Yes! I agree about the thrift store and those stickers! I get so mad when they do that! Also, when they use packing tape to keep items together in sets! WD-40 is great for getting adhesive off. Our local goodwill's use a wax pencil to write their prices on. WD-40 works for that too! I have an estate sale company, and I make sure to use easily removable labels or hang tags on delicate items. My best thrift store find so far was an Oika Toikka bird that I purchased for $3. This last week I bought 2 Selkirk Glass Paperweights for 25 cents each!

Dr. Lori, I’m a porcelain artist.The paint is fired into the glaze. I always put price tags on my painted items. If any residue Is left, rubbing alcohol removes it. No problem. Just my experience.

The segment on the blown glass marbles, Dredin coffee pot, mid century painting and estate sale found jewelry was one of the best shows of yours that i have ever watched. Your information on each piece was added to my brain cell files. You made me smile when "rabbit skin glue" was mentioned as one of your identifiers. At the School of the Boston Museum, all of my canvases were sized w rabbit skin glue and primed with lead white on my portrait finish linen canvas. (I stocked up on lead white when we learned that it was going to be banned. As an aside, you appeared less rushed than in videos with live audiences/set time segments. Wonderful to listen to and absorb.

You hit the nail on the head with thrift stores price labeling. There are some I won't go to anymore because they basically damage the objects with the stickers. Some use crayons or grease pencils on fabric or other objects where it won't come off without damaging the item. - very frustrating :(

I bought a bag of jewelry from a thrift store for less than 20 bucks. In it were many good pieces of costume jewelry and a tarnished wristband...the wristband turned out to be a sterling silver piece currently retailing at Tiffany &Co for almost $900. It was easy to bring it back to its pure white shiny silver.

For some reason I've always been able to sniff out precious metals but not necessarily gemstones since the man made ones are almost nicer. The story you just told about the $300 purchase of over $10,000.00 worth of jewelry is incredible. I don't think I've ever made quite that large of a find but pretty close. Just a tip for getting sticky stuff off of items safely. Extra virgin olive oil on your fingertip and rub gently. Always works for me!

Use a blow dryer to apply heat and a sticker will usually come right off.

Dr. Lori - I use Avon's Original Skin-so-Soft bath oil to remove adhesive from the stuff I buy. It gets all the sticky stuff off without damaging the piece. (for non-porous surfaces). Works like a charm!

In regards to the issue of price sticker placement; I have thrifted for many years and have noticed an increasing number of price stickers on items. My guess is that if a sticker falls off there will always be another one on the item to state the price. The significant damage multiple stickers can cause will devalue the item even more. Not much that consumers can do to change that practice. So unfortunate. Thanks for the great information you provide. I have been watching your videos daily during SIP trying to learn how to better spot that thrift store gem when markets open back up.

I use to pick during Oklahoma city's big garbage day in alternating neighborhoods in the early 2000s...I had always hoped I would find something valuable ,as a poor single parent...on the news I hear that someone fished an old book out of the garbage around that same time that was worth $250k...it was some kind of native American book.

Taking the goodwill stickers off without damaging item - slightly wet the top of the sticker, make sure it is saturated. In most cases the sticker will come right off without sticky residue.

Goodwill put a price sticker on a beautiful Vintage Bausch & Lomb promo placard ( took off the paint ). The placard was worth $399.00, but not with it destroyed. The manager kept rubbing her hand over the piece as well, and I was livid.
