If I remember correctly, this was the last of the debates organized by the League of Women Voters. In 1988, the newly formed Commission on Presidential Debates would take over.

This debate and election was such a no brainer. "Do you want to re-elect Jimmy Carter through Walter Mondale?"

They speak slowly so that people can understand them today everybody wants to do everything in his speed it up fast pace way and I realize the world is much faster today that was then but that's all the more reason why we should slow down when we can

That's the entire national debt, not a deficit. The difference is pretty important.

The bottom line is a president should take tons of credit if something good or great happens during their time in office because he/she will be blamed if something goes bad. They should be judged on what happens during their term because it is on their watch. Give Reagan credit for the Cold War ending and bringing down the Soviets, and give Clinton credit for our best economic times in decades.

Can't get over Barbara Walters' 1980s fashion. She looks like a magicians assistant. I half expect her to take out a magic wand and pull a rabbit out of a hat.

I love Reagan, but this reason for not going to church.. might be another reason... but honestly, YOU DON'T WANT TO GO -- and that's why you don't go.

@Stlsportsfan158 But Carter was incompetent. Even if you like him as a person, he couldn't get anything right, which is something you have to do if you're and executive.

Walter Mondale: "Both President Reagan & I have a plan on raising taxes. The only difference is he won't tell you he will raise taxes, I just did.". Whoa, what a way to win over the American people, Mr. Mondale! No wonder Ronald Reagan won by a landslide again in 1984 (as he had done against Carter in 1980)!!! R.I.P., Mr. Reagan. You were our last great President, & we will never forget you!

I agree with you, he was highly intelligent, very thoughtful, humane and very decent. I never understood why some people thought he was no good. He seemed outstanding to me.

And remember: it was the League of Women Voters who refused to let independent candidate John Anderson participate in the first 1980 debate with Carter and Reagan. CNN -- then just a few months old -- took up on that opportunity by putting Anderson in. The story was that they would air the beginning of the Carter/Reagan debate live followed by Anderson answering the first question that was asked to the two candidates; then they would resume the debate on tape. It was a DISASTER, because the audio and video fell out of sync many times. The second debate would feature Anderson and Reagan, but it wouldn't be until 1992 (with the Commission on Presidential Debates now in charge) when Ross Perot would debate against George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

I like how reagan actually explains his plan for balancing a budget whereas both Obama and Romney don't explain they're plans to the public.

LOL!! Well look at the age of the candidates then. That is one thing, and also what has caused people to talk much faster is "air time". Pauses in air time is a loss of time period and today you are looked upon as incompetent if you talk slow. Talking faster makes you look competent...in a way.

Substitute the word "Republicans" with "Newt Gingrich". Except for those two years we didn't have a single balanced budget since the year 1970. At least during that decade the deficits were small, but in the 80's and the first half of the '90's fiscal discipline went out the window. Then comes W. Bush, who never saw a spending program he didn't like, and there was again no discipline. Now in the Obama years we see the same thing once more, but now we have no headroom to grow the debt.

@RichieEastside I have to agree, thanks to the Reagan economic policy's these are the reasons the USA has a strong economy and a very low unemployement rate. If we can just remove Obama and elect a true conservative such as newt or Palin we can save America from the communist Liberals. I believe Palin maybe the next Reagan indeed, she does stand for the core conservative principles on Family Values.
