This requires full cooperation. They have to map each person's brain and then compare the patterns. The part with the lying detector may end up being very usable or maybe it will fail because of the enormous diversity in our brains. So...I wouldn't be scared about this just yet.

+Keenaid2 Renowned futurist, Ray Kurzweil, said that in the next hundred years, between 2000 and 2100, we would see the equivalent of *20,000 years* worth of technological development that would be experienced if technology were to develop at a linear pace, rather than the exponential pace that we are actually seeing. Just think about that for a good minute.

They can see activity in specific regions of the brain, and perhaps see that a region of the brain heavily associated with the word 'dog' is lit up and make the assumption that you are thinking about dogs. However, at present (and perhaps forever) there is no way for them to connect that information to tell what exactly you are thinking at a given moment. Why? First of all, with the roughly 100,000,000,000 neurons in the brain, the 1,000-10,000 synapses per neuron, and the numerable receptors at each synapse, the best computers and code-crackers in the world aren't going to be able to decipher what exactly is going on; and the first group who claims to have 'solved' it will find that their 'solution' is filled with errors and inconsistencies. There are numerous other reasons which I'm simply not going to go into to avoid giving any pointers to these assholes.

Quite so. Actually, the US was founded on the principle of inalienable rights, that could be violated by men in power, but were enshrined in the constitution as inviolate by law. The problem is, the government no longer takes the constitution seriously. Brain scanning would invade privacy, as does wiretapping, etc. It could/should be illegal. But given recent history, illegality doesn't seem to deter the government anymore.

Those are good points. A false memory that someone truly believes probably would show up as true. Not only that, more research may show that there are countermeasures, that is, ways to train yourself to "think" in ways that would deceive the machine.

Exciting stuff! It's good to see science is slowly making progress! However, they still have a ways to go as long as they think, "It reveals the essence of what it means to be a person. All of those kinds of things that define us as human beings are brain patterns." Oops! O well, they'll get it eventually.

We are evolving into a telepathic race, like the vast majority of intelligent, space-faring races in the universe. Amazing. Startling, a little scary. I did'nt think we would achieve technological (and later, ORGANIC) telepathy in my lifetime. We are entering into a STAR TREK AGE, right now!!! Very cool.

some people are self deceiving, they dont have coherent thoughts, their subconscious thinks something else than their conscious. their reported feelings, feelings displayed in the face and their behaviour contradict. For such people, the question what they are thinking is meaningless. It simply doesnt compute.

Hmmmmm, I saw this when it first aired over seven years ago. Haven't heard a thing about it, since. Did Just succeed in developing a device capable of reading the human mind, and then the government bought this technology to use it for its own purposes while keeping this capability secret at the same time? Or did Just either fail or is his research and development going much slower than he anticipated? I would luuuv to know the answers to these questions.....

@Wyrmling12 I am pretty sure corporations could find a way. Anyway, I think I found a fault with this experiment. They showed pictures and told them to think about what they saw so the neural correlate for each thought could be found. How do they know the neural correlate would be the same if they were looking at an actual hammer (or any other thing they were shown) as it was when they looked at the lined computerized-image? Do you or anyone know what I am getting at?

Why can't they take people like child molesters, murderers, rapists, and study their brains and see what causes theses sickos to do the evil things that they do? What did you feel about this when you researched it? Freaks me the heck out! Like Blade Runner, with his pupil reading and all. Everyone in the world, their brains all light up in the same areas. Totally weird. You could then, wire us up and arrest us, reprogram us... I saw a three node headpiece as the future of this. Control mouse brains by flashing a light in its eyes. How far away is Uncle Sam? Probably been in use for 10 yrs. Just like police can use everyone in country cell phone cams, their web cams, bank atm cameras... Every single possible camera can look for and find you! Not a criminal but sounds like all the horror/ sci fi books from 50's forward!
