Outstanding review of Firebrand. I am a regular viewer of your channel, but this is my first comment. I'm writing from the San Francisco area. I will definitely watch this film and feel so well-informed now as I do so. Thank you for your research in all your videos and the clear and precise presentation of it. 📽👑

I’ve watched it twice and really enjoyed it. I liked how everything looked cold and dingy and grubby. I thought the hair, makeup and costume design was a breath of fresh air opposed to the usual “glamorous” Tudor portrayals. Thank you Dr Kat for reviewing the film.

I’ve been really interested in recreating Tudor fashion for the last for few years and I would be willing to bet the costume designer on this film consulted with the Tudor Tailor authors, Ninya Mikhaila and Jane Malcom-Davies… this is the Tudor costuming we deserve.

I really loved this film. The costuming was beautiful especially compared to what we usually see in historical fiction films. Having the costuming and set design help anchor me in a sense of time and place is for me, more important than strict historical accuracy to the events. I’m not there to Learn History, I’m there to be entertained! I’ve read and watched so many variations of the Tudor stories dramatized, so I’m not bothered by hand waving away a little artistic liberty. I don’t think I would be as interested in real history as I am today, had I not first found a love of the fiction. I also think they did a wonderful job of maintaining a real sense of suspense and walking on eggshells around Henry. It felt almost like I was watching a horror movie, with this constant, pervasive sense of dread. Maybe that darker lighting you talked about did help with that vibe.

I saw the movie when it came out in the US back in June, so it’s been awhile since I saw it, but I really enjoyed it. I knew going in that it was fictional, so I don’t mind those departures. What I think they really nailed was the vibe at court. There was such a tense undercurrent, everyone walked on eggshells, just trying not to set the monster off. I could very much see it being like that. I can’t wait to hear Dominic’s thoughts once he gets them in order! 😂

I was expecting a film that portrayed Katherine Parr and Henry in a historically accurate manner. Silly me! For the reasons you mention, of course, but also some things that I noted while I was watching the film. I had an especially hard time with the very inaccurate death scene. Katherine was not present, and of course she didn't kill Henry. I doubt that Katherine would have gone into the woods to meet Ann Askew. In her position, I think such a clandestine act would have been impossible. Katherine was never pregnant while she was married to Henry, so naturally there was no miscarriage. She was never arrested or in prison at all, and as you said, certainly would not have been in those terrible conditions. The performances were very good, and I agree with you that the costumes were excellent. But for me, the glaring historical inaccuracies spoiled the film for me. I would not recommend it to anyone who wouldn't already be aware of the egregious liberties that the writers took with history. This film would give the average person a completely wrong idea of the events of Katherine's life. She was interesting enough without the blatant alterations of the facts. I was very disappointed that the producers played so fast and loose with history, while claiming to portray real people and events.

I enjoyed the film. It was beautiful to look at. I also enjoyed fanfiction, which is basically "what if?"... which is what this film is. I grew up in an abusive, violent home. Much of the time I escaped into fantasy, otherwise I would not have survived. I understand this film to be a character study of Catherine. Sometimes we saw history, sometimes we saw her fears, sometimes we saw her dreams. It invites us to put ourselves in her shoes and let our imaginations and feelings run wild. I don't watch films as a history lesson. There are more documentaries and books on the Tudors than I could consume in a lifetime. I appreciate art inspired by history too.

Definitely fanfiction. I thought Vikander seemed too young to play Catherine, and Jude Law wasn't physically revolting enough, even with all those prosthetics. Very good performance from him, though, and the costuming was great. Thanks, Dr. Kat.

Absolutely agree! I never go into any sort of historical fiction, on the page or on the screen, expecting much accuracy. I think it’s a bit silly to frankly - if you want historical accuracy, read history or watch a documentary! Fiction is telling a story, which must serve the narrative primarily, the historical events secondarily.

