It showed "Valor" if they died of old age they could only be accepted in the halls of Valhallah if they had a sword in their hands. This is why alot of Viking men and women were found with a sword or weapon in hand so they could join Odin and Thor at their table in the sacred halls of Valhallah. It wasn't a place for those who commit evil deeds. It was a place for warriors and fighters to rest after losing their lives on the field of battle. It was considered the highest of honors to fight and die in battle
