Күн бұрын

I had a lot of requests for a video about flying the ILS in the MSFS 2020 A320 NEO. So here we go!
I am a real world Airbus pilot with thousands of hours flying the real aircraft and thought it would be fun to have a look at the new detailed simulation of the longest baby 'bus by Toliss. Hopefully you find this useful and it brings another perspective to your simulation. Any thoughts or comments are welcome!
This video is intended for home entertainment only and does not reflect or represent any real world aircraft or airline procedures. It is for home flight simulator enthusiasts only and has no real world application.

I'm going to have to watch this a couple more times I think. I pretty much stick to simple aircraft, but the occasional airliner would be good and whiule I can find "a way" with the auto-pilot for cruise purposes its not good - and ILS and the approach is something I really struggle to put together. This seems clear;y explained, its a case of getting all the steps and settings in place in my head.

So glad I discovered this channel - an actual pilot teaching us how to fly, not just average gamers having a vague crack at a vague tutorial without knowing why they're doing what they're doing. A very informative and enjoyable video! Just a request for the future, could the background sounds (i.e. simulator sounds) be a little higher in the future please? Thank you so much, keep up the great work!

Whats wrong with average gamers playing flight sim?
@harryhibberd8712
@harryhibberd8712 4 жыл бұрын
@@Itreallywasnt Nothing whatsoever! I probably wasn't as clear as I should've been - what I meant by that comment was it's nice to see an actual pilot, rated for this specific type of aircraft, giving tutorials on certain aspects of flying it. The 'average gamer' bit was referring to those who care very little and/or aren't very knowledgeable with regards to aviation who are suddenly "interested" in planes just because a pretty game has come out which happens to have planes in it. They'll just go and Google how to (for example) fly an ILS approach, missing out potentially important bits, then make a vague tutorial that spreads misinformation on how to fly the procedure. As you learn in flight school, types rating courses etc there's a right and a wrong way to do things. This channel teaches the right way, but 9 times out of 10 the 'average gamer' tutorial won't. Please don't take this as a rant against gamers suddenly being interested in a flight simulator; I'm so glad this sim has captured the interests and imagination of the wider gaming community. The point is that it's nice to hear the proper procedures explained by a real world, type rated pilot. Apologies for any confusion!

This video illustrates my problem with the FS franchise perfectly. I've been among the number of those who use FS off and on ever since FS3 and in the years the ILS landing has got ever so refined that up at the start of FS9's reign I had gotten so used in making a plane land itself (better if it was a payware or one of the rare freeware able of full autolanding, but I could get through disabling Otto at decision height) that I would carefully avoid any and every landing airports that hadn't this service. In three words: I got lazy. Lazy to the point I had forgot how to land a plane manually. Terrible condition even for a mere simulator pilot. So I did the sole intelligent thing I could. I threw away all the jetliners and started back from scratch. From props. And there I met my life-long passion. In FS9, which reign lasted VERY long because FSX was and remains a crock (first because it needed CPU way more powerful than the ones on the market to be used at an amount of frames per seconds that was not a slideshow, then when the powerful enough CPU arrived because used graphics that its 32bit architecture could not manage, saturating the 3Gb at best of RAM it could use and producing itself into spectacular back to desktop crashes especially when one were in final), a lot of very beautiful propliners with reasonably accurate flight systems were published, and the greatest majorities of them were free too. I re-learned to land heavy irons manually, but was smitten by the old glories and remained with the multi-prop planes, never bothering to return the the jet age. To this very day, when I fire either FS9 (yes, I still use that version) or X-plane 9 (much more rarely) and go for a "heavy", I only fly piston propliners. and this makes me feel peculiar thinking of FS2020. It's beautiful. At this very moment the best version of FS (if you disregard its lack of portability) but it hasn't any of the planes I favour. The place where I got most of my working ones (Calclassics) say they are compatible with some tinkering but... dunno. I will sooner or later make the jump to FS2020, that's for sure, bur I can't see myself doing it anytime soon. Note I wrote above that FS2020 has a lack of portability. What did I mean? Real scenario. When I go in vacation I bring with myself a laprtop with the "mobile version" of my FS9 installation, so when in the lazy afternoons, when its so hot that going out of a AC room (or the business cone of a fan) is not in discussion, if I feel like it I can fire the sim up and go for a flight to pass the time. Now, with FS9 it's no problem. FSX (I don't use it, but...) works too. X-plane? Sure. Another sim that it's not FS2020? Go for it. FS2020? With the average connection of the average hotel or vacation village not going above 4Mbit per second (or at least that is the actual fastest I've ever met) and barely able to let you use YT (NOT in hi-res)? I wanna see YOU trying.

