The Uptown neighborhood of Chicago was known as "Hillbilly Heaven" in the 1950s and 1960s due to its large population of white Southern migrants, many of whom were from Appalachia. The neighborhood was a major stop on the "Hillbilly Highway", a route taken by Appalachians leaving the coal industry for a better life in the industrial north. It was downright strange.