I have yet to watch firebrand but actually listening to. It’s a great preview. I love hearing the reality and it sort of bothers me that there is so much historical fiction going on. It’s a story the real story and the real story is what matters. I think Catherine Parr was an amazing woman, and she surely knew how to survive and that’s another way which she showed her high intelligence.♥️

Thank you for a thoughtful review. I really enjoyed the movie. I saw it more of a character study of a corrupt, tempestuous king and he people around him who are forced to live on a knife edge to keep their heads. I didn't mind that they took liberties with the actual history, though there's always the fear that viewers will assume that what they are seeing is the truth. 🏰 🎥

Thank you for this review! This video is the first I’ve seen of yours and I will be subscribing. I love the detail you went into for this film! 🎥 I watched it a few weeks ago and I have mixed thoughts. I love the detailing in the costumes and I really enjoy the acting choices, just as you say the leads are really able to make their characters come alive and feel so real! The film really disappointed me when they had Catherine arrested, and as you detail, have her thrown in a cell almost naked to rot, before she then is brought before Henry and kill’s him. I very much can and do appreciate artistic licence (I didn’t mind the creation of friendship between Catharines and Anne) in a film as things for a majority of reasons can’t always follow the full historical path - but I feel there was still able to be a version of the movie where Catharine was detained in her royal apartments; scared, fearful, alone from her trusted advisors and servants - under arrest but as Queen. Before then still artistically killing Henry. I feel that would have still worked and given the film 🍿 that shock ending. However for me as a history and Tudor lover, the decision to have Catherine thrown in a cell freezing and such just took me straight out of the film, as did the mention of the Pole family as you mention. I did love the locations and I didn’t mind the darker feel they had with locations and interiors, for me it felt like someone was spying, creating an unsafe atmosphere and showing that Catharine was caged and trapped just as the birds were. I loved that this film has put a light on Catharine as so much of Henry VIII’s life in modern telling focuses really between him and Anne Boleyn. I also as a dog lover, really enjoyed the dogs they had throughout the movie. Thank you for your review! 🎉

I'm interested in seeing the film now that you have reviewed it I must say I have found the recent historical films released by major studios totally lacking in any kind of merit either historically or as regards acting or dialogue So I was surprised that your review seems to have been generally favorable and I will watch it on your recommendation just on the costumes alone But I DO find it irritating that film producers find it necessary to depart from the facts! Here we have a story so compelling we are still re-enacting it 500 years later! Why in the world do we need to gild the lily here?? One would think there's some sort of copyright on History - since absolutely NOBODY seems to be able to tell the tale and stick to what REALLY happened!! Would it actually be so bad if people were able to learn actual history from movies?? This is the sort of thing that makes me appreciate your content all the more! Thank you!

I think a lot of historical movie designers are afraid to make things really colorful. We’ve gotten so used to “history is brown, gray, and washed out” as a culture. Even nonthrillers will tend towards a muted palette- just look at the Les Mis adaption from a decade ago (and that was a *musical*!) at least it seems like the costume department was able to design clothes that were accurate to the period. No beach waves at court here! 👑🪡 Still, I eagerly await the Duke of York’s opinion- I’m sure he’ll have some fascinating takes on the imagery.😆

While Catherine’s religious zeal is realistic, portraying her as killing Henry VIII is absolutely ridiculous. Even if she had had any such idea - and there is no historical evidence that she did - she was living in another palace and never went near Henry for many weeks before he died.

It looks like the costumes will be worth the watch in this movie. On being historically accurate, we are not gonna get that by the look of it. It is set in historical (Tudor) times and stars historical people, but it is primarily a story for entertainment, not a documentary. Like other people with a keen interest in history it used to bug me when films had totally made up people or plots etc., but maybe we just have to accept that - like a novel or a totally fiction book - these days. This review has definitely spurred me to very much want to see the movie. But to avoid any disappointment, I won't expect it to be "history" good and pure. Thanks for a good review ✔️👍

