I'm a Catholic in Minnesota and I have both a curiosity and admiration for the Lutherans. The Lutherans have a "quietly joyful dignity" about them that I can't really describe. And I've met a lot of them (obviously living in Minnesota) from all sorts of walks of life: lower-income/education working class Lutherans, business owner Lutherans, academic Lutherans, higher income Lutherans, Lutheran pastors. I've met smart Lutherans, dumb Lutherans, polemical Lutherans, ecumenical Lutherans, ELCA, WELS, LCMS, LCMC, probably a few more. And they all have this "quietly joyful dignity." Not to say that Catholics, Anglicans, Orthodox, Reformed, evangelicals, or others don't also at times have this (they all have their own things that I admire and can extrapolate about), but the "quietly joyful dignity" is unique to the Lutheran. This Catholic is a friend of you Lutherans.

@@JohnnyRep-hz5qh I can see why you'd say that, but I'm in a fairly culturally German area in Minnesota, and Germany is about as Catholic as it is Lutheran (especially here, the split is down the middle). There's a distinction between the Scandinavian-American atheists, the German-American Catholics and the German-American/Scandinavian-American Lutherans. That's what I'm trying to pinpoint.

Very useful and timely as I've been learning about Lutheranism. I had been speaking with a pastor yesterday of a Lutheran church here in my town and I began to have some concerns when he said he doesn't get along with the ELCA he is a part of. I watched some of his services here on KZbin and it's totally Prosperity Gospel he's presenting each week. He's definitely doing his own thing. I can't imagine the ELCA would approve of how he's presenting the gospel. If so I'd be even more shocked.

Can you explain the differences between LCMS and Roman Catholic? I'm just trying to understand their divergence
@angiebee2225
@angiebee2225 Жыл бұрын
LCMS doesn't acknowledge a difference between sins - sin is sin is sin. Roman Catholics have categories of sins and say that some are forgiven in the Eucharist and others must be forgiven by a priest via confession and absolution. LCMS liturgy contains a confession and absolution section at the beginning of the service and individual confession is the exception rather than the rule. LCMS teaches that Mary is blessed above all women because of what God did through her and consider her exceptional, but do not pray to her or to any saints. Saints are positive examples of faith that are remembered throughout the year in recommended readings. Roman Catholics practice praying to the saints and to Mary. There's a lot of tradition about Mary in Catholicism that was not retained by the Lutherans. LCMS allows pastors to marry and enter service married. The Roman Catholic Church has retained the practice of requiring priests to take vows of celibacy. Historically, the selling of indulgences was a major reason Luther attempted to reform the Catholic church. While that is not something we hear a lot about today, it's still allowed by the RCC. A major difference is the Pope, of course. Both groups will say they believe in the real presence of Christ in communion/Eucharist, but they disagree on how that works. Lutherans observe or acknowledge fewer Sacraments. RCC upholds tradition and Scripture, and LCMS relies only on the Bible for doctrine, though they do look at historical understanding of passages and refer to various early church theologians. There are additional differences, but these are some of the easier ones to explain. There is still a lot held in common. Most faithful in both consider each other brothers and sisters in Christ with errors in their beliefs.

As a former Missouri Synod Lutheran, this used to irritate me to no end. The Wisconsin Synod is largely said to be "more conservative" due to their policy on female participation in ecclesiastical offices, on account of their hyper-Waltherian concept of the ministry being actualized in positions beyond the pastorate. If anything, a lower view of the ministry is more theologically-liberal. Perhaps the WELS used to be rigid in practice, nowadays that rigidity seems to be mostly theoretical. At my alma mater, CUW, we used to have seminarians from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary come to our chapel services on a somewhat regular basis.

