That Calvary movie... Ugh difficult. You need to do another one of these. Grand Torino is another one. I hate it in movies and TV the priests are usually so flippent and cliché. It really doesn't do it justice.

Good question! I have never seen it done, but I would not be surprised if it has happened before! It reminds me of the old story of the seminarian asking the priest if it was okay to smoke while praying. The priests responded, "absolutely not! That's not reverent!" Then another seminarian asks the same priest if he could PRAY while SMOKING. And the priest said, "I think that's an excellent idea! A great way to use that time!"

Missed this the first time around. The Hitchcock movie "I Confess" is all about the seal of the confessional and how a priest cannot (and, in this case does not) break the seal, even at his own peril. (Spoiler alert: in the movie the priest is set up to take the fall for a murder.) If you take GrantNMolly up on their suggestion (in an earlier comment), maybe you could include "I Confess" in the mix.

Why does the priest who listens to the sinner’s sins during confessional ask for a donation in exchange for expiation? Why does the priest sometimes ask for double the donation in exchange for the sinner being able to have a future sin forgiven or expiated? Just last week there was a story in Utah of a 26 year old admitting to murdering an elderly couple and stealing their credit cards during a confessional. The Priest during confessional asked for a $1,000 donation by credit card in exchange for forgiving the sin of murder & theft. Isn’t this an abuse of a confessional? During the confessional the priest asked for an additional $1,000 just in case the sinner wanted to repeat the crime with a second victim. 54 666

The Catholic Church does not allow priests to charge money to forgive sins. It is clearly forbidden and punishable according to Canon Law (canon 1380). If the story you shared is true in all those details, then it was certainly an abuse of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and a serious sin by the priest.

GOD forgives sin through repentance of sins and acceptance of Jesus as the propitiation for sin. There is no need for any other priest. The Ten Commandments plainly set forth those things which are unforgivable.

Of course sins are forgiven through repentance and acceptance of Jesus. But Jesus himself made it not so simple when he gave humans the ability to forgive the sins of others - "If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven" John 20:23. This is why the Catholic Church has had the practice of confessing sins since the very early centuries.