MINOR SPOILER: Drawing from what was said about the actress’ controlled panic, there’s a scene where Catherine humiliates a courtier Henry is flirting with by having her sing and at one point she barks for the girl to “Stop laughing!” and you can hear this rage simmering just below in her voice. It was a great moment of her emotions getting the best of her after all the stress she’s been under. It really stuck with me. (Unfortunately I did find the film to be otherwise kind of slow and was struggling to stay awake by the end, though I think this is because of my ADHD lol 🥴)

👑👑👑 i really loved the 'surprise' ending. A little part of me honestly wishes this was true, that she killed him whilst the ghosts of his other wives surrounded the bed, with a guest appearance from Anna of Cleeves. I enjoyed the lighting, from what I've read, Wolf Hall was filmed using the same technique of natural lighting. I loved the mention of Elizabeth fearing for her life, any mention of Anne Boleyn and i'm happy. I agree with henry's crown, I was thrown by the almost black bowler hat style of it - it was an odd choice!

Hi. I think the crown that Henry is wearing reminds me of the one in a Holbein painting. The painting is called King Henry VIII and the Barber Surgeons. The painting is pretty dark but the crown looks similar. Ps having seen and read other accounts of Henry I did find it strange about there wasn't more shown of Cranmer and his relationship with the queen. It also neglects the fact that Thomas Howard Duke of Norfolk was the one lingering in prison as the time of Genrys death not Catherine. Also Gardener was out of the King's favour having baulked at exchanging a land with the King as well as other matters. Lady Margaret Pole I think was executed in 1541. I know I could be wrong but it seemed a bit late for Henry to be getting rid of the Plantagenet Pole family so late in the day as 1546. I'm no expert but thought you might like to hear an opinion on some matters.
@ReadingthePast
@ReadingthePast 4 сағат бұрын
I have just zoomed in on that painting and you are spot on. I had never noticed there is clearly a brim of a hat under the crown. That’s definitely the one they were going for! I agree, it would have been good to have the separate Cranmer and Norfolk storylines included, but I can see how this might have been seen as confusing to the narrative and the pace they were aiming for. They really condensed time - it felt like those events happened over days or weeks rather than the years it actually was.

It never ceases to amaze me that filmmakers feel the need to tamper with any of the historical details of the Tutor era. All the necessary drama is already present; no additions or subtractions should be required. It also seems a bit of a non-sequitur to spend so much time and energy on the accuracy of the costumes, only to bash it all up by having Catherine kill Henry! Now I'm a bit torn. I would love to support this film so movie makers know there is a huge audience for historical drama, but on the other hand I'm really not interested in letting them think they can re-write history in such a fundamental way.🎥🎥🎥

I haven’t heard of this film, have no idea what she is talking about. Perhaps an introduction would be in order?

Reviews weren't great and while I can appreciate historical fiction, this seems more fiction than history. Curious to know your thoughts, Dr Kat

I deliberately didn't check any reviews so I wouldn't have my views clouded, I'm interested to read them now though...

I actually couldn't finish this movie. It just seemed over the top ridiculous and quite boring.

I just don't understand why people have to change known facts when they make a film or tv programme. I'm sure there are enough known facts to make an interesting and gripping film without distorting, or to be blunt, lying, about what actually happened, as much as we know from the written record.

I am not a fan of historical fiction; and, thanks to your review, I have no interest in seeing the film or reading the book. The idea that Catherine Parr would be shown killing Henry VIII is utterly ridiculous and slanderous. Thanks for a most informative review!

I'm torn between wanting to see Firebrand for the production and hating the gross historical inaccuracy of the plot.

If you are aware of the history, you may be "surprised" by this film? Red flag!

I've listened to the book. I would say it's quite compelling. But it does creep into "of course this noble woman would treat her incredibly poor servant as family and raise her rank" territory at points. I also that there is just enough actual history to make some people feel that this is actually how things happened.

I listened on Spotify. I liked it. Haven't seen the film yet because I've been too busy. Will probably watch over the winter. 🇨🇦