@@udayrulz1 It isn't, but for setting up an approach from what I just said it is, the only part that can be tricky is figuring out your transition point if you wish to have one. The simulator still doesn't have the complete working of the MCDU. It'll be interesting to see if the developers do more because that'll help pilots enjoy it more. But at the same time it'll really complicate things for beginners. I still don't know if the flight control law protections have been put in and if the degradations with failure are there too. That'll be another interesting feature to add to the simulator.

great video, thanks! However I'm having issues with the ATC: in FSX the ATC told you when to descend and actually guided you throughout the approach... In FS2020 the ATC tells me to go to a certain hight (e.g. 14000ft) but it never tells me to descend in time, it kinda just "forgets" about me so I stay at my assigned altitude and end up just flying past the airport... when I descend manually it just tells me to get back to my assigned altitude again... so in the end I just "jump" to the final approach to do the landing, which isn't exactly how I want to play the game... is that a bug or am I missing something?

@@sneakprev1984 yeah ben ignoring it but the constant jammering about it is anoying over time. I also keep getting told to climb to 15000ft when i actualy am flying at 15000ft so either i'm messing things up or there is a bugg or somthing.
@Android811

@@zanster8336 That could be a "transition altitude" thing. Above "transition altitude" you should set your altimeter to standard pressure (29.92"). If you are still using the local pressure setting, your altitude could be significantly off of what ATC is expecting from you. Transition altitude in Australia is 10,000ft, but I believe it is 18,000ft in America.

This is an incredible tutorial! I will definitely have to re-watch it to fully understand, but this is definitely what I was looking for! I’ve been trying to fly the entire flight manually with the yoke, and have had too many crashes. Please keep up the great Microsoft Flight Simulator Tutorials! Maybe a full flight from start to finish, in a region of the world you’ve never flown!

Loved the video length. Your infusion of real-life knowledge adds so much to the learning experience. If some folks think these are too long you might add an index in the video notes. As an example, 3 min 30 sec Setting up autopilot; 4 min 15 sec Taxi Clearance; 5 min 00 sec Navigating Taxiways. Obviously, these are just random examples but hopefully, it gives you an idea of what I mean. That way if someone wants to skip things they already know or if someone wants to go back to a video to refresh on a certain section it would make it really convenient. Thanks once again for your work on these awesome vids.

It's great to able to watch a real A320 pilot flying the aircraft in msfs. I have learned so much more from watching this, than I have from watching some of the KZbinrs who are not real pilots. I made my first successful flight in an A320 yesterday, from EGGD Bristol, to LEGE Girona, but my approach into Girona did not go as planned, as I did not have the aircraft in the correct approach configuration, but I'm going to try it again using what I have learned from watching this video. Thank you for sharing this with us.

The best tutorial Ive seen on ILS landing with the Airbus, the others just made my head spin. Length is perfect and you take every step in a good paste. Only problem I have now is that with the new patch I cant manually choose the "nearest airport" and turn into ATIS for information, I only have the choice to cancel IFR and then choose nearest airport. I did not have this problem earlier what I can recall.

Use to be pretty big into flight simulation, flying the 737 from pmdg and aerosoft a320 in FSX, it's been 3 years since I've last really been flying ( sold my PC to fix my car) and now just getting back to it on the new XBox. I still have a concept on the procedures but you definitely helped me refresh everything and now I fully grasp it again. Thank you very much!