@@jamesellis4035 Show me any verse in the Bible that says polygamy is a sin, or even forbidden. I know in the law of Moses God commands a brother to marry the wife of any brother that dies childless for the purpose of raising up seed in his brother's name, or be publicly condemned and ostracized, no exception for if they are already married. Why did God command polygamy in this case? So that the inheritance of Israel would stay in Israel, so that no non Isrealite could legally claim any part of the land of Israel when God restores the kingdom of Israel for the children of Israel's return. Besides, I'm quite happy being a member of the most charitable Christian church by far, the most devout Christian church, the most Bible literate, the wealthiest, even with giving so much to help the poor and needy all over the world, and the Christian church whose members live on average ten years longer than any other Christian churches. Not to mention among the fastest growing churches in the world, and usually the fastest growing church in the United States Of America, in spite of fulfilling the prophecies Jesus Christ gave about his true followers, "Ye will be hated of all men for my name's sake.", "Blessed are you when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my name's sake. Rejoice and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you." So why aren't the leaders of other churches evil spoken of? Unless they actually commit adultery or embezzlement or worse. It's like the devil doesn't care what they are doing. But Jesus Christ said," A good tree cannot produce evil fruit, neither can an evil tree produce good fruit." and "Ye shall know them by their fruit." Why would I leave the church that is producing good fruit, that every penny of charity goes to the poor and needy, and not to anyone running those programs, unlike every other church, that do charity for their own profit. Those running the charities in The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints are all volunteers, donating their time and their labor to help their neighbors around the world. But it did prophecy of the last days in the Old Testament that "Darkness will cover the earth, and deep darkness the minds of the people." This darkness is blinding the people from even looking at the truth, for their hearts are set on the things of the world. The items and ideas of the world. I will continue to repent daily, for only one man never sinned, and that's Jesus Christ. I will be like Paul, I will press towards the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, and I will not assume that I have already attained it or were already perfect. I will not be like King Saul, who the LORD said was a man after his own heart when he called him to be king of Israel, but rebelled against God, and at the end of his life was possessed by a demon. I will follow the church that teaches the Gospel that Paul gives in Hebrews 6: 1-2. I will follow the church that believes what Peter told the first converts in Acts chapter 2 when they asked "Men and Brethren, what must we do?" And Peter said that this instruction was for them, and their children, and all that are afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call. When you got the call, why did you turn away to answer the call of a man instead?

I’m a follower of Jesus Christ, which is why I refer to myself as Christian. It always was a mystery to me why Lutherans referred to themselves and not Christians…like I’m following Jesus, who is God in the flesh, worthy of my worship. I don’t know about referring to myself as a follower of another man. Is this something talked about and highlighted or brushed aside and ignored? Thank you for you time and videos. EDIT-also reference the lords supper being literal, in John 6:63 Jesus literally confronts the potential offensive nature of the matter and clearly states that what he said was not only a spiritual matter, but a matter a life and hence death. It’s not a literal eating flesh and drinking blood.

They do refer to themselves as Christians. Lets say you live in Dallas texas, saying you're from Dallas doesn't mean you're not also a Texan. Saying you're a Texan doesn't mean you're not also an American. Saying you're an American doesn't mean you're not also an earthling. Calling yourself a Lutheran is calling yourself a Christian because Lutherans are a subgroup of the group Christians.

As a Lutheran Pastor in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, I always refer to my members first and foremost as Christians, or believers, or saints. Their identity is rooted in their baptism into Christ. God has called them His children, and thus they are Christians. Lutherans do not worship Luther. Lutherans originally referred to themselves as Evangelicals in the 16th century simply to distinguish themselves from Roman Catholics. Rome used the term Lutheran as pejorative, but the name stuck.

Paul said to "Follow me as I follow Christ..." don't confuse the following of a man, or dividing unnecessarily as the Bible warns of, with having a label that describes a set of beliefs and identifies those who believe similarly. It just happens to be a name attached to someone else.

I believe that we tend to refer to ourselves as Lutheran to distinguish from other Chrisitan denominations. We do not want to be lumped into a common contemporary American misconception when Americans hear "Christian." We do have substantial differences with those with a Calvinist or Eastern Orthodox/ Roman Catholic base in their theology which goes back to Europe and the Reformation. Historically in the US, Lutherans were more of an ethnic church in the US because most of its members being of Scandinavian, German or Slavic origins and not the British Isles.

Early Lutheran’s and even many modern lutherans don’t like the title. It was not something they picked it was a name others placed onto them.

@@jamesellis4035 I love Lutherans ... but the doctrine is unbiblical. [1] Lutherans do not believe in free will with regard to salvation. [2] Lutherans pray the Rosary. [3] Lutherans believe in baptismal regeneration (that baptism is necessary for salvation) and that immersion is not necessary (just sprinkling). Therefore, they cannot believe we are saved by grace alone. [4] Lutherans ordain women. [5] Lutherans believe in the “real presence” that the Body and Blood of Christ are "truly and substantially present in, with and under the forms" of consecrated bread and wine (the elements), so that communicants eat and drink both the elements and the true Body and Blood of Christ himself, in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. [6] Some Lutheran churches are supportive of LGBTQ rights and ordain sodomites. [7] A Lutheran pastor (male and female) gives absolution of sins to his congregation. But surely, only God can forgive sins - because HE is the offended party, and only HE knows if the person is truly repentant? [8] Is it really more reverent to have men leading worship in frocks? Now I am being flippant! I suppose you could say they are followers of a man - rather than followers of Christ. And some say they are simply modified Roman Catholics. I would not say that - but there is certainly an aura of Catholicism in their faith and worship.
