Building a delay macro with a tape effect in Reaktor 6 Primary. This is a great, easy effect, with the only tricky part being setting up the feedback. Delay is used to create a whole bunch of effects including chorus and flangers, but, in this video, we'll just be getting started with a Single Delay and a Low-Pass Filter.
This is the seventh video in a series of projects to get you started in Reaktor 6 "Primary." Reaktor has a number of ways that you can work (including Reaktor Blocks, Reaktor Core), but Reaktor Primary can be a good place to start in creating your own synthesizers.

The only thing missing from this tutorial is how to tempo sync, but I think I can figure it out from how you tempo synced LFOs. Big thumbs up on all your tutorials!!!

Having completed watching your Reaktor Primary video series, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you. I've read the several Reaktor manuals, and they are highly informative. However, your Reaktor Primary presentation makes development more accessible. I was wondering if you considered developing a similar tutorial series on Reaktor 6 Core. No need to get into the DSP math; there are plenty of tutorials on that subject. Instead, I would love to see your practical and clear exposition of Reaktor 6 Core development. Thank you.

Thanks for your kind message! I'm glad to hear that these videos were useful to you. I don't have plans to dig into Core at the moment, but that might be a good idea for the future. I don't really use Core much in my current workflow, instead doing that kind of programming in Pd, Max/MSP, or Kyma. I'm not sure there's a real reason for that other than my own experience, though, so it might be nice to explore at some point soon!

@@SimonHutchinson I have not worked with PD & Kyma and have limited experience in Max/MSP, which is an entirely different beast. Looking forward to a Reaktor 6 Core series should you decide to undertake this effort. Thank you.

It's good. That said, we should remember that, as with a lot of these synthesis environments, it's what you do with it. Pd, Max/MSP, Kyma, Supercollider, etc. can all sound great if you find the sweet spots!

@@SimonHutchinson I agree, but there is something in reaktor that sounds warm and exciting.

Hi Simon, I would be interested in learning how to add modulators (lfo, env,....) that can be assignable to anything. I got an idea with a switch but would be curious about how you would do it
@SimonHutchinson

Interesting idea. Switches would be a good way to do that--so running the LFO to a bunch of places, then using switches to toggle the connection on/off. Generally, when I build in Reaktor, I make one-purpose instruments for a specific musical goal, so that kind of flexibility isn't usually something that I consider. That said, if you're making instruments to share with others (or sell), building in that flexibility is important. Good luck. Let me know how it goes!

Trying to figure out why that pitch drift is happening... Is Reaktor reading the delay value each time it processes an audio sample? And then that delay value gets updated at the rate determined by the control rate? So, as its processing the audio, each sample will be delayed by different amounts? So, the oscillator waveform may end its cycle early or late, depending on which samples get delayed by which amounts? Is that why the pitch drift is happening?

So I'm not really a DSP expert, so someone else might jump in here too, but I think of it like making a delay with a tape loop. If you want to speed up the delay, you speed up the loop, which raises the pitch of the material that's currently on the tape (since it has to play back faster). If you want to slow down the delay rate, the pitch of what's currently on the tape gets lower (until new things are recorded over it). By constantly adjusting the delay buffer a little bit with that LFO we get these subtle changes.