Very good detail. It is a very good thing that you describe what you would expect a button to do or the screen to show, not only because if a dev stubles upon this they'd be able to fix it, but also because when the planes *do* get updated, this video will still be relevant!

Have just stumbled onto your YT page and look what I've found, a real world pilot who knows what he's talking about re: the A320. I can already see that there is a wealth of information here, from which I will hopefully be able to learn how to fly this aircraft type. I've flown the Zibo 737 many times in XP11, but am now considering MSFS, which is where your lovely videos will come in very handy, thank you :-)

Thanks Paul, you are very welcome! I hope they help you to enjoy the bus. For now the A320 in MSFS is lacking in some areas, but mods and hopefully official updates are gradually improving this. So don’t be surprised if some videos on my channel using X Plane don’t make sense just yet in MSFS!

Excellent video! I found it very helpful. It would be great if you could do a full flight tutorial showing everything from initial selection in the world map, all the way to through to landing and shut-down. I'm not ready to do all that myself, but it would be fun to have a follow-along type video along those lines. Thank you very much.

This is absolutely wonderful, thank you - I used it as a guide for my very first IFR flight. I ran almost the same route but chose 09L to land at to avoid that weird kink before the approach. I had to go around a few times as the auto altitude seemed to put me too high too close to the approach, and then I struggled to understand how crucial the timing of switching on LOC then approach mode are. Once I captured that glide slope for the first time after over an hour in the air it was an amazing feeling!

Hi Joe, very addictive this sim isnt it ? That yearning to be able to fly like a professional pilot or as near as is possible. I have to be honest, I've watched a few of these tutorials and find it a little bit baffling, so much information you need to be aware of and when to do certain inputs. Then again, I'm sure pilot training in real life isn't just a few hours lol !! I'm inpatient and want to be an expert like, NOW !! hehe....cheers, Daz

Brand new to 320 Sim Pilot, having only watched one video so far, but I absolutely love what I've seen so far. I'm a massive fan of 'sim' anything in games. My biggest criticism with this industry is that every game that replicates a realistic look doesn't come with a 'sim' level of difficulty/level of immersion. Typically gamers tend to shoot down such thoughts, but as I always stress, I've nothing against simplifying the processes or control, whatever in a game, but I consider it a missed opportunity to not cater to a larger audience, for those who are willing to accept a higher level of dedication, concentration or practice. And strangely, by going too 'arcade' in games actually makes them less rewarding, and sometimes unnecessarily harder when the virtual vehicle, item, whatever doesn't work and react as it would in real life. From what I've seen so far though, Mr Sim Pilot in many respects reminds me of one of the best online gaming friends I had years ago. The genre and game were very different, in that it was a first person shooter, and if memory serves me correctly was either originally commissioned to be a simulator of sorts for the military, or was produced by someone who was once involved in such a thing. I can't remember now, but irrespective, the gamer friend in question was met during a play through, coop with one of the most proficient FPS gamers I've had the pleasure of gaming with. The guy joined our game and was impressed with our communication; and explained his background in the military. He had a calm, professional attitude, exuding the personality qualities Mr Sim Pilot has, and through real experiences raises the quality of the simulation of the game to another level. Although there's clearly always a limit to the level of simulation in a videogame, learning from experienced professionals about those limitations, and watching and understanding how their skills translate to the virtual environment is an incredibly valuable and, for me, extremely enjoyable experience. In the same way a professional sportsperson still requires a coach or a genuine professional in any trade remains a sponge to learn and soak up tips, tricks, new skills or forever looks to improve their current skill set, I think gamers can only benefit from observing and learning from people whose jobs, or the equipment or skills they employ in real life are translated to the virtual environments of videogames.

Came down perfectly to 6000ft... got clearance for landing... didn't understand ILS. Next thing I know the autopilot has me at 420kts spinning in circles at 6000ft 🤣
