through Virgin Envy, but I also expected it to be less academic than it is, so it's slow going with a busy work schedule, moving and then Christmas on top of it all. The topic is really interesting though, and I would definitely like to read more about it in the future. I also almost picked up Queenie when I was in London last week, but it was just about the only time during the whole holiday I managed to exercise some willpower. Not sure if I'm pleased with myself for that though. 🤣

I’ve heard several others talk about Queenie, but you are the first to get me interested in reading it. “Black Bridget Jones” sounds like an elevator pitch and it’s good to hear you go a little deeper than that - and without too many spoilers, huzzah! Hope you guys are having a joyful season (sorry - brain cramp - can’t remember your hubbie’s name - just that he doesn’t want be a lemon...)

Reading the night circus at the moment. The story is OK but jumps about and to many characters have little background. Will finish it but not my favourite book I've read this year. Have read the starless sea as well. Very descriptive of the world you are taken into. Enjoyed it slightly more than I have the night circus.

I have for so long felt as if I was one in a million who did not love the night circus. I did not hate it by any means but it was sold to me as the new Harry Potter and I was exceedingly disappointed by it. I felt the world building was bogged down by the narrative exposition. And although the Marco Celia love story was sweet it did not feel epic for me. I am currently reading the starless sea and I won't lie to you i am not loving it. But I am only a quarter way through it. Similarly I am not enjoying it as much as people said I would.

I loved the atmosphere and world-building of The Night Circus but the story itself I found very slow moving and I found the characters very flat. I liked the writing but wasn’t invested in what was going on. And as you say, the ending fell apart.

I strongly disliked "The Night Circus" when I read it about 7/8 years ago. I only finished it because It was the pick of the book club I was in at the time. In addition to everything mentioned, I didn't enjoy the world building, didn't care aabout most characters and was very bored with long descriptions (..and that is coming from someone who loved Les Miserables). The book had a profound impact on me though. It totally put me off the fantasy genre. Only now with my recent discovery of booktube I am starting to revise my position and maybe give fantasy another chance.
