I wasn't prepared to like this movie, even with Spielberg doing it, because it was so different from the book. The book is one huge homage to all things 70's and 80's, especially games. It would have been impossible to film like the book and to pay for the rights for much of the content. I ended up overlooking the differences and respecting the story as a stand alone. Although, I really would have loved to see an adaptation on screen of the bit in the book from the arcade game Joust, which ate a bunch of my income in quarters at the mall.

The author of the book mentioned when he was writing it he was thinking a lot about Spielberg and once said that the only person who could make the movie was Spielberg because he would be the only one who had the juice to get as many tie ins as would be needed.... when he found out that Spielberg wanted to do it, he was incredulous. Spielberg said he tried to include other references as much as possible because he didn't want it to be seen as just about him.

I was born in 1971, and I gotta tell you, man, this movie seems like it was made just for me. I got every single reference. It's a love letter to gen X. We were primative little savages, but we were also on the cutting edge of technology. We had caveman context, but we also knew how cool shit was about to get. I remember having a conversation with my grandmother, and she told me she was born before television was invented. That blew my mind, because TV had always existed for me. But I was born before the internet was invented. And I can only imagine how shocking that must seem to people who had that shit their whole lives. I got your back, young people. Try and suck every second of joy out of life that you can. The next generation that comes along is gonna think you're just as lame as y'all think I am. Fist bump and good luck.

I was born in 1993 and I remember when computers were big and clunky. The first phone I remember we had was a wired home phone. Now phones can be computers and can get super thin and small, fitting into your pocket. We also have some robots doing basic tasks. I remember when I saw the Fly Board Air online and realized how fast technology was advancing. Even when I was a kid growing up in the 90s I never imagined I would live to see what we have now.

It's still so uncanny how that bedroom at the end looks like my bedroom or any one of my friends' rooms, from when we were kids. I just know, for instance, that there would be a stack of board games and puzzles in a small weirdly angled closet. And there would be a secret compartment in a window sill, or a floor board, or the wall, somewhere. And a box fan for the window in summer.

After seeing the SDCC ‘17 teaser, I got the book two days later and ended up going through it twice. Once for fun and the second to write down any movie and game references. The best thing I would recommend is to watch this film again with someone who is Gen x. I've watched this movie a dozen times with my sons and I still point out things that they don't know what it is. The spell that they reference is from the movie Excalibur. One of my favorites.

13:32 the distinction a lot of people forget is that you have to SEND IT into the wall, "as fast as we can, really put the pedal to the metal". People probably tried all sorts of things, including the back wall, but without risking every last coin you have in a potential wreck right at the start, it probably wouldnt have opened Either way, for as much of this movie is nostalgia bait and pop culture references, nobody imo is more deserving or could do it better than Speilberg

Spielberg insisted that they cut out a lot of the references to his movies in the book because he felt it would be weird and self-agrandizing. The book mostly has 80's pop culture references even though Hollaway died well into the 21st century and a lot of stuff became popular in the 90's until the 2020's, so there's a lot of more current references. They also cut out a lot of the D&D references for some reason, leaving a couple of Easter eggs you would have to sort of look for. Both the book and the movie are good. A lot of people used generic avatars because the better looking avatars were monetized. Wade had to use items he earned or looted during play. They had to pay or get permission from so many companies to use their IP and music.

The author of the book lives in Austin, TX just next door to my hometown. The Delorean in the book and the movie is an exact replica of the author’s real life car. You can even catch him driving around Austin in it.

Did you catch that the rifle Art3mis was using at the Distracted Globe was the M41A pulse rifle from Aliens? She also used the Lawgiver II pistol from Judge Dredd, and the Seburo Compact eXploder from Appleseed. The EM1 rail gun Aech was using on Planet Doom was the railgun from Eraser. Sorento also had the modified Taurus 85 from Firefly in a display in his office.

The book by Ernest Cline also has a sequel, Ready Player Two, and it is currently being developed for a film. Mark Rylance, who plays James Halliday, did two other films with Spielberg. His first role in The Bridge of Spies won Rylance the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and he then did the CG animated film The BFG with Spielberg. If you think there are a lot of pop culture references in the movie, double it (at least) in the novel. Ernest Cline wrote a screenplay before this one called Fanboys. It was about a group of friends trekking across the country to try and see Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace before it was released. It was a fun, low-budget movie starring Kristen Bell. It's funny you guys mentioned the Atari 2600 E.T. game, as Ernest Cline participated in the documentary movie about that game and the landfill it was supposedly taken to. The movie was Atari: Game Over. When Cline sold the novel, which almost immediately found itself in a bidding war for the movie rights, he celebrated his sudden wealth by buying a car. He bought a 1985 DeLorean DMC, which he then re-did to look like the Back to the Future time machine with a couple of other things, like a front red scanner like the KITT Trans Am from Knight Rider, and a siren like the Ghostbusters car. The plates for his DeLorean is ECTO 88. The car has been used for promotion for his stuff as well as his friends things like George R.R. Martin (author of the Game of Thrones books). He actually owns two DeLoreans now, but only one that is souped up to be the ultimate geek-mobile.

There's a lot of references to catch for those who are familiar with the games and movies so featured. For instance, in that final battle alone there was the one I think you spotted: namely Master Chief and the Spartans from Halo. There's the Battletoads from Battletoads. I'm pretty sure that the weapon that iRok was using was the Boner from Shadows of the Damned, and the bladed weapon that Sho used to cut off iRok's arm before he could take that final shot? That would be the Glaive from the movie Krull. I'd recommend you guys watch it again to see what else you guys can spot and recognize when you don't have to worry about upsetting your audience by pausing too much or rewinding too often.

Yes, the book is good. Yes, there are a lot more references to older pop-culture in the book than in the movie. Also, Ernest Cline (the author) wrote another book that doesn't get enough love and that is Armada. Similar in a lot of ways, but still worth a read (and a movie...). I've not read it, but he did write a sequel to RP1. Unsurprisingly, it is entitled: Ready Player 2.

As to the book I recommend it, since the movie deviated quite a bit due to restrictions with copyright. The book is also actual riddles you get to figure out along with Wade, and does not contain the race or the shining challenge. It has a lot more references to 80's (as well as older) games, music and movies.

The book is more focused on 1980s pop culture, but does feature some 90s references. But the book is longer and drastically different from the film (in the book, Wade figures out the First Key Challenge. The Third Gate Challenge ends up taking place almost one year after Wade found the first key due to the challenges being more difficult than they are in the book. For the film, the condensed the timeframe to about a week's worth of time from first key found to final challenge), in addition to it being better.

The book was really good. the contests were different and you had to act out certain movies to finish each challenge. Wade was the one sent to the loyalty center but he did it on purpose so that he could get into IOI's Network and steal all their info. Great book.

The book has more references than the movie. But then again the book has enough time to go through it, while the movie had to cram in a lot into a regular runtime. The book and the movie could be almost considered entirely different because of the entirely different story telling. It is worth a shot, but be prepared for reference overload. In terms of the that overload, it has the purpose of making you feel like the clues could be anywhere and anything.

I'm not a big reader but when some people say the book is better than the movie this is one of those situations but the movie definitely didn't disappoint😅 I've been waiting for the second film the scary part about this film in the novel itself is that we are so close to this actual type of lifestyle
